Fans of classic 80s show Knight Rider could be in for a treat, as the TV show is currently going through an adaptation to potentially bring it to the big screen
Cult Eighties TV series Knight Rider is poised to ride again on the big screen – and David Hasselhoff is hoping for a return. The American production team behind Netflix hit Cobra Kai – a modern day version of The Karate Kid – is working on a script for the iconic car-based series.
Hasselhoff became a global star playing a cop who fights crime with a super intelligent talking car called KITT Producers Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are in early talks to make a movie based on the hit show, which initially ran for four series.
Hasselhoff has made it clear to several Hollywood studios of his desire to return as character Michael Knight. Over the last 15 years ideas have been proposed for TV and film projects, but none managed to get Hollywood studio bosses’ approval.
A Los Angeles film source said: “David holds the character of Michael very close to his heart and has been on board for the ideas to have a return to the series.
“He has had meetings in the past, with everything from a spoof to a grittier crime show.
“David has always hoped to set the show back in the 1980s and lean into the pop culture, music, fashion and novelty of AI powering a vehicle.
“It is early days yet, but the word has gone out that they want David’s involvement and support for the concept. And that could be very exciting for older fans.”
The source added: “David has the potential to be a villain too. In the original, his character had an evil doppelganger called Garthe Knight, which he played with a moustache.”
The Hoff, 73, may struggle to land an action role, because he has been dealing with knee pain in recent years.
Knight Rider ran in the UK on ITV from 1982 to 1986.
The 1982 Pontiac Trans Am, known as K.I.T.T., also featured in two movies in the 1990s – Knight Rider 2000 and Knight Rider 2010.
A spin-off series, Team Knight Rider, also debuted in 1997, but was canceled after 22 episodes.
