Stream Forever, Oasis finally go digital

One of the main reasons Oasis reunited was to become more releavent in digital age. Despite selling millions of albums Liam and Noel Gallagher’s music was never streamed much, but that has finally changed thanks to the tour.

FORGET the dosh, divorce or their mum Peggy, the real reason Oasis got back together is streaming.

Many still wonder why Noel Gallagher agreed to sign on the dotted after all the trolling and years of refusal.

Despite a costly divorce he doesn’t need the money, but he was well aware that Oasis weren’t relevant in the digital age.

Only three Oasis tracks had significant streaming figures before last summer and the popularity of their back catalogue on Spotify and Apple Music paled into insignificance next acts like Coldplay or even Imagine Dragons.

Their label Big Brother’s head of creative & retail marketing Sarah Mansfield revealed the reunion did the trick: “Streams went up 750% in the hour following the tour announcement and there were over 11 million Oasis streams on the day the tickets went on sale.”

A new generation is investing in the band’s music digitally but vinyl remains popular too and who knows, a new live album could be on the way post tour? “The uplift we’ve seen since the tour announcement has been staggering, vinyl particularly; it’s mad how much it sells,” Mansfield told Music Week. “It’s also really important to Noel and Liam…they still view the album as a physical product.”

So it’s mission accomplished before they’ve even stepped on stage but ultimately Oasis also want to be part of the conversation again, and to perhaps feel vital again.

Noel suggested as much not long ago: “Look at bands like U2 and The Rolling Stones. They’ve been around forever. People always ask, ‘Why do they do it? They don’t need the f*king money!’ They do it because they love doing it. A song that wasn’t written yesterday will be written today – and one day it’ll be sung by some f**ker somewhere and thousands of people in a stadium will sing along. That, in itself, is a really special thing.”
