Gregg Wallace gushes over ‘new start’ as fired judges’ final MasterChef airs

MasterChef has returned for the show’s 21st season and both John Torode and Gregg Wallace, who were recently fired from their roles as hosts, are featured throughout

Gregg Wallace and John Torode both feature heavily in the new season of MasterChef.

The first three episodes of the BBC cooking competition series can be streamed on BBC iPlayer and episode one runs for 58 minutes. Gregg Wallace appears within the first 30 seconds of the show and tells one contestant: “That is a cracker of a job.”

In another clip during the intro, Gregg says: “Wipe the stoves, get yourselves a clean apron and let’s find ourselves some talent.”

As the contestants are introduced, Gregg welcomes them into the MasterChef kitchen with open arms and tells them: “This is the start of a brand new competition,” before informing the stars that they have one hour and 20 minutes to complete their task.

John has also returned to the BBC series alongside Gregg and can be seen relaying information about the judges’ expectations to the 2025 hopefuls.

Hosts Gregg and John were fired from their roles on the cooking show after a report into conduct on the programme upheld allegations against them.

The BBC has decided to air the series anyway, stating that it was “the right thing to do” for the amateur chefs that took part. Gregg and John are prominent figures throughout series 21, which was added to BBC iPlayer on 6 August and is set to be broadcast at 8pm on BBC One on the same day.

Over on X/Twitter, one person complained: “Without the banter and build-up by the hosts theres no narrative so the highly edited MasterChef falls strangely flat . At least the contestants got their moment – kind of,” while someone else simply said they “won’t be watching”.

The show appears to be thoroughly edited, with much of the pair’s usual banter, jokes and chatter stripped from the show. TV critic Scott Bryan noted that the duo are “there to explain things, link parts of the programme and review the food,” but are “not there for entertainment.”

Former Celebrity MasterChef star Kirsty Wark has even suggested that the BBC could have re-filmed the 2025 series without Gregg and John’s involvement.

Episode one’s description reads: “The biggest cooking competition on TV returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer to uncover the UK’s best amateur cooks and celebrate the food that brings so many together.”

“Over eight weeks, this year’s ambitious cooks take on the cooking adventure of a lifetime, hoping to chop, whisk and sizzle their way to claiming the ultimate culinary prize – the MasterChef trophy.”
