Sir Rod Stewart has criticised Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey for boycotting a state banquet with Donald Trump.

The singer-songwriter, 80, sarcastically said “well done” to the MP for snubbing the “only man” that could end the Ukraine war. Sir Ed revealed he’s giving it a miss over accusations the US President has not done what he can to end the “horrifying” war in Gaza.

Maggie May rocker Sir Rod said: “Well done Sir Ed Davey for snubbing an invitation from Buckingham Palace to meet the only man that could put an end to the war in the Ukraine… Donald Trump.”

Sir Rod has previously said he’s not a “great fan” of Trump despite previously being pals.

The Sailing singer claimed he used to love hanging out with the US leader because he’s a “man’s man”. But he said the Orange Manbaby has now “become another guy” since re-entering the White House.

Sir Ed also slammed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for being “too soft” on Trump. He said his decision not to attend the state banquet was “the one way” to send a message to both Trump and Sir Keir.

The politician said: “They cannot close their eyes and wish away the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Donald Trump can stop this catastrophe in Gaza and get the hostages released.”

Speaking as LBC’s guest presenter on Friday (August 29), he said that if the UK bows to Trump “our voice will be less effective in other parts of the world”.

He insisted: “We have to treat Trump differently. I think Keir Starmer is too soft on President Donald Trump. We need to put pressure on Trump to do what only he can do to stop the killing in Gaza, stop the famine and get the hostages released.”

But Tory MP James Cleverly called Sir Ed’s move “the most foolish of performative gesture politics”. He said: “Diplomacy is not about only talking to people that you agree with. It’s about talking to people you disagree with.

“I know that sad Davey has got deep disagreements with Donald Trump. I respect the fact he has disagreements with Donald Trump.

“But when you disagree with someone on the international stage, talk to them. Unless, of course, you don’t think you have any influence.”
