Superman and Star Wars star Terence Stamp dies as tributes pour in for a legend

Hollywood actor Terence Stamp, whose career spanned more than six decades across stage and screen, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, his family confirmed.

They described him as leaving behind “an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come.”

Terence passed away age 87 and is well known for starring in some huge Hollywood productions such as Superman and Star Wars, where he played General Zod and Finis Valorum respectively.

Born in Stepney, East London, in July 1938, Stamp rose from seemingly humble beginnings and rose to become one of the defining actors of his generation.

After training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, he made his film debut in Billy Budd (1962). His striking performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and marked the beginning of an incredibly impressive career.

During the 1960s, Stamp became a key figure in British cinema and a symbol of the Swinging London era. He starred in films such as The Collector (1965), which brought him a Cannes Best Actor prize, and Far From the Madding Crowd (1967), alongside Julie Christie, with whom he was also romantically linked.

His impressive acting CV also consists of titles such as Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), to Hollywood thrillers such as Wall Street (1987) and Valkyrie (2008), to science fiction in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) and The Adjustment Bureau (2011).

He also voiced Superman’s father, Jor-El, in the TV series Smallville, which further added to his connection to the franchise .

In his latter years, he remained active both on screen and in writing. .Away from acting, he wrote several memoirs, including The Ocean Fell Into the Drop (2004), reflecting his long interest in spirituality, health, and wellbeing.

Fans have paid tributes to the acting legend online, with one writing on X: “RIP Legendary Terence Stamp – Outstanding Londoner Great Loss To Acting His Family & Followers God Bless Sir.”

A second added: “Terence Stamp has passed away at age 87. Thank you, Terry…we will kneel today in your honor. #terencestamp #generalzod”

While a third penned: “RIP Terence Stamp! A formative crush that luckily lead me into some wondeful corners of cinema. We were lucky to have an actor with such range and taste.”
