  • Artist of the Week: Teyana Taylor

The ‘We Got Love’ singer is celebrating her people, culture, career and family while soaring high on the Billboard albums charts with her third studio album.
    Jul 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Teyana Taylor is undoubtedly one of the striking talents in today’s music industry. She first grabbed attention at 15 as Beyonce Knowles’ choreographer and, 14 years later, the G.O.O.D Music artist grows to become an imposing new figure in the game.
The brunette beauty placed all her three albums at the top 3 on Billboard Hot R&B chart with her latest record “The Album” peaking at No. 1. It also marked her highest-charting album on Billboard Hot 200, bowing at No. 8 with 32,000 equivalent album units earned.
She released her third effort on Juneteenth as a celebration of her people and career. “I personally felt like it was only right,” she explained, “because it’s a celebration for my culture and my people, to show that no matter what we go through, we always pull through.”
The 29-year-old singer/songwriter cried her heart out in one of the ballad anthems called “Still” featuring her little daughter Junie. “It took me maybe a couple of days to record ‘Still’ alone,” she revealed before adding, “This is me. This is my truth.”
She went through every emotion and it was reflected not only in her music but also videos. She celebrated one of the greatest black music icons Michael Jackson in “Bare Wit Me”, paid homage to younger generation in “Made It”, and shared her family joy as she announced her pregnancy in “Wake Up Love”.
The album has a total of 23 songs which gave her an ample opportunity to explore her creativity without restrain, something that she didn’t enjoy in her previous album. “When people hear the album, they will understand what my frustration was with K.T.S.E.,” she says. “Trying to put a lot of emotions through seven songs is tough. So now to have a full album, 23 songs, you get to literally express yourself and every single part of you.”

  • Janelle Monae Calls Out Misogyny in Rap Industry: 'Women Didn't Create Misogny, Y'all Did'

    WENN

The ‘Hidden Figures’ actress also notes that misogyny doesn’t only happen in entertainment as it occurs in ‘boardrooms, the WH, households, corporate spaces, army’ and church.
    Jul 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Singer Janelle Monae has had enough with misogyny in rap music. The musician, who has been known as an advocate of equal rights, recently took to her social media account to rant about the amount of misogyny in rap music which she said was “infuriating.”
“Women (black women inparticular) have been betrayed by the majority of men for far too long . The systems that enable Patriarchy and abusers of power are burning . Either bring gasoline or burn with them,” she began her Twitter tirade on Friday, July 3.
The “Make Me Feel” songstress noted that people “can’t wait to call women every b***h , h** , discuss violent acts against women, etc for clout in rap, rock, and through out music history.” She added, “Misogny has NEVER been okay yet it has become normalized. Women didn’t create misogny, y’all did. SO YOU DO THE WORK to ABOLISH IT.”
The “Hidden Figures” actress then shared that misogyny doesn’t only happen in entertainment as it occurs in “boardrooms, the WH, households, corporate spaces, army, church, let’s us all know ya’ll do not care about women on a human to human level and you never have. If you did it would have been ABOLISHED centuries ago. You had time.”
Concluding her rant, Janelle wrote to her followers, “A lot of my musical heroes and peers’ Work are problematic in many ways . And I just might be a problematic hero to someone.”

Janelle Monae ranted about misogyny in entertainment.
This arrives after she opened up about how “triggering” it was to film her upcoming horror film “Antebellum”. Talking about her role, which is an author who is transported back in time to a reality in which she is an enslaved person, Janelle said, “Oh, I brought all of my ancestors home with me. We were filming most of the stuff at night on a plantation, and I felt everything. There were just certain conversations even at craft services that if I heard would be triggering for me.”
“This is a project that is so of the times, and it was not going to be a yes for me because I knew the responsibility and the weight of it and I knew what this character was going to have to go through physically and emotionally,” she went on to add during the Hollywood Reporter Drama Actress Roundtable.

