Soldier overcome with emotion as he proposes to wife live on This Morning

A solider got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend to marry him live on This Morning today after being away from each other for six months.

Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were on presenting duty today as regular hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby took some time off for the school holidays.

The husband and wife duo surprised an oblivious Mercedes live in the studio on Monday morning.

The young mum thought she was on a tour of the ITV studio before Eamonn told her she was the star of the show.

Mercedes told Eamonn and Ruth that she hadn’t seen or spoken to partner Grenadier guard Gregg for six months while stationed in the Falklands island.

Gregg was due to return home on Friday but due to the adverse weather conditions he couldn’t get back leaving his family heartbroken.

A video message to Mercedes from Gregg played and Ruth told Mercedes that she could send a reply to her boyfriend.

As she started speaking, Gregg appeared on the set wearing his full uniform.

The surprises didn’t stop there as the solider got down on one knee and asked Mercedes if she’d become his wife live on air.

Gregg later confirmed that he wanted to do it two years ago, and described his partner as a “strong individual”.

Mercedes, who said yes to Gregg, later revealed to Eamonn and Ruth that the pair had met on Instagram.

This Morning team treated the happy couple to an all-expenses paid honeymoon trip to the Dominican Republic to congratulate their exciting news.

ITV viewers were left in tears following the shock proposal.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “I’m not crying, you are.”

Another added:”I’m bawling my eyes out.”

A third gushed: “Congrats to the couple, I can’t stop crying.”

A fourth penned: “Ok i’m crying.”

This Morning airs on weekdays on ITV at 10am
