TV fans have shared their top hidden gems across BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and My5 – from gritty dramas to underrated comedies, here’s what to stream right now…
If you’ve scrolled endlessly through the menus of iPlayer, ITVX or Channel 4 without finding something new to watch, then it’s time to take note…
TV fans have been sharing their best ‘hidden gem’ recommendations online, and there’s plenty worth adding to your watchlist.
One viewer singled out Ludwig, David Mitchell’s darkly comic crime drama that aired last year on BBC One, describing it as “excellent” and saying they “can’t wait for series 2”.
Over on ITVX, they recommended Joan, the gripping true-crime inspired drama about a desperate mother who turns to the criminal underworld, starring Sophie Turner.
And if you’re after something tense, Nightsleeper on BBC iPlayer offers a high-stakes “hackjacking” thriller set aboard an overnight train. For period drama fans, Channel 5’s The Hardacres – an adaptation of Peter Whitfield’s novels – can be streamed on My5.
Another user gave a bumper list of iPlayer must-sees. Alongside heavy-hitters like Happy Valley, Line of Duty (though they suggest “ignoring the last series”), and Fleabag, they praised In My Skin and This Is Going to Hurt, as well as Bump, an Australian comedy-drama they “found good”. The prison drama Time, written by Jimmy McGovern (with Helen Black co-writing series 2), also comes highly recommended.
On ITVX, the same fan suggested Grace, Douglas Is Cancelled, Vera, Breathtaking, Unforgotten, Prime Suspect and Maternal, the latter described as “a very underrated comedy-drama” cancelled after just one series. They also noted ITVX’s extensive film library as worth browsing.
Channel 4’s offerings include After the Party, Shameless, The X-Files, Kiri (from writer Jack Thorne), sci-fi drama Humans, Russell T Davies’ acclaimed It’s A Sin, and National Treasure, praised for its “incredible cast”.
Between these three platforms, and a dash of My5, there’s no shortage of quality television to dive into. The only hard part is now deciding what to watch first this weekend.
