Phillip Schofield defends Ruth and Eamonn after This Morning hot tub joke

Phillip Schofield has taken to social media for the first time since bravely coming out on This Morning.

The ITV legend has thanked co-stars Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes for their support both on and off the camera.

Taking to Twitter, Phillip wrote: “Can I just say that Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were utterly magnificent with me today, privately downstairs just the three of us and upstairs in front of the world.

“I couldn’t have hoped for a better, calming and loving set of hugs and support, I adore them both.”

Referencing the backlash Eamonn got for joking about Phil and Holly in a hot tub, Phillip added: “And for the record, Eamonn Holmes made me laugh, he lightened a very emotional moment and I’m very happy that he did.”

In another post, Phil encouraged others to be honest about their sexuality.

“My entire family have and said it’s ok, I love you.

“Every person I tell it gets a little easier.”

Thinking about his family, Philip added: “I am very aware Steph and the girls are watching this. We’ve spent a lot of time together.”

In a bid to lighten the air as all involved fought back tears, Eamonn said: “I’m disappointed in a couple of ways.

“First of all I thought you were going to come in and announce you had resigned and I could have your job, but that wasn’t to be.

“And the second thing, there is this great imponderable in life that has always bothered me, I thought how come he can sit in a hot tub with Holly Willoughby and Steph doesn’t have a problem and Dan doesn’t have a problem.”

While the comment was simply a way to break the ice and meant in good faith, some viewers branded it “tacky”.

Taking to to Twitter to address the backlash and support Phil, Eamonn shared a snap him hugging Philip before adding: “A picture paints a thousand words.

“This is a man who was in pain, who today confided in Ruth and I and who knows we stand in support of him, his family and his sexuality.

“Also unlike some, he appreciated a laugh to break the tension. Hoping you find happiness.”
