Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams set for lesbian romance in Marvel film The New Mutants

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is set for a lesbian romance in Marvel horror film The New Mutants.

The actress, 22, plays Rahne Sinclair in the latest flick from the American superhero series and her character will get involved a same-sex love story with Danielle Moonstar played by Blu Hunt.

The teen mutants are plagued by phantom apparitions and plenty of other evil creatures but director Josh Boone teased there is also a “beautiful love story” within the movie.

He told Entertainment Weekly: “It’s sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”

The new Mutants follows a group of mutants at a secret location held against their will.

The gang face terrifying visions as they are forced to confront demons from their pasts, but despite the circumstances, Dani and Rahne are able to for a close bond.

Speaking about her latest role Maisie, who played Arya Strak in Game of Thrones, said: “Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality.

“If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.”

Maisie later insisted that the love story is not a “gimmick”.

The film star said: “It’s not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality.

“It’s not centred around that and they don’t really necessarily label it.

“No one else does either and no one really questions it.”

The New Mutants, which was filmed in 2017 but had its release date stalled by Disney’s acquisition of Fox, also stars Anya Taylor-Hoy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga and Henry Zaga.

The first trailer for the film was released in October 2017 and fans will be finally be able to watch the movie next moth after years of anticipation.

The New Mutants is released on April 10 in the UK
