Ozzy Osbourne, who has died aged 76, once tried to strange wife Sharon while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and the attack landed the rock titan in prison
Ozzy Osbourne once tried to kill his wife Sharon.
The Prince of Darkness sadly died on Tuesday (July 22) at the age of 76, just weeks after his final show with Black Sabbath at Villa Park in Birmingham. His wife Sharon Osbourne and children announced his passing in a heartbreaking joint statement.
Ozzy and Sharon tied the knot in 1982 and shared their three kids, Jack, Kelly and Aimee. They would eventually live happily ever after, but it’s safe to say their marriage of 43 years was a rocky one.
They briefly separated in 2016 when she found out about his rumoured affair with hairstylist Michelle Pugh. But the most horrifying chapter of their marriage came one night in 1989 when Ozzy tried to strangle Sharon to death while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Sharon said that she had just put their three kids to bed when a heavily intoxicated Ozzy walked into the room. His chilling words to her were: “We’ve come to a decision that you’ve got to die.”
In the A&E doc, The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne, she said: “He turned to me and said, ‘We’ve come to a decision that you’ve got to die,” and then he lunged at me.” She pushed a panic button as he throttled her, prompting the police to arrive.
Ozzy woke up in jail with no recollection of the near-fatal attack, which took place when the family were living in Buckinghamshire. Ozzy asked a police officer: “Why am I here?”.
He was told by the cop: “John Michael Osbourne, you have been arrested for the attempted murder of Sharon Osbourne.” Sharon said the thought of her children gave her the strength to survive until the police came.
According to The Sun on Sunday, Sharon said: “I had no idea who was sat across from me on the sofa but it wasn’t my husband. He goes to a stage where he gets that look in his eyes, the shutters were down and I just couldn’t get through to him. He was calm – very calm – then suddenly he lunged across at me and just dived on me and started to choke me.
“He got me down on the ground on top of me and I was feeling for stuff on the table. I felt the panic button and I just pressed it and the next thing I know, the cops were there.” Ozzy would later spend six months in rehab.
He said of the incident: “It’s not exactly one of my greatest achievements. All I remember is waking up in Amersham jail and I asked the cop, ‘Why am I here?’ And he says, ‘You want me to read your charge?’ So he read, ‘John Michael Osbourne, you have been arrested for attempted murder’.”
Announcing Ozzy’s death, Sharon and the family said in their statement: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.”
