Peter Andre’s latest choice of telly gig seems slightly mysterious, girl. Katie Price’s ex is set to debut as pathologist George Constantinos
Peter Andre plays a crime-solving pathologist in new series The Sunshine Murders, out this week on Channel 5. The casting has raised a few eyebrows among viewers who don’t see him as the most obvious choice.
But TV history is full of classic examples of doctors who moonlight as detectives. Here we take a look at some of the most memorable…
Silent but deadly: Emilia Fox is a force to be reckoned with as Dr Nikki Alexander in BBC drama Silent Witness.
The character, who joined the cast in 2004, somehow got a place in the investigative team by gate-crashing Leo Dalton’s mortuary to use his facial recognition software.
She married forensic scientist Jack Hodgson (played by David Caves) in the series 28 finale.
Doctor who? Jack Klugman was abrasive but ethical as medical sleuth Dr R. Quincy in NBC crime show Quincy M.E.
His first name was never revealed in the series, which ran from 1976-83, and regulations of the time meant his autopsies could never be shown on screen.
He was said to be based on real-life Los Angeles County Medical Examiner Dr Thomas Noguchi, who investigated the deaths of Marilyn Monroe, John Belushi and Janis Joplin.
Morse glowed: Amanda Hillwood melted the heart of Inspector Morse when she appeared in his ITV crime series.
She played Dr Grayling Russell, a pathologist who helped the detective – portrayed by John Thaw – investigate a series of murders.
But despite them flirting up a storm and making plans to visit the opera together, she disappeared after four episodes and was never seen again.
Double duty: Clare Holman replaced Dr Russell in Inspector Morse, playing Dr Laura Hobson – a young Oxford graduate who seemed immune to his OAP charms.
She was much more impressed with his sidekick Robert Lewis, joining him in spin-off series Lewis from 2006 and eventually dating him.
Clare and Kevin Whatley are the only actors to play the same character in both shows.
Murder mystery: Dr. George Bullard faced non-stop excitement as the resident pathologist in ITV’s Midsomer Murders.
Played by Barry Jackson, he appeared in the first 14 series of the cosy crime drama, before the actor’s death from cancer in 2013.
He was previously married to fellow doctor Kath Bullard, who was said to have mysteriously died during a tour of a slaughterhouse.
Not the Messiah: She may have been fearless as Peaky Blinders matriarch Polly Gray, but Helen McCrory drew the line at attending an autopsy.
While she enjoyed playing pathologist Rachel Price in BBC crime series Messiah, she wasn’t as fond of researching the role.
She said: “I walked into make-up and opened a pathology book, literally took one look and shut it straight away.”
Sitting Ducky: Kindly Dr Donald “Ducky” Mallard faced an endless parade of dead bodies in US crime series NCIS.
He started off as the team’s chief medical examiner, before ‘retiring’ in series 16 and coming back as an on-site historian.
Actor David McCallum, who starred with Steve McQueen in 1963 film The Great Escape, continued to play the role until his death aged 90 in 2023.
