Coronation Street bans kissing on set to stop coronavirus spreading

Bosses on ITV’s Coronation Street are believed to be keen to keep the famous soap opera running despite other programmes coming to an abrupt halt amid the current coronavirus outbreak.

Sources claim that any scenes that are set to feature kissing or any similar contact are being rewritten to ensure that “limited physical contact” between the stars.

It’s been reported that a cast member was allegedly sent home after displaying symptoms of coronavirus before they were allowed to return to the set based in Salford.

Speaking to The Sun, an insider said: “All of the soaps are desperate to keep running.

“If they disappear out of the schedules there’s huge gaps which is a major headache.”

The source went on to say: “Coronation Street shoots about six to eight weeks in advance, so viewers might see some kissing in the next month or so, but the scenes they’re shooting right now will have nothing of the sort in. They are taking no chances.

“The longer they can keep cast and crew well, the better, and if a storyline has to suffer slightly by losing a kiss so be it.”

A spokesperson for ITV said: “Scenes with kissing or close contact are being altered to minimise contact.”

It was recently revealed that Corrie’s Gemma Winter is set for heartbreak as she risks having her children taken off her.

Gemma who is currently suffering from postnatal depression is set to reach breaking point in coming weeks.

In scenes that are yet to air, Gemma struggles to cope when four of her babies start crying and she rushes outdoors to get fresh air.

However, she quickly realises that she has locked herself out and cannot get into the house leaving her babies alone.

This isn’t the first time Gemma has put her children in the face of danger – she has previously pushed them out in front of a car.

Coronation Street airs tonight at 7.30pm on ITV One.
