Craig David reckons he’s the Willy Wonka of pop and dishes out as many choccies as he does hits.

The R&B smoothie, back with new LP Commitment, says his incredible longevity is partly down to the sweet stuff which he loves to give away because it disarms people and raises a smile.

He explained: “It goes all the way back to the title of Born To Do It, which came from the Willy Wonka movie. One time I had an accountant come over, very business-like, but when he saw a big bowl of Lindt chocolates, he turned into a kid for five, 10 seconds before shifting right back and adjusting his tie.

“I see the same effect every time. I used to give people big bars of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, but now it’s the Marvellous Creations chocolate bars – we’re into popping candy, we’ve taken it up, man!

“We can’t just give you some plain, old-school… Nah, we’ve got to jazz this! You throw a chocolate bar into the mix and you can really see the true person for a moment, I just love it.”

7 Days of choccies yes plz.

Besides the treats Craig believes he’s a bit of a music pioneer after 26 years of hits. Reflecting on his success he said: “The floodgates opened after the success of Born To Do It. The album was at the forefront of the garage scene, and me being from Southampton allowed kids in towns or villages with a computer and a microphone, to say, ‘Well, if this guy can have a breakout song’.”

He also set the bar for UK acts in America back in the day when others struggled.

Craig told Music Week: “Then it transcended and opened things up, showing that R&B from this country can really land in America. The song Walking Away really changed the game. I was doing acoustic performances on TV of songs that were straight-up garage or R&B. We were breaking the norm. I’m really proud and honoured that I could open doors.”

However, Craig is still able to remain humble through it all: “I still look at myself as a student in the game.

“It gets stale when you get stuck telling stories about how many records you’ve sold and having bare plaques on the wall. Nobody really cares. It’s a nice story, but what are you doing today?”
