The 10cc musician had never watched a game despite his 1978 hit Dreadlock Holiday becoming one of the sport’s anthems – Phil Tuffnell told Graham that the song was the “soundtrack to my cricket career”
Singer Graham Gouldman has proclaimed he is finally bat-and-ball bonkers after seeing his first cricket match – 47 years after singing the famous line ‘I don’t like cricket – I love it’.
The 10cc musician had never watched a game despite his 1978 hit Dreadlock Holiday becoming one of the sport’s anthems.
And judging by his words after witnessing England beat the West Indies at The Oval on Tuesday, there could even be a lyric change or new tune in the pipeline.
The 79-year-old announced: “After today’s experience I can say ‘I don’t like cricket, I absolutely love it’.
“When you have had a nice experience like this I’m sure somewhere, at some point, something will crop up in a song.”
BBC Three Counties radio took Graham to the one-day international after he shockingly revealed that he’d never seen a game during an interview in 2019.
Presenter Justin Dealey said they had been trying to make it happen since then but Covid and other obstacles got in the way.
He added: “It was good to finally get it over the line.”
Dreadlock Holiday zoomed to Number 1 in the UK and several other countries around the world while 10cc had five UK top 10 albums on the trot.
The much-loved reggae hit, which is arguably their best known, was inspired by a fan Graham met in Jamaica.
He asked the fella “do you like cricket?”, and he replied “oh no… I love it!”.
Former England cricketer Phil Tuffnell told Graham that the song was the “soundtrack to my cricket career”.
He added: “Wherever we was touring, it was always on.”
