Davina McCall talks 'terrifying moment' she was hospitalised after drug overdose

Davina McCall has opened up about a time she overdosed after drugs took her to a “very dark place”.

The television presenter, 52, spoke to a crowd a The Sun on Sunday’s International Women’s Day event.

Davina warned against the perils of drugs as she spoke about her crippling past drug addiction.

The fitness fanatic went through a dark period right at the start of her career where she was addicted to class A drug heroin and smoked cannabis.

The former Big Brother host explained: “Drugs took me to a very, very, very dark place and, one night, I overdosed.

“It was very frightening as it was a very gradual overdose. I’d had a cocktail of drugs, because I didn’t want to feel normal.

“I was constantly trying to escape myself — I was like a piece of fruit rotting from the inside.

“So then I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just take a valium’ and the next thing I knew I woke up in hospital. At my lowest point, when I was filled with self hatred, it was literally a case of ‘get clean, or die’.”

The mum-of-three became clean within about a year after her overdose with the help of going to Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

She still occasionally attends meetings, as well as the odd therapy session “if I feel like a top-up”.

Davina began her career on MTV in the 1990s before her hosting role on Channel 4’s dating programme Streetmate.

She remained on Big Brother until 2010, and has also fronted programmes including game show The Million Pound Drop, winter sports reality show The Jump and ITV’s Long Lost Family.
