Gemma Collins has given an update on her health after revealing she has been battling a serious illness for the past three weeks, which has left her struggling to breathe
Gemma Collins has opened up about her harrowing battle with pneumonia, confessing she feels like she’s “dying” as the fight drags into its fourth week. The ex-TOWIE icon, aged 44, was hit with the severe lung infection almost a month ago and has been gasping for air ever since.
On Wednesday, a bed-bound Gemma took to Instagram to give her followers a health update, admitting she’s been seriously ill for weeks. Alongside a snap of herself in bed, she penned: “Hey guys sorry been quiet I have Pneumonia. I’m not as fast or on it as I usually am on the daily. I am still honouring my work commitments which is taking every bit of energy I have but will be back entertaining you all soon.”
At that time, Gemma also posted another update on her Instagram Story, showing she was hooked up to a drip and had been visited by a medic. The beloved telly celeb is battling pneumonia, an inflammation of the tissue in one or both lungs, usually due to an infection.
While most sufferers bounce back in two to four weeks, those at the extremes of age or with existing heart or lung problems may face a tougher fight and need hospital care.
Gemma has luckily avoided a hospital stay, but she confessed to the Mirror that she feels like “she’s dying” due to her viral pneumonia. “Because the Pneumonia is viral, no antibiotic is going to help me. I’ve been really short of breath and obviously I have work commitments that I would never not turn up to. I’m old-school, I would always fulfil my work commitments.
“It’s shocking, I’ve had it now for over three weeks and I had steroids given to me by my doctor. It was DJ Fat Tony’s wedding and I had to take them to get through that, but I’m off them now and the sickness is really kicking back in. It’s so frustrating because I normally have so much energy and I’m always loving life, but now I get really breathless really quickly and I feel like I’m dying.”
The good news is that Gemma’s doctor thinks she’s past the worst, as the GC herself shared that she’s getting final chest scans this weekend. “The doctor is coming to my house and I’m praying that I’ll be on the mend soon,” she added.
Despite her severe health woes over the last month, Gemma has endeavoured to slow down and rest, although she admits it’s against her nature to do so. “I’ve got one more job to do this weekend and then I have two weeks off, so I’m praying in that time I will properly recover. But I can’t take it easy. I’m just one of those people who has to always be doing something and I feel so guilty when I’m forced to stop working.”
Gemma’s health scare earlier this week had fans and celeb mates flooding her comments with well-wishes. “You giving us all so much energy and good vibes! Get your rest! Wouldn’t want anything to happen to you,” penned X Factor icons Jedward to their mate.