  • DaBaby Called Out for Ignoring Social Distancing Measures at Independence Day Concert

    Instagram

The ‘Bob’ hitmaker and his promoters are facing criticisms after pictures show people at his Fourth of July with no masks while crowding together at the venue.
    Jul 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Rapper DaBaby and organisers behind his packed Saturday night (04Jul20) concert in Georgia have come under fire on social media for failing to implement social distancing measures.
The “Suge” star ignored coronavirus concerns and pressed ahead with his Fourth of July celebration at the Cosmopolitan Premier Lounge in Decatur even though positive tests across the state have spiked in recent days.
Prior to the gig, promoter MyDJDre told TMZ the venue would only be at 40 per cent capacity to allow for attendees to socially distance while inside the club, which has room for 4,000 people while fans would also be turned away at the door if they failed to wear a mask or refused to have their temperature checked upon entry.
However, photos and video footage from the show have since emerged online, showing partygoers crowded together without masks.
DaBaby was also supposed to be limited to having a three-person entourage with him during his performance, but he appeared to bring a host of others up on the platform too, all standing along the back of the stage.
After the footage began circulating on social media, many concerned users shared their disapproval at the apparent lack of concern for public safety.
Responding to the club’s DJ, who boasted about DaBaby’s gig attracting “the whole city” in an Instagram post, one person remarked, “I wouldn’t be bragging that ‘the whole city came out’ in the middle of a pandemic.”
“This is so irresponsible. You should be ashamed,” read another comment.
And a devotee declared: “I absolutely love Dababy and his music but this is such an awful idea. Risking thousands of lives for a silly a** concert is so foolish. Cancel this ridiculousness.”
DaBaby and MyDJDre have yet to respond to the latest backlash.

  • John Legend Loves 'Verzuz' for Teaching People About Black Music and Culture

    Instagram

The ‘All of Me’ hitmaker is inspired by the online music battle launched by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland for educating people on the history of black music and culture.
    Jul 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – John Legend is honoured to have made history by appearing on online music battle show “Verzuz” with Alicia Keys for Juneteenth (19Jun20).
The singer took part in the singing showdown on the U.S. cultural holiday, which celebrates the emancipation of African-American slaves, as part of the popular Instagram Live show launched by Alicia’s husband Swizz Beatz and Timbaland in March to bring hip hop and R&B artists from the past and present together.
Detailing his experience with the show during an Apple Music interview on Thursday (02Jul20), the “Glory” singer gushed, “What I love about them (Verzuz episodes) is they’ve really been teaching people about the history of our culture and the music, knowing particularly because so many producers and writers have been a part of it, not just front artists, lead artists, but people who have been behind the scenes, making tracks for people for years. It’s good to see their whole body of work all in one setting, and give them the credit and the flowers that they’re due, for the great work that they’ve done.”
John is inspired to see music producers new and old, like the legendary Babyface, be featured in “Verzuz” competitions.
“When you see someone like Babyface, who was behind so many great, great songs, not just the ones that he fronted, but the ones he wrote for Whitney (Houston) or Toni (Braxton), or so many other artists, Boyz II Men, seeing him get his due respect and honour because of the great work he’s done, it’s just been great for the culture,” he said. “And it’s been entertaining. Even when things go wrong, it’s been entertaining. It’s just that good.”
Previous Verzuz sessions have featured artists like 112 and Jagged Edge, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, Nelly and Ludacris, and Fabolous and Jadakiss.

The ‘Thor’ actor is raising money with his new song called ‘One Fine Day’ to support a nonprofit organization struggling during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
    Jul 5, 2020
AceShowbiz – Idris Elba has released a single to raise funds for Britain’s Black Cultural Archives (BCA) institution.
The actor and DJ has teamed up with south London rapper Tiggs Da Author and electro-pop producers The Knocks for the track, “One Fine Day”.
All of the “Thor” star’s royalties from the song will go to the Brixton-based BCA, which houses an archive and museum celebrating the history of people of African and Caribbean descent living in the U.K.
Unveiling the dance anthem on Friday (03Jul20), Idris, who is a patron of the BCA, tells WENN, “This song is the ultimate victory song at a time when no one wins unless we all win together.”
Released via Idris’ London based label 7Wallace, “One Fine Day” is a high-octane house track, featuring the star and Tiggs on vocals, which emphasises the Swahili word, “tutafika,” meaning, “we will make it.”

The BCA has been closed to visitors since March (20), when the U.K. entered its Covid-19 lockdown, and is seeking donations in order to continue its work documenting the history of black Britons while its doors are shuttered.
A spokesperson for the organisation tells WENN they are “delighted” with Idris’ new track, and that it will allow them to step up their education programmes and to record the recent Black Lives Matter protests for future generations.
“We have a new call out to document the current Black Lives Matter activism,” they explain. “Idris’ support will mean that we can collect and share this history in the making.”
