One of the key figures behind hit Netflix show Emily in Paris has suddenly died whilst filming the next series.

Filming had been taking place in the luxurious Italian city of Venice as part of a ten-day shoot between August 15 and 25 for the Netflix hit. All of the stars of the show were in the city when the dramatic death occurred.

According to the Sun, all but one scene had been filmed before the show’s production could be wrapped up. However, the show’s assistant director Diego Borella, 47, was soon struck down and collapsed.

Borella, a well-respected director, soon took a turn for the worse, prompting a response from the emergency services. Medical professionals were called to the scene at the Hotel Danieli at around 7pm on Thursday (August 21), but despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Diego was revered as a professional director from Venice itself, but boasted a huge portfolio, working in other cities such as Rome, London and New York. Italian newspaper La Repubblica added that he was also a much-loved author, mostly channelling his work into children’s stories and fairytales.

In the wake of Diego’s death, filming for the fifth season of the show has been halted. The show is expected to be released on the streaming service on December 18, just days before Christmas.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting to see what happens to Emily Cooper – played by Lily Collins – after she fell for Italian hunk Marcello, played by 33-year-old actor Eugenio Franceschini. Back in May, there were signs Paris could be swapped for Rome, as Netflix crews were seen around the city.

On top of this, Lily was also seen to be riding an iconic Italian scooter and shooting scenes around the streets of Rome at the time. This comes as her character Emily prepares for a new chapter in the Italian capital, where she is set to work at the Agence Grateau.

But despite the huge expansion of the plot, the show has been hit with setbacks in recent months. Back in April, one of the show’s stars – Camille Razat – announced she would not be coming back to the storyline.

Filming has been halted for the time being ahead of the scheduled release of the series in December

In a huge moment on her social media, Camille said she would be bidding Emily in Paris adieu, sharing a slew of photos from her time on the set of the show. Having played one of Emily’s best friends in the show, fans will be left guessing what will happen as the new series is now just months away.
