Huw Edwards clutches three bottles of fizz with beardy new look after BBC axe

Ex-BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has been pictured for the first time in months, sporting a new look and was clutching three bottles of prosecco on his birthday

Shamed ex-BBC News anchor Huw Edwards has been spotted clutching bottles of prosecco amid claims he’s yet to return his BBC wages. Edwards, 64, was seen for the first time in half a year, sporting a drastically different appearance. Last year, Edwards admitted guilt to three charges of creating indecent images of children and has scarcely been seen in public since – last snapped vaping back in February.

Fast forward six months, and the fallen news anchor was caught on camera on his birthday earlier this week, looking almost unrecognisable with mini bottles of prosecco in hand. The former BBC face was seen donning a fresh, short white stubbly beard and thick black-rimmed glasses as he stepped out.

Edwards, now a convicted sex offender, was dressed in a light blue polo shirt, a dark navy jacket with large pockets and button detailing, paired with navy trousers and a black belt.

He wore a stern expression as he was photographed holding onto three small bottles of bubbly, a baseball cap and a receipt, reports the Mirror.

Despite reports last year that his wife Vicky Flind had initiated divorce proceedings, the disgraced former BBC News presenter, who once reported on monumental events including Queen Elizabeth’s death before his downfall, was also seen with his wedding ring still firmly in place.

Vicky and Edwards were wed for three decades and had five children together. Reports emerged in October 2024 that Vicky had initiated divorce proceedings and kicked him out of their family home after Edwards subjected his wife to absolute torment.

The disgraced presenter was spotted clutching the miniature bottles of bubbly as he made his way to his car in Swansea, Wales on his 64th birthday.

Reports this week revealed that Edwards has infuriated BBC staff as the fallen star still refuses to hand back his £200,000 wages despite mounting pressure to do so. BBC chiefs disclosed last year that they had formally demanded the shamed newsreader return the money he pocketed following his arrest.

Following Edwards’ 2023 arrest, the BBC kept paying his salary until his resignation in 2024. While the BBC insists they are pursuing Edwards for repayment of his earnings during that timeframe, it’s believed he hasn’t stumped up a single pound.

“Everyone is raging about it – firstly at Huw, who is a disgrace, secondly that gutless bosses seem unwilling or unable to do anything about it,” a source told the Sun.

In an earlier statement, the BBC declared: “Huw Edwards has not returned any money paid to him by the BBC after his arrest, in respect of any of his work for either BBC public service or the BBC’s commercial operations.

“The BBC has asked for all the money paid to Huw Edwards by the BBC for the period November 2023 (arrest) and April 2024 (resignation) to be returned.”

The television personality experienced a dramatic downfall in 2023 when allegations surfaced that an unidentified BBC presenter had shelled out tens of thousands of pounds for explicit photographs. A mother alleged that this had been ongoing since 2020, when her child was just 17, and continued for three years, fuelling her child’s drug addiction.

He was subsequently suspended from the BBC.

Later, Edwards was identified by his wife Vicky in a statement where she revealed he had been “suffering from serious mental health issues” and was undergoing in-patient treatment.

Further into the year, Edwards found himself under arrest during an unrelated investigation which led to the confiscation of his phone. This unveiled his involvement in WhatsApp conversations with Alex Williams.

He eventually pleaded guilty to creating indecent images of children and received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, along with an order to complete a sex offender programme.
