The Queen’s sister Princess Margaret became enamoured with Saturday Night Fever icon John Travolta and asked him over for afternoon tea, despite John having no idea who she was
Princess Margaret had the hots for actor John Travolta who gasped “she hit on me!” after the royal requested to meet him.
The Queen’s sister became enamoured by the Grease star after seeing him swivel his hips in Saturday Night Fever.
Top Hollywood exec Barry Diller has lifted the lid on the movie industry in his new autobiography.
He said: “Travolta became a superstar within a week of the release. When Princess Margaret came to visit LA, I was seated next to her at a dinner.
“With nothing much else to say, I asked her whom she’d like to meet.
“She said, ‘I want to meet John Travolta. Ask him to tea.’”
But Diller, 83, revealed in his memoir Who Knew that Travolta, 71, wasn’t keen on the invite.
He continued: “So I called up Travolta. He didn’t know who Princess Margaret was.
“I explained she was the sister of the queen of England, and John said, ‘Sure, have her come over.’
“I said, ‘No, no, no, she’s at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, and you have to go to her and have tea.’
“He said, ‘I’m not going to her. I don’t do tea!’ Finally I said, ‘John, just go.’
“So Travolta went to the Beverly Wilshire, and when he came back, he said, ‘She hit on me!’”
Diller admitted he was surprised by the success of Saturday Night Fever, which launched Travolta as a star.
He said that studio bosses were initially unsure of the actor, who went on to make hit flicks like Look Who’s Talking and Pulp Fiction.
Diller added: “But two weeks later we opened the movie, and there were vast lines around the block at every theatre across America – a television star had broken into the movies.
“We were on our way.
“It was a shock surprise to the industry, this solid hit from nowhere, but it was emblematic of how we were changing how movies got made.”
