Elton John talks being 'screwed up' as he collects first Oscars gong in 25 years

Elton John was overjoyed as he bagged the gong for the Best Original Song at the Oscars last night.

The Your Song hitmaker end-titles theme for his own biopic, Rocketman, bagged the accolade at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Elton penned I’m Gonna Love Me Again with his lyricist of 53 years Bernie Taupin and thanked his life-long friends for sticking by him through his struggles.

It’s not the first time the British star has picked up an Oscar.

25 years ago, he won for Can You Feel the Love Tonight? from The Lion King at the 1995 ceremony, shared with lyricist Tim Rice.

This was Bernie’s first-ever Oscar, and Elton admitted it’s a “dream for us”.

Taking to the stage in a snappy purple suit, Elton began: “Thank you to Bernie, who has been the constant thing in my life — when I was screwed up, when I was normal, he’s always been there for me.

“This is a dream for us. We’ve never been nominated before for anything like this,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bernie chimed in: “Being here with this guy, I don’t have words for it. This is just justification for 53 years of just hammering it out and doing what we do.

Rocketman, which hit cinemas to critical acclaim last years, documents Elton’s breakthrough years in the 1970s and his transformation from shy piano prodigy to international superstar.

Bernie has previously spoken about the original song during an interview with Variety magazine.

“Ultimately everybody looked at each other and said it makes sense to do something totally original, seeing that we’re supposed to be in the here and now, and we need something that sums up the movie and what we can expect from the arc of this character’s projection from here on out,” he said.

“It was sort of a no-brainer that the song had to continue with that redemptive quality about it — something that was uplifting.”
