David Beckham is set to be knighted in the upcoming King’s Birthday Honours list, with his wife Victoria becoming Lady Beckham.

The footie legend and former Manchester United star is finally set to become a Sir after years of public clamour for him to be honoured. Beckham has been a national treasure for years and was always on the cards to join the ranks of football’s knights. Calls for him to be knighted were highest after he stood in the queue for hours to see Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin.

The footie legend had been waiting for his knighthood, especially after his OBE in 2003 didn’t lead to the coveted title.

However, leaked emails from 2017 caused a stir as he was rumoured to have said he “didn’t care about being knighted” – although the former midfield maestro insists some of those leaked messages were tampered with.

The controversial emails allegedly had Beckham venting: “I expected nothing less. It’s a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of got something like this 10 years ago.”

A source close to Beckham told to The Mirror back in 2017: “To be honest, he does feel that he has given so much to his country. And sometimes you say things in private that anyone would say and you don’t really mean it. While he was frustrated in those emails, he was over it the moment he sent them. Getting the knighthood is not what his work is about. He doesn’t care if he gets a knighthood or not.”

Becks, capped 115 times by England, has kept up his charitable work and even struck up a friendship with King Charles. The king himself seemed to drop a massive hint last month when Becks met him and Queen Camilla at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Charles asked him: “You got it, didn’t you?” To which David responded: “It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind.”

Last year, Beckham’s appointment as an ambassador to Her Majesty’s charity, the King’s Foundation, looked like a promising nod. However, his tax dealings had previously been eyed as a hurdle to snagging the ‘Sir’ title, until they were sorted out.

At the time, Beckham expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m excited to be working with The King’s Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity’s work.

“I’ve always been keen to help young people to expand their horizons and I’m particularly looking forward to supporting the Foundation’s education programmes and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature.”

He added: “Having developed a love for the countryside I’m also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the Foundation’s work. It was inspiring to hear from The King about the work of His Majesty’s Foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips.”

Beckham is set to join an illustrious roster of sporting knights, including Manchester legends Sir Alex Ferguson and the late Sir Bobby Charlton.

Beckham, who celebrated his 50th birthday earlier in May, made his mark at Old Trafford, climbing the ladder to become the captain of England. His iconic free-kick that clinched England’s spot in the 2002 World Cup is still one of his standout moments.

He also had stints at Real Madrid, AC Milan, and LA Galaxy before hanging up his boots. Becks is still a firm favourite with the British public, and his recent respectful queue to honour Queen Elizabeth only boosted his popularity.
