TV star Johnny Vegas is about to surprise viewers with his artistic side as he explores the man behind the brash telly persona that comedy fans know and love
Johnny Vegas is showing fans the man behind the persona in his new TV show.
Born Michael Pennington, he adopted the stage name in the early days of his stand-up career, but in Quest’s Johnny Vegas’s Little Shop of Antiques, he’s indulging a more artistic side away from comedy.
The show sees Johnny turn a lifelong passion for collecting bric-a-brac into a business by opening a pop-up shop.
The comic told Radio Times: “I’ll always be trading under the name of Johnny Vegas, but I’m doing less comedy now, so Johnny is getting squeezed out as Michael comes into play.
“I love being Johnny, but it’s nice to take people by surprise and show my artistic, creative side.”
Johnny hasn’t completely ruled out a return to stand-up but says it’s not a priority, with his last tour taking place three years ago.
He said: “Has Johnny had his time? I don’t know. I’d have to wake up and really want to do it, because if I planned it, I’d be anxious about it. You only ever want to do stand-up when your heart is completely in it.”
In the latest issue of Radio Times, Johnny also discusses his experience with ADHD, after being diagnosed in 2023.
He is set to explore his ADHD journey in an upcoming Channel 4 documentary, with the comedian saying: “Personally, it made sense of a lot of things.
“There are behavioural traits I now understand around timekeeping, tidiness, hitting deadlines, not getting overwhelmed at the start of the day and being motivated in the direction you need to be.”
