‘Unbearable’ Keira Knightly film breaks viewers as they refuse to rewatch

One of Keira Knightley’s most gut-wrenching projects, which heartbroken film fans have branded utterly “tragic”, has left audiences in tears as they promise to only watch once

Film fans are refusing to watch one of Keira Knightley’s films more than once.

The 2007 war romance film Atonement stars James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai, Vanessa Redgrave, Juno Temple, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brenda Blethyn and Ailidh Mackay.

Directed by Joe Wright, Atonement is based on the 2001 Ian McEwan novel of the same name. The plot follows a crime and the consequences that follow in the six decades after, beginning right back in the 1930s.

Wright was the youngest director to ever open the Venice International Film Festival at 35 and his project was a smash hit.

Atonement was later nominated at the 80th Academy Awards and 61st British Academy Film Awards. It swiped a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Over on X/Twitter, fans are still gushing over Atonement’s love story despite the film being released almost two decades ago: “Atonement is such a banger [film] because it’s tragic and it’s everything to me,”

One person slammed Saoirse Ronan’s incredible performance and wrote: “Her character in Atonement one of the most unbearable characters to exist in cinema history.”

Someone tweeted: “What movie ending hurt you so much you swore you’d never watch it again?” to which another X/Twitter user replied: “The ending of Atonement (2007) is a devastating twist of narrative and memory. A haunting meditation on guilt, storytelling, and the lives we rewrite too late.”

Keira’s bright green dress has become one of the most iconic outfits in Hollywood

On Rotten Tomatoes, Atonement has an impressive 83 percent score and rave reviews from critics. One of them said: “Your heart breaks for Cecilia, Robbie, and what should have been, as well as an adult Briony…”

Another complimentary critic typed: “This level of storytelling and artistry is a rare treat, demonstrating director Joe Wright’s knack for working with adapted material.”
