Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden issues urgent plea as she says ‘get it checked’

Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has shared how she had a ‘heart-sinking’ moment during her latest hospital.

Amy Dowden has revealed she experienced a ‘heart-sinking’ moment during her most recent hospital appointment when medical staff mentioned the ‘busy’ period they’ve been experiencing on the ward.

The professional dancer is currently gearing up for her comeback to Strictly Come Dancing after being confirmed by the BBC in the professional line-up for the 2025 series.

Currently, there haven’t been any official pairings announces, although fans think one pro has given away which celebrity they’re competing with this year.

In 2024, Amy’s time on the show was cut short, after her official ballroom comeback from battling cancer, due to a foot injury.

Recently, she has been documenting how she’s “happier and healthier” than ever, with fans excitedly anticipating the return of the beloved dance programme, which has now officially unveiled its celebrity cast ahead of the series premiere on September 20.

Whilst she continues to flourish following her breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment – which encompassed a single mastectomy and chemotherapy – in 2023, Amy must still attend regular hospital appointments, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The Welsh performer had previously detailed that because her cancer was hormone-driven, she requires monthly visits to the treatment ward for an injection that “keeps the hormones at bay”.

On Thursday (August 28), Amy shared her latest hospital visit and alongside a selfie, she said: “Good morning, monthly injection time on the oncology unit. But although tired from travelling later last night and little sleep, I’m absolutely buzzing from yesterdays record day!

“Literally such a fab day performing to a lovely audience with the Strictly family. Forever grateful to be back living the dream, feeling like me again!”.

In a subsequent video, Amy revealed that during her conversation with the ward team, they mentioned how overwhelmed they’d been, which left her feeling both heartbroken and thankful.

She continued: “I wanted to come on and say ‘hello’ but I’ve literally just finished my appointment and I went in there and it’s always do lovely to see the wonderful Sheldon Unit.

“As I always say, they’re real-life heroes, everybody who works on that department. But I said, ‘how’s it been?’ and they said, ‘It’s been so busy. Ridiculously busy’. My heart just sunk because that means that more people are needing treatment or more people are being diagnosed.

“My heart just absolutely sunk, just feeling for all those [people]. But it made me realise how important it is to raise awareness, to share my story and to remember – if you’re not checking yourself, then who is!

“Early diagnosis can save your life, so please, please make sure you’re looking after yourself. You know your body better than anybody else and if you feel different or something’s not right, get it checked out by a GP.”

She continued: “I’m in awe of all that work on the unit. They work so, so hard. But also, seeing the joy that Strictly brings them… All asking how it’s going and being excited for me.

“There was a lady in the corner having treatment and as I went to leave, she came over and she had a big smile and said, ‘My friends are not going to believe it, can I have a picture?’ and for me to be able to just chat a bit of Strictly while she’s having her treatment and see the oy it brings, makes me so proud to be part of a show that just brings smiles to the nation.”

Strictly Come Dancing is set to ait on BBC One next month.
