Glastonbury Patchwork secret act finally confirmed as iconic band hit stage

Britpop legends Pulp have taken to stage at Glastonbury to huge cheers as they were revealed to be the festival’s secret ‘Patchwork’ set.

The Sheffield band previously headlined Glastonbury in 1995 at the last minute after The Stone Roses pulled out.

Frontman Jarvis Cocker — who performed a surprise DJ set on Friday at the festival — told fans the 1995 set “was the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life” after taking to the stage on Saturday.

After opening with classic hits Sorted For E’s & Wizz and Disco 2000, he said to fans: “Hi, my name is Jarvis, hello. This is Pulp. Sorry to the people who were expecting Patchwork. Did you know it was us?”

When the crowd replied in unison “yes”, he joked: “How?” Before telling them the first two songs were first played when Pulp headlined the Pyramid Stage in 1995. He added: “You could say those songs were born at Glastonbury.”

The secret set for Saturday’s surprise slot had long been teased by organisers and suspense was drawn out when a group of people in plastic raincoats appeared on the Pyramid Stage to the sound of pre-recorded applause.

After a few moments, the opening bars of the band’s classic tune about festivalgoers opened before the bespectacled singer appeared on stage to rapturous applause.

The entire line-up for this summer’s bash had been set in stone for months, with headliners like The 1975, Neil Young, and Olivia Rodrigo confirmed. But bosses listed a mystery act known only as “Patchwork” from 6pm to 7pm on Saturday.

Delighted fans cheered and danced to the 90s classic as Pulp tore through a set of their greatest hits, some 30 years after their headline performance. Addressing them, Cocker said: “I feel incredibly relaxed, do you feel relaxed? Even you with the giant tennis racket there?”

He then mimed a forehand before the band launched into a real oldie, 1992’s O.U. (Gone, Gone). Cocker split the audience in two with one shouting O and the other shouting U.

He then said he’s going to visit the audience for Acrylic Afternoons before lobbing a load of teabags into the front rows, telling fans: “Share ‘em.”

He then told fans about his “first time at Glastonbury”, before the band cracked into classic track “Do you remember the first time?”

And fans watching at home were delighted too, with one social media user saying: “Pulp have outclassed anything else seen as Glastonbury this weekend within 5 minutes. 1975 fans – that’s a proper headline band for you.”
