  • Eric Church Reached Out to Johnny Cash's Children Ahead of 2020 ACM Awards Performance

Executive producer RAC Clark reveals that the ‘Springsteen’ hitmaker wrote a letter to Rosanne and John Carter Cash to clear the incorporation of ‘Ragged Old Flag’ into ‘Stick That in Your Country’.
    Sep 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – Singer Eric Church only managed to pull off his performance at the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards by penning a letter to Johnny Cash’s two artist children to secure the rights to his work.
Church moved fans by incorporating Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag” into his single “Stick That in Your Country Song” for the recent prizegiving, but the event’s executive producer, RAC Clark, reveals the set almost didn’t happen, because they were having trouble clearing the sample use with the late legend’s estate.
“As we got into it, we found the Cash estate and publishers are very protective,” Clark explained to Country Aircheck.
“No matter how much talking I did trying to get it cleared, it was a corporate wall.”

Clark suggested Church make a last-ditch attempt by appealing to fellow musicians Rosanne Cash and John Carter Cash – two of Johnny’s five kids, and the personal touch worked.
“I’m never going to share that letter, but it’s the reason that performance aired,” Clark said. “(Church’s) passion about what he wanted to say and why allowed them (Cash’s children) to entrust him with their father’s legacy.”
The producer added, “Part of my job is to bring these things (performance ideas) to life, but this was Eric’s vision. He pushed it over the top, and boy, did he deliver.”
At the 55th Annual ACM Awards, which took place on September 16, Church kicked off his performance by strumming on a dark stage. Footage of Cash reciting “Ragged Old Flag” later played on the screen behind him, while the “Desperate Man” belted out his own song as an image of the American flag waving behind him.

  • J Balvin and Bad Bunny Dominate 2020 Latin Grammy Nominations

    WENN

Balvin and Bunny lead the 2020 nominees with thirteen and nine nods respectively, joining the likes of Rosalia, Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, and Karol G on the list.
    Sep 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – J Balvin and Bad Bunny lead the nominees at the 2020 Latin Grammy Awards with 13 and nine nominations.
Both stars are nominated twice in the prestigious Album of the Year category – for their solo LPs “Colores” and “YHLQMDLG”, respectively, along with the collaborative record “Oasis”.
Balvin will also compete against himself for Record of the Year for “Rojo” and “China”, also starring Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, and Ozuna – who comes in third with eight nods.
The nominations show a clear shift from the 2019 prizegiving, which saw organisers criticised for sidelining reggaeton and Latin trap stars in favour of established acts making more traditional Spanish-language pop. Balvin skipped last year’s ceremony in protest.

In a statement, Latin Recording Academy President and CEO Gabriel Abaroa, Jr. said, “Over the last year, we continued engaging in discussions with our members to improve the awards process and actively encouraged diverse Latin music creators to join and participate.”
Anuel AA, singer Karol G who’s up for record of the year and song of the year with “Tusa”, her duet with Nicki Minaj, producers Sky and Tainy who work closely in the studio with Balvin and Bad Bunny, and reggaeton pioneer Daddy Yankee also land nominations.
Meanwhile, Rosalia, whose “El Mal Querer” was named album of the year at the 2019 Latin Grammys, has four nominations this time, including Urban Fusion Performance and Urban Song for her and Ozuna’s “Yo X Ti, Tu X Mi”.
Winners will be announced during a televised ceremony which will be “anchored” in Miami on 19 November (20), according to the Academy’s statement. Performances will take place from multiple cities around the world.

  • Julianne Hough Hopes to Bring Light and Fun to the World Through 'Transform' Music Video

Reflecting on the inspiration behind her song and its new promo, the estranged wife of Brooks Laich openly admits that 2020 has been ‘the most challenging period’ of her life.
    Sep 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Julianne Hough has labelled 2020 the “most challenging period of (her) life”, amid her split from husband Brooks Laich and the coronavirus pandemic.
The 32-year-old singer and dancer dropped the music video for her song “Transform” on Sunday, September 27, and told her Instagram followers what inspired the tune, which she originally dropped a year ago, and the accompanying video – directed by her brother Derek Hough.
In the lengthy post, Julianne didn’t refer directly to her marriage split, but hinted at a lot of upheaval in her life over the past 12 months.
“One year ago, I released my song Transform and created this music video,” she began. “I wrote this song during a highly transformative time in my life, when I was delayering all my personal, social, and religious conditioning – finding compassion and empathy for ALL parts of me, not just the ‘good’ parts.”

