  • Beyonce Accused of Capitalizing on African Culture With 'Black Is King' Trailer

    Instagram

After the ‘Lemonade’ singer debuts a trailer for her upcoming visual album, people are debating online whether it’s appropriate or not for her to use the African culture to promote her new material.
    Jun 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – Beyonce Knowles may have a large number of Beyhives who will always have her back, but that doesn’t mean she won’t face criticism. The R&B diva has landed in hot water after she debuted a trailer for her new visual album “Black Is King”.
The video in question features scenes of people donning traditional African costumes and performing some traditional dances, intercepted with footage of Beyonce performing and also some rare looks at her private moments with her family. People have since debated whether it’s appropriate or not for her to use the African culture to promote her new material.
“She needs to read the room,” one person, who objects to the video, reacted in an online forum. “Focus on the s**t that’s going on in the country she was born in, romanticizing Africa isn’t what we need right now girl.” Another agreed, “Seriously, I’m glad people have caught on to this because it has always bothered me how people appropriate ‘African cultures’.”
Believing that the 38-year-old singer is wrong, a third person commented, “I’ve been saying all this will eventually backfire on her. It’s clear she’s out here pandering and riding a wave. People would eventually catch on. Its becoming performative at this point.” Another echoed the sentiment, “It’s a bad look, especially when you want to bite off the culture.”
Someone else doubted that Beyonce’s support of African people and African culture is genuine, noting, “Claim to love Africa but they stay spending the summer in Europe etc… From Senegal to the Seychelles plenty of beautiful places to visit. But since white people prefer the Hamptons, the South of France and Capri that’s where you will mostly find the Carters.”
There were a few, however, who still defended Bey. “People are so sensitive,” one person said of the critics. “This is one of the rare moments where africa is being shown in a positive light that’s not just egypt or morocco. Beyonce was clearly showing the variety of african cultures not homogenizing them! They shouldn’t accuse her of being ignorant just because they cant tell the difference.”
Another doesn’t see anything wrong with using African culture to sell music. “Honestly, I do not know why people are writing think pieces about this. Beyonce is just trying to sell her music that’s it,” the said person argued. “I see it for what it is a promotional and marketing tactic to push her music, just like Childish Gambino [a.k.a. Donald Glover] did with Guava Island.”
Beyonce has not responded to the backlash. In a description of the upcoming visual album to be released on July 31, Disney+ said that ” ‘Black Is King’ is a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience.” The network’s bosses added in a statement, “The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future.”

Richard died at 87 in Nashville in May. Little Richard passed away this morning from bone cancer in Nashville. “He was living with his brother in Nashville,” his longtime agent said. “He was battling for a good while, many years. I last spoke to him about two or three weeks ago. I knew he wasn’t well but he never really got into it, he just would say ‘I’m not well.’ He’s been suffering for many years with various aches and pains. He just wouldn’t talk about it much.”

Just outside the top five, pregnant Teyana Taylor lands her first top 10 record as “The Album” bows at number eight.

    Jun 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Bjork has announced a trio of live shows in August, in Reykjavik, Iceland, to honor those who were “hit hardest in the coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter movement (sic).”
The star’s native country is in the process of reintroducing live concerts, and the “It’s Oh So Quiet” singer is planning to stage the shows with a conventional audience, as well as livestreaming the gigs to raise money for domestic women’s charities in both Iceland and worldwide.
“I would like to invite you to some concerts to honor folks who got hit hardest in the coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter movement and to honor how many Icelandic musicians I have worked with through the years,” Bjork said in a statement, reported Rolling Stone.
“We are going to celebrate that we are all healthily exiting quarantine together by playing concerts in Harpa Music Hall for 3 weekends of August.”
The matinee concerts – dubbed Bjork Orkestral and set for 9, 15, and 23 August – “will be ‘unplugged’ or acoustic and performed without beats and electronics.”
“I feel we are going through extraordinary times horrifying but also an opportunity to truly change it is demanded of us that we finally confront all racism that we learn that lives are more important that profit and look inside us and finecomb out all our hidden prejudices and privileges (sic),” the singer added.

  • Artist of the Week: Lil Mosey

The 18-year-old Seattle-bred rapper solidifies himself as a ‘Certified Hitmaker’ with second studio album which spawned a chart-topping single called ‘Blueberry Faygo’.
    Jun 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lil Mosey has become one of the youngest platinum-selling artists in the hip-hop scene right now. He made a wave with his first mixtape at 15 and, by the age of 16, scored his double-platinum single fittingly titled “Noticed” while his debut album “Northsbest” was certified gold.
“Noticed” is bouncy and easy on the ear, showcasing his rapping/singing hybrid with Auto-Tune. It was named one of the hip-hop singles to watch by Forbes. It has since racked up nearly 200 million YouTube views, over 350 million Spotify plays, and more than 60 million SoundCloud streams.
The baby-faced rapper soon got his very own Northsbest festival in hometown of Seattle, landed a spot on the coveted XXL Freshman Class along with the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, and YK Osiris in 2019, and earned co-sign from Ice Cube and Chris Brown.
But it’s not enough for him and he’s not shy to let people know of his big aspirations. “I want the top spot. I want to be number one. I need my whole album to go platinum and I need some more plaques too. I’m really trying to go crazy,” the rapper, now 18, said in an interview.
He boldly declared his second studio album a “Certified Hitmaker”. It peaked at No. 12 on Billboard Hot 200 and spawned a hit single “Blueberry Faygo” which reached No. 11 on Billboard Hot 100, topped the Rhythmic Songs airplay chart, and climbed up to No. 16 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart.
While his catchy music appealed to young generation and TikTok demographic, some people criticized his sound. He was, however, unbothered. “I’m using this sound to show people that this is the wave,” he said. “I feel like I’m definitely a melodic artist. I try to use a lot of rap elements but my main thing is melodies. I feel like what really brings them in is the melody of the song. They don’t even need to know what I’m saying it’ll just be replaying in their head multiple times.”

AceShowbiz – Country singer Chase Rice’s return to the road after the coronavirus lockdown has sparked health and safety concerns after fans packed a Tennessee venue on Saturday night (June 27) to see him perform live.
The “Eyes on You” singer even led a sing-along at the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, where 4,000 fans gathered and ignored social distancing guidelines even though COVID-19 is spiking in the state.
Chase filmed the fans singing along and posted the footage online, receiving a backlash from many who caught the video, with one commenter stating: “So concerts are allowed and no masks needed. What a great idea amidst covid19 on the rise. All over insta (Instagram). Chase rice might have just provoked a healthy covid19 wave in a couple of weeks.”

A fan critiziced Chase Rice for ignoring social distancing guidelines a his packed concert.
Another asked: “So will Chase Rice be held responsible for the spike of cases in TN in the next week after the jam-packed concert he had last night with no social distancing rules enforced?”.

The singer is further dragged for his packed concert.
Rice has yet to comment on the gig or the fact he may have put fans at risk, but his summer tour continues this week (July 03) in Ashland, Kentucky. He also has a handful of drive-in concerts coming up later this summer, where fans can watch him from the comfort and safety of their cars.
