BBC Radio Scotland broadcaster Bryan Burnett, who presents the early evening Get it On show, told listeners he is undergoing treatment for the cancer and is expected to recover
A BBC Radio broadcaster has announced he’s been diagnosed with cancer.
Bryan Burnett, who presents the early evening Get it On show, told listeners that he’ll be taking a break from the programme while he undergoes treatment for the “incredibly rare” cancer. He was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer after having his appendix removed earlier this year.
A number of BBC stars have opened up about their health issues in recent months. Back in February, BBC Radio star Janice Forsyth revealed her early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and back in January, BBC star Giles Coren shared his prostate cancer diagnosis.
Bryan, 59, reassured listeners on Thursday evening (June 5) that the “incredibly rare” cancer is treatable and he’s expected to make a full recovery after his treatment. The treatment he’s getting involves chemotherapy and complex abdominal surgery.
It turns out his surgeon is a listener of his show, which airs on BBC Radio Scotland from 6pm on weekdays. He said: “I’ve experienced the most incredible care and kindness from the NHS staff who have been looking after me. My surgeon is a Get it On listener so I know I’m in good hands.
“I will really miss the music and the chat when I’m off but our listeners have given me hundreds of great playlists so that will keep me going over the next few months.”
He went on: “I want to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all my brilliant producers for all the hand holding and all the encouragement they’ve given me since they found out my news. I’m sure they’ll let you know how I’m doing over the next few weeks.”
Hayley Valentine, director of BBC Scotland said: “Bryan is one of our most popular broadcasters on Radio Scotland and I know listeners will join us in wishing him well as he embarks on his treatment.
“We look forward to welcoming him back to the Get it On studio once he’s recovered.” Presenter Grant Scott will fill in on the programme while Burnett is absent.
Before joining Get it On, Bryan presented Brand New Country, a country music show on BBC Radio Scotland. He hosted the show for 15 years and won International Broadcaster of the Year at the 2005 Country Music Association awards in Nashville.
He has also enjoyed stints on Radio Clyde and Northsound and presented numerous programmes on Scottish Television, including game shows Passport Quiz and Red Amber Green. He also hosted the holiday show Scottish Passport.
Bryan, a keen runner, keeps listeners updated on his travels with regular snaps on his Instagram feed. In March, he revealed he was prepping for the Inverness Half Marathon.
He wrote:” A lot of prep to get done for tomorrow’s @invernesshalfmarathon and @scottishathletics 1/2 Mar champs but I keep getting distracted by the views on this lovely journey to Inverness.”
Last month, he worked on the great Bristol Run. He said at the time: “Working on #greatbristolrun is a great opportunity to have a wander around a favourite city. Love Bristol. Walked the bookshop trail, visited a cathedral, saw a Banksy and drank a lot of hipster coffee.”
