Adolescence star Owen Cooper slammed US sweets as “just terrible” during his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

The 15 year old actor slated the treats, even bringing a basket of them to the show to make his point. Owen declared: “One thing I hate about America – the chocolate and the sweets, everything is just terrible. It’s just Cheetos and all that nonsense. Honestly, I hate it.”

Jimmy Fallon had quizzed the young actor about his dislikes in the States, given Owen’s time spent there while promoting the Netflix drama, which might be getting a second series. Following his candid remarks, Owen showcased his preferred British sweets, including Maltesers, to the host.

During the interview, Owen also joked that he was expecting the buildings in New York to be taller and he later dished out another juicy titbit – revealing that mega-star Leonardo DiCaprio lauded his acting skills.

Despite his strong preference for UK brands, the teen from Warrington acknowledged the vast market for iconic American confectionery, projected to hit $83.54 billion (£60 billion) by 2024.

The history of US sweets dates back to the late 19th century with handcrafted batches sold in local shops, leading up to the Hershey Chocolate Company’s introduction of the first mass-produced milk chocolate bar in 1894. Post-World War II saw an influx of confectionery imports into the UK and beyond.

But it’s not just Owen who’s talking about the joys of British confectionery, his fans are too, taking to social media to hail Maltesers, Minstrels and beef Minichips as the pinnacle of cinema munch.

One enthusiast remarked: “Maltesers, Minstrels and beef Minichips are the perfect cinema snacks. Heaven. Can’t get anything remotely close in the US.”

Even an American chimed in with agreement, noting: “He’s absolutely correct. The candy, chips etc over here are atrocious. Garbage compared to Europe’s.”

A third piped up confirming: “He is spot on actually.”
