Channel 4 has announced that comedy duo David Mitchell and Robert Webb are set to return to screens later this year with a brand new sketch show, some fans are disappointed by their new project
Peep Show legends David Mitchell and Robert Webb have returned to comedy – but some fans are far from impressed. The comedy duo are preparing to make their comeback with a fresh new sketch show later this year, but an early preview has left audiences divided.
Fans are unsure about what to expect from the upcoming Channel 4 series after the broadcaster released an airport-themed sketch on social media as a taster. Many were thrilled to hear the pair will be returning to our screens, but a few expressed hope that their new material would improve from what they saw in the teaser, reports the Express.
A discussion thread on the r/BritishTV Reddit forum blew up as one enthusiastic supporter commented: “It’s nice to see sketch comedy returning!”
Someone else defended Mitchell and Webb’s material, stating: “I enjoyed this sketch, there are some glum sods in this sub,” while a third responded: “I don’t know if this is funny or just depressingly accurate.”
One critic observed: “Felt like Mitchell and Webb acting in a sketch written by Lee Mack and Catherine Tate.”
Another viewer clearly has conflicting feelings about the preview: “I’ll be fair and say I did laugh at a couple of jokes in it, but it also felt very dated in terms of subject matter.”
“Not saying every sketch has to be cutting edge, but it’s weird to promote the show with a sketch that’s basically the same as one that plenty of online sketch comedians have done before.”
Someone else branded the joke as “pretty unfunny and obvious,” so it seems Mitchell and Webb have a rather tough audience to please. Their new show is set to air on Channel 4 later this year and the pair released a joint statement ahead of the good news.
They said: “When Channel 4 asked us to do another sketch show we were startled, bemused and available. It’s a perilous time for the industry and so it’s our hope that relaunching the trickiest genre of comedy is a brilliant piece of counter intuitive commissioning.”
“We’re confident that unlike Roger Moore with his shoe on the bonnet of a car teetering on the edge of a cliff in For Your Eyes Only [REPLACE WITH 21ST CENTURY REFERENCE?] we’re not about to give British TV comedy a final lethal nudge into the abyss.”
