Netflix boss Bela Bajaria has said she has “no regrets” about axing The Residence after the comedy was nominated for a number of Emmy Awards, including Best Comedy Series
Netflix’s chief Bela Bajaria stands by her decision to cancel The Residence, despite the show’s recent Emmy nominations.
The murder mystery comedy, starring Uzo Aduba as police consultant Cordelia Cupp, was scrapped earlier this year, only to receive multiple nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards.
When asked if she had any regrets about axing the show, Bela told The Hollywood Reporter: “No, because I always knew she’d be recognised.”
Uzo Aduba was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, while the show’s first episode, The Fall of the House of Usher, is up for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode and Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More).
Bela insisted that she “loves” The Residence and has no second thoughts about the timing of the cancellation announcement, which came just two weeks before the Emmy nominations.
She said: “No, I don’t really look at when the news or not the news… I think what’s great is – we love The Residence. We championed it, we made it.
“Uzo [Aduba] has been part of the Netflix family for a long time and has been recognized before for awards. So, she gave an incredible performance.
“Not surprised at all by her nom. We thought that she would and should absolutely get it. So, to me, that’s great, that work. That work was completed and people loved it, and she was amazing and then gets recognised for it.”
She asserted that the spotlight is more on how “great” both the programme and Uzo were.
Bela also suggested that Netflix will throw its weight behind cancelled shows during awards season just as much as those still airing.
She further stated: “We’re gonna support- yeah! I mean for her and the show, like, we did – of course. “Here’s the thing: I think what people forget is, like I said before, we developed it, we championed it, we really marketed – we did all of the things.
“And they’re all people involved who we work with and continue to work with and will continue to – so we’re always going to support that, for sure.”
