The music world is in mourning as the Osbourne family announced the death of rock icon Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away at 76. The Black Sabbath frontman’s family, including his wife Sharon, to whom he was married for more than 40 years, were by his side in his final moments on Tuesday morning.

This heartbreaking news comes shortly after Ozzy’s last live performance at Villa Park, the home ground of Aston Villa, during his Back to the Beginning show.

The family released a poignant statement: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.”

They continued, requesting privacy during this difficult time: “We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”

The announcement of his passing included a location stamp, “Birmingham, England July 22, 2025”, indicating that Ozzy had returned to his roots one final time, reports the Mirror.

Prior to his declining health, Ozzy and Sharon had expressed their desire to move back to the UK from Los Angeles, with Ozzy sharing his eagerness to return home. Although they had planned to make the move earlier, Ozzy’s ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease and multiple surgeries had postponed their plans.

“It’s time for me to spend some time with my grandkids,” he revealed to the Guardian in May as he geared up for his swansong performance. “I don’t want to die in a hotel room somewhere. I want to spend the rest of my life with my family.”

The rock legend and his wife Sharon were expected to make their Buckinghamshire residence their permanent home following the farewell gig.

Ozzy has been vocal about his longing to return to Britain, expressing his intentions as early as August 2022 after more than 20 years in Los Angeles, where he lambasted: “Everything’s f****** ridiculous (in America).”

He also pointed to the rampant gun violence in the States as a further incentive to relocate. “I’m fed up with people getting killed every day,” he lamented to The Observer.

“God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings. And there was that mass shooting in Vegas at that concert… it’s f****** crazy.”

Yet, Ozzy’s deteriorating health had put a spanner in the works, postponing the move for years.

In a chat with Planet Rock’s Loz Guest about Black Sabbath’s star-studded Back to the Beginning concert on July 5, Sharon confirmed that the event had paved the way for Ozzy’s return.

She disclosed: “He’s coming over in March. His brothers (in Black Sabbath), he’s excited to be here with them.”

When quizzed on whether they are indeed resettling in the UK for good, Sharon affirmed: “Yeah, we are.”

Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy left education at 15 and took on various jobs including factory labour before joining forces with school mate Geezer Butler in multiple bands.

The duo subsequently connected with Black Sabbath’s other founding figures, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, to establish what was initially dubbed Earth Blues Company – later abbreviated to Earth – in 1968.

Originally a Mod with a passion for soul music, as detailed in his biography on the group’s official website, Osbourne developed his more sinister persona after penning lyrics for a track called Black Sabbath, inspired by the 1963 Boris Karloff film bearing the same title.

Back in 2022, Ozzy proclaimed “Birmingham forever”, whilst making a surprise appearance at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in his hometown. The Black Sabbath legend was amongst numerous Brummie performers to take the stage, including Dexy’s Midnight Runners, UB40, and Musical Youth.
