Pop star Pink turns 46 today and many of her supporters have been shocked after discovering the backstory of her stage name – and it turns out it’s quite raunchy
Pink, who continues to delight her die-hard fans with her music, daredevil persona and jaw-dropping live performances, is celebrating her 46th birthday today. But many of her fans are only just discovering the meaning behind her the pop superstar’s stage name.
Fans flocked to Reddit to give their thoughts on the real reason why the singer, born Alecia Beth Moore on this day in 1979, adopted her colourful moniker. But as will be revealed below, her supporters were left screaming “What the fuchsia?” on uncovering the raunchy back story.
The development is a welcome change to the alarming image she posted on her Instagram page last week, in which she was pictured hooked up to an IV drip. Pink had suffered a nasty bout of E.coli while on holiday with her family, but she brushed off the illness in her trademark acerbic style.
“When you go on vacation and have food and E. coli decides to move into your gut you kill it with friends and daughters and red wine and a vitamin IV concoction,” she quipped. “Ahhh life and lemons and lemonade and great memories that I might remember.”
Meanwhile, her fans had been throwing around reasons as to why the singer chose Pink as her stage name. Some people guessed she was simply partial to the colour pink or that she named herself after a L’Oreal hair colour type, but the real inspiration behind her name is somewhat saucy.
According to a snippet on Life and Style, later echoed on IMDb, it reads: “I thought Pink got her name from her infamous hair colour. Anyone else? No? Ok.
“Turns out, Alecia Beth Moore didn’t get her inspo from a bottle of L’Oréal. Instead, the What About Us singer dreamt up the moniker while watching Reservoir Dogs – and the meaning is actually as raunchy as hell.”
Pink revealed: “My best friend had never seen a white girl’s vagina before so he asked me if I could see it, so I showed it to him and he said ‘It’s pink!’ Then my friends started calling me ‘Mr. Pink’. If you’ve never seen Quentin Tarantino’s violent film, Steve Buscemi’s character is also named ‘Mr. Pink’.”
She did admit that her choice of stage name hasn’t exactly been met with universal approval, adding: “I’ve been on the receiving end of grumbles for a good while now. I’m OK with it.”
This bombshell left one Reddit user completely gobsmacked: “And I thought all along it was her pink hair.” Another speculated: “Isn’t it because she used to blush easily as a child?”
A third joined in: “She told Radio Disney it was because of her blushing. That was the family safe explanation. She also said it’s a vagina reference.” However, another suggested: “I think she concocted that tale just so she could dub herself Pink.”
Pink’s last album Trustfall came out in 2023, the latest in a long line of releases since she first burst onto the scene aged 15 as a member of short-lived girl group, Choice. Her career rocketed when she went solo in 2000, with her LPs Can’t Take Me Home, Missundaztood and Try This cementing her as a pop powerhouse.
Pink is also an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and her music resonates strongly with many people in the community. She once told Gay Times: “I think [my LGBTQ+ following] just speaks to who I am and what I believe in, and what I’ve always been. I am definitely an ally and to be understood for that is a wonderful feeling. For any of us to be understood, that’s what we want in life, right? We want to love, be loved and be seen.”
