BBC confirm John Newman's brother James will represent UK in Eurovision 2020

Singer-songwriter James Newman has been confirmed as the UK’s entry to Eurovision this year.

The singer has worked alongside some of the biggest names in music including Olly Murs, Ed Sheeran and Rudimental.

Yorkshire-born James, 32, is signed to BMG record label who is working alongside the BBC to select a UK entrant for the 65th Eurovision Song Contest this May.

As well as working alongside singing superstars, he’s also related to one.

James is the older brother to Love Me Again hitmaker John Newman, 29.

The big news was announced this morning on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 4, as well as the official Eurovision Twitter account.

BBC have dropped hints on social media over the past few days and it was finally revealed on Thursday that James will be flying to Rotterdam to represent the United Kingdom this year.

James will be hoping to win the competition, or end up on the right hand side of the leaderboard, with his song My Last Breath.

The Grammy nominated musician penned UK number one hit single Blame, performed by Calvin Klein and brother John and Rudimental’s Waiting All Night.

He also wrote Lay It All On Me by Rudimental featuring Ed Sheeran, Jess Glynne’s All I Am and Little Mix’s Love Me Like You Do as well as tracks for Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Kesha.

The UK’s Eurovision entry is usually chosen through a public vote on the Eurovision: You Decide, which was last year hosted by former Great British Bake-Off host Mel Giedroyc.

However, in a shake-up to proceedings, the entry was chosen by BBC and record label BMG.

James is hoping to improve the UK’s performance last year, after Michael Rice came last in Tel Aviv.

The All Together Now champion failed to impress with his ballad Bigger Than Us, which just received 16 votes in the grand final.

In another devastating blow for Michael, a mix-up with the vote meant that his performance achieved just 11 points.

The singer blamed his low score on Brexit.

Eurovision Song Contestant final will be held on May 16
