Cat Deeley said she found moving back to UK ‘really hard’ before Patrick Kielty split

Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty have announced that they have split after 17 years together, and it’s been claimed that the couple spent much of their relationship living apart

TV host Cat Deeley confessed that relocating back to the UK with her husband Patrick Kielty and their two youngsters proved “really hard”.

The former couple, who announced their split this week, had lived in America for years. Cat, 48, and Patrick, 54, moved from Los Angeles to London in 2020, having spent more than a decade living overseas.

The This Morning host subsequently hinted that she would return to America each summer for her presenting duties on So You Think You Can Dance. The ex-couple, who wed in 2012, were reported to have made the choice partly due to worries about gun violence, reports the Mirror.

Cat, who assumed hosting duties on This Morning following her UK return, has also mentioned that additional reasons included wanting to be nearer to relatives and friends.

In an interview with the Sunday Times last year, Cat remembered their relocation following an episode where Patrick and one of their children were told to seek shelter at a retail centre. The publication reported there were whispers of a gunman in the vicinity, though it transpired to involve a suspicious package.

Cat revealed in the chat that she found the ordeal “really scary”.

It was additionally noted at the time that she found their eventual return to Britain, with its absence of sunshine, “really hard”.

Cat nevertheless told the publication that the Los Angeles she visits nowadays differs from the city she originally knew. She remarked: “It doesn’t feel as safe as it used to be. There’s an edge, which wasn’t there before. The health system is failing miserably.”

Cat also highlighted the post-pandemic situation, noting that there are “lots of vulnerable people” with “severe mental health issues” who have unfortunately slipped “through the net”.

During her appearance on ITV’s Lorraine in 2020, Cat revealed that a frightening incident at a mall was the “catalyst” for their decision to move back to the UK. Nonetheless, she disclosed that the couple had “always” intended to return to be nearer to their relatives for the benefit of their children eventually.

She explained: “Our boys they’ve got grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins that they adore, and they adore them right back. For us, it was like, it’s such a special moment in time and you don’t get those times back again. So we had always thought we would bring them back here so they could know everybody in the family and friends.”

Recent rumours suggest that Cat and Patrick may have been leading separate lives for some time following their relocation. Speculation abounds that their periods of separation, due to work commitments such as Patrick’s job in Ireland, might have played a role in their split, which was confirmed today.

The ex-couple announced their separation through a joint statement released to the PA news agency. Cat and the Late Late Show presenter Patrick clarified that “no other party involved” and affirmed their commitment to co-parenting their children following the end of their marriage.

They revealed in the statement: “We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.”

Cat and Patrick first crossed paths whilst presenting the BBC’s Fame Academy in 2002. The pair are understood to have been mates before their friendship blossomed into romance, tying the knot in 2012 after making their relationship public the year before.
