Katie Price Diesel ad banned for ‘sexualising and objectifying’ model

An ad for clothing brand Diesel featuring the model Katie Price has been banned for being likely to cause serious offence and objectifying and sexualising women, the ASA saidAdam Cailler Senior reporter and Reddit team lead and Neil Shaw06:44, 11 Jun 2025Updated 06:44, 11 Jun 2025The advert has been bannedAn advert for fashion label Diesel, featuring model Katie Price, has been deemed irresponsible and likely to cause serious offence due to its objectification and sexualisation of women, according to a watchdog. The ad, which was displayed on the Guardian’s website on March 26, showcased an image of Price donned in a bikini, clutching a handbag to her chest. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received 13 complaints asserting that the ad objectified and sexualised women and featured a model who seemed unhealthily thin. Diesel defended the ad as part of their ‘The Houseguests’ brand campaign, aimed at challenging stereotypes and promoting diversity and inclusion in the fashion industry by representing a broad spectrum of body types.Diesel insisted the ad complied with advertising regulations but confirmed it had been removed from the Guardian website. The brand highlighted that Price, at 46 years old, represented a body type not typically seen in high-end fashion campaigns, noting that the average age for editorial models ranged between 16 and 23.It was deemed to be ‘irresponsible’Diesel maintained that the image was a “celebration of Ms Price’s sexuality and empowerment and was not objectifying, degrading or sexualising”, and “showed Ms Price clearly in control in an active and dynamic pose where she proudly showed off her body and the handbag”.Diesel further stated that Price was renowned for her over-the-top appearance and larger-than-life personality, which included her large lips and breasts as part of her deliberately crafted public image. According to Diesel, this intentionally “exaggerated, eccentric and altered appearance” contributed to the creativity of the advertising campaign, reports Wales Online.Article continues belowDiesel also noted that despite being slender, Price had a good muscle tone and was not unhealthily underweight. The Guardian reported receiving a complaint directly regarding the advert on April 4 and subsequently blocked it from reappearing, as it did not comply with their advertising policies. In a partial uphold of the complaints, the ASA ruled that the bikini only provided partial coverage of Price’s breasts. The ASA also considered the placement of the handbag in front of her stomach, with the handle framing her chest, to draw the viewer’s attention to and accentuate that area of her body. The ASA concluded: “While we acknowledged that Ms Price was shown in a confident and self-assured pose and in control, we considered that because of the positioning of the handbag, which had the effect of emphasising and drawing attention to her breasts, the ad sexualised her in a way that objectified her.”We therefore considered the ad was likely to cause serious offence, was irresponsible and breached the Code.”The ASA dismissed complaints about Price looking excessively skinny, deciding the advert wasn’t irresponsible on those grounds. The watchdog has banned the ad from reappearing and instructed Diesel: “We told Diesel to ensure their future ads were socially responsible and did not cause serious or widespread offence.”Diesel defended their campaign, stating: “Diesel’s latest Houseguests campaign continues its tradition of challenging norms and embracing individuality. A key image features model Katie Price, 46, showcasing a body type rarely seen in high fashion, proving that women of all shapes and ages deserve representation. The photo celebrates confidence and empowerment without objectification.Article continues below”Shared in over 100 countries, it has not received any regulatory complaints, highlighting Diesel’s commitment to respectful, inclusive storytelling.”For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
