Phillip Schofield 'wanted to know how to overcome pain of being gay' before coming out

Phillip Schofield read a book about how to overcome the pain of growing up gay in a straight world before his decision to come out live on This Morning.

The brave star gave the honest interview of his life when he sat down with best friend and This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby to admit he is gay.

Phillip, 57, emotionally told Holly how he sat down with daughters Molly and Ruby and his wife Stephanie Lowe to tell them about his true feelings before they showered him with love.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday morning, Phillip replied to a newspaper editorial which encouraged him to read a book called The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man’s World.

Written by American clinical psychologist Alan Downs, the book says it “will help gay men profoundly understand their dichotomous extremes”.

It also promises to “positively change the lives of gay men who read it”.

Responding to the article, Phil wrote: “Thank you so much, and I’ve read the book already lol x.”

In a heartfelt messages posted to his six million followers on Friday evening, the Tv legend added: “Can I just say that Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were utterly magnificent with me today, privately downstairs just the three of us and upstairs in front of the world.

“I couldn’t have hoped for a better, calming and loving set of hugs and support, I adore them both.”

Referencing the backlash Eamonn got for joking about Phil and Holly in a hot tub, Phillip added: “And for the record, Eamonn Holmes made me laugh, he lightened a very emotional moment and I’m very happy that he did.”

In another post, Phil encouraged others to be honest about their sexuality.

The National Television Award winner said: “You will never know how important your support has been today, I’ve read as much as I can.

“Please please, no matter your age or your thoughts talk to someone, don’t let your head beat you an hopefully you’ll find out that your friends and family have a remarkable ability to surpsise you with their love and understanding.”

Phil signed off the post: “#BeKind.”

This Morning continues on Monday at 10am on ITV.
