BBC presenter and new Match of the Day host Gabby Logan thinks this summer’s women’s European Championships has the potential to create many new heroes from the Lionesses squad, just like 2022 did
Gabby Logan has vowed the women’s Euros will make “so many more” heroes from the Lionesses again.
The telly host, 52, reckons next month’s tournament will have the same buzz as 2022 when England triumphed.
She said this year’s side “really deserve wider recognition” as it boasts “amazing female talent”.
The broadcaster, who is presenting the tournament in Switzerland for the BBC, added: “Think back to the women’s Euros in 2022.
“Lots of people didn’t know who Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly, Ella Toone or Ellen White were and it was such a joy to see them emerge as household names.
“Heroes, basically. And there are so many more to come.”
Names being tipped for stardom include Chelsea player Aggie Beever-Jones, 21.
Logan said: “A lot of these women are already very well known within sporting circles, but they really deserve wider recognition. And that means both women and men watching.
“With football particularly, I think sometimes the narrative can be: ‘No men’s Euros or World Cup this summer — it’s going to be a quiet one.’ “It’s really not. Across all these sports, there is amazing female talent waiting to be discovered.”
More than 17 million people tuned in to watch England’s win over Germany in the Euro 2022 final, making it the most-watched women’s football game in UK history.
Meanwhile, she was coy when quizzed about her salary to present Match of the Day next season compared to what Gary Lineker was earning.
The broadcaster, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates will host the flagship show after Gary – who was the highest-paid BBC presenter on £1.35m a year – left the Beeb last month.
When asked if she demanded equal pay, Logan said: “That’s all sorted.”