While she was supposed to release the video earlier, the “most tragic loss of my life abruptly occurred” – which many fans took to be referring to the tragic deaths of her two dogs Lexi and Harley in December 2019.
“Personally, this past year has been the most challenging period of my life,” she continued. “Collectively, we are experiencing a global pandemic, extreme injustice, polarisation, environmental devastation, and an economic downturn that has contributed to increasing anxiety, depression and fear amongst us. This year has not been easy for anyone and this song rings even more true today than a year ago when I wrote it.”
Julianne added she is hoping the release of her music video encourages people to see the “courage and resilience that we innately have within us”
“I’m excited to share this video with all of you, a year later, to hopefully bring some light, colour, and FUN to the world right now,” she concluded.
Her remarks come as sources close to Julianne told People she and Brooks are “working on their marriage”, and “a reconciliation is looking more and more likely.”

  • Queen Latifah Raves Over Country Music for Its Crossover With Hip Hop

    WENN/Avalon

During an appearance on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’, the hip-hop pioneer-turned-actress admits she actually planned to attend the 2019 Country Music Association Awards.
    Sep 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Rap veteran Queen Latifah has become such a big fan of country music, she considered attending one of the industry’s biggest awards shows last year (19).
The hip-hop pioneer-turned-actress reveals she’s always been partial to a good country jam, particularly the Charlie Daniels Band classic “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”.
“That was really kinda a rap record, if you think about it – a country-rap record! I was like, ‘Wait a minute, this is dope!’ ” she smiled on America’s “The Kelly Clarkson Show”.
And Latifah is really enjoying the cross-genre hits popularized by modern country artists.

“I heard something from Florida Georgia Line the other day…,” she recalled, without remembering the name of the track. “The pocket of the song felt very hip-hop, but the song was very country, so I was like, I love the combination of it.”
“I love that country music is really leaning into so many other genres now. It’s pulling from a little hip-hop, it’s pulling from a little R&B – well, it’s always got like, blues under it too, but I like (that) it’s pulling from the hip-hop… You starting to hear some of that in the songs, that you didn’t really hear before (sic).”

Latifah was even keen to mingle with the genre’s top talents at the 2019 Country Music Association Awards, although she was unable to make it to Nashville, Tennessee to attend the ceremony in the end.
“I actually was gonna go to the Country Music (Association) Awards, the last one, because I really just love some of those performances, and they’re fun to me,” she said, naming Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan and show host Kelly Clarkson among her favorite country artists.

  • Artist of the Week: NBA YoungBoy

The ‘Kacey Talk’ rapper makes a return to No. 1 with his second studio album ‘Top’, less than a year after ruling Billboard charts with his last three mixtapes.
    Sep 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – NBA YoungBoy is on a winning streak. After dominating the charts since last October with three mixtapes, the 20-year-old rapper is now ruling with his second full-length studio album. Boldly titled “Top”, it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
In the lead single called “All In”, he embraces his vulnerable side as he reflects on his difficult childhood, growing up without his father. “Payin’ for my daddy to come home, pray he get a appeal,” he raps. “Hope he come take me away, keep me from off of these pills.”
Meanwhile, in the second single “Kacey Talk”, he enlists his young son Kacey for ad-libs while he spits verses about a backstabbing “jealous young n***a” and brags about his million-dollar fortune.

      See also…

The album marked YoungBoy’s third number-one album overall and his second chart topper in 2020, following the release of mixtapes “AI YoungBoy 2” (October 2019) and “38 Baby 2” (April this year). Both the street albums also hit the pinnacle on U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
The release was not without a controversy. When the cover art came out, he was accused of copying fellow young star Roddy Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial” artwork. While “The Box” hitmaker declared there would always be “only ONE roddy,” he dismissed the rumored feud, “I been fucced wit dude so don’t make it about him… I’m just tired of all this comparing s**t.”
The album might seem to be rushed as it’s released only months after his previous release, but YoungBoy was actually quite reluctant to drop new music due to a friction with his label. He asked for his masters in exchange for four new album, but his label refused. “I’ll never release a song/album again until I’m in a better situation,” he initially said.
