  • Alicia Keys Tackles Racial Injustice in New Song 'Perfect Way to Die'

In the wake of Black Lives Matter protests, the ‘No One’ hitmaker marks the Juneteenth with the release of an emotional ballad about a mother who’s lost her son to police violence.
    Jun 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Alicia Keys has addressed the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests in her new single “A Perfect Way to Die”.
The track, which was released on Friday, June 19, 2020, which is also Juneteenth – when the Emancipation Proclamation was read to Texan slaves on June 19, 1865, after the South lost the U.S. Civil War – features the star unleashing her feelings about police brutality.
“I have felt called by music like I have never felt before,” Keys wrote in an Instagram caption debuting the song. “I have been following its lead. It has led me to the song A Perfect Way to Die. The song title is so powerful and heartbreaking because WE are heartbroken by so many who have died unjustly.”

The emotional song is written from the perspective of a mother who’s lost her son to police violence and comes weeks after the death of African-American man George Floyd, which sparked protests against police brutality worldwide.
“Of course, there is NO perfect way to die,” Keys continued. “That phrase doesn’t even make sense. Just like it doesn’t make sense that there are so many innocent lives that should not have been taken from us due to the destructive culture of police violence.”
Following the release, the singer will face off against John Legend as part of Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s latest “Verzus” battle. Tune in at 5 P.M. ET on John and Alicia’s Instagram pages.

  • Noname Claps Back at J. Cole on 'Song 33': 'You Thought to Write About Me?'

    Instagram/WENN

Noname’s response earns mixed reactions from fans as one praises the Chicago rapper for the new song while someone else dubs the clapback ‘so unnecessary.’
    Jun 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Noname has publicly responded to J. Cole’s shade on his controversial song “Snow on Tha Bluff”. On Thursday, June 18, the Chicago took to her Twitter account to address the drama with her own song called “Song 33”, in which she also highlights social issues that are happening in the recent weeks.
Seemingly taking a jab at J. Cole, Noname raps in the one-minute and nine-seconds track, “He really bout to write about me/ When the world is in smokes?” She continues, “When it’s people in trees?/ When George begging for his mother saying he couldn’t breathe/ You thought to write about me?”

Noname responded to J. Cole with new song ‘Song 33′.
“Little did I know all my reading would be a bother/ It’s trans women being murdered and this is all he can offer?/ And this is what y’all receive?” she goes on rapping in the song, in which she touched on the recent murder of 19-year-old activist Oluwatoyin Salau.

She also highlighted recent social issues in the song.
Her response earned mixed reactions from fans. Praising Noname, a fan wrote in the replies, “This is how you criticize someone without attacking or disrespecting them.”
However, some others slammed Noname for the response which someone dubbed “so unnecessary.” The naysayer added, “It says a lot about maturity when you get pressurized by society to respond, but the n***a @JColeNC was legit being sincerely honest. I like you but this is crazy, especially from you. You are a woke person, dreaming right now.”
Criticizing Noname, another person wrote, “Yet you’re doing the same with all this going on. Why not have a actual conversation with him and speak to him about? Why make it bigger than it is?” Another comment read, “you didn’t even addressed his praise or understood what he said to you. your ego blinded you. i thought you were more focused & smart than this. take your 15 of clout, that apparently that’s your agenda.”
A fan, meanwhile, thought it would be a great thing if Noname and J. Cole put their differences aside and do a collaboration. “Shaq and Kobe had their differences, but when it came time to win the ring, they were unstopabble. With that said, it’d be dope to see a @noname and @JColeNC collab. They’re both on the same team, just debating over whose approach is more effective,” the person noted.
The beef between J. Cole and Noname started after the former criticized Noname on his song for recently calling out her peers over their social media silence following the death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer in Minnesota last month, May 2020.
“She mad at the celebrities, low key I be thinkin’ she talking bout me,” he raps, later adding, “But s**t, it’s something about the queen tone that’s botherin’ me.” Cole goes on to claim he isn’t educated enough to be as outspoken about the Black Lives Matter campaign as some think he should be, and suggests those wanting to share their knowledge “treat people like children” so they can better understand.
The lyrics sparked a backlash online, but he returned to Twitter on Wednesday to defend his track – while also addressing speculation his verses were about Noname. “I stand behind every word of the song that dropped last night,” he declared. “Right or wrong I can’t say, but I can say it was honest. Some assume to know who the song is about. That’s fine with me, it’s not my job to tell anybody what to think or feel about the work. I accept all conversation and criticisms.”

  • Katy Perry Delivers Electric Performances at Democracy Summer 2020 Concert

    Instagram

Co-hosted by Logan Browning and Rosario Dawson, the Rock the Vote virtual event also features performances by Black Eyed Peas and an appearance by Senator Cory Booker among others.
    Jun 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Katy Perry is using her powerful voice to encourage young Americans to register to vote for the upcoming November 2020 election. On Thursday, June 18, the “American Idol” judge co-headlined Rock The Vote’s “Democracy Summer 2020” virtual concert, and delivered three electric performances.
Standing in front of the words, “Vote for the change you want to see,” the 35-year-old first performed her new single, “Daisies”. She wore an American flag-themed dress for the appearance, and completed her look with a star tiara. Accompanied only by a pianist and a guitarist, she went on to sing two of her hit numbers, “Chained to the Rhythm” and “Roar”.
Days prior to her performance, Perry expressed her excitement to be “a part of this kickoff.” In a released statement, she said, “The young people of America are speaking loud and clear on the streets and online, and come November, it will be more important than ever to fight for justice and equality, and against systemic racism, with our ballots.”
The Democracy Summer 2020 concert was hosted by Rosario Dawson and Logan Browning. Aside from Perry, it also featured performances by Black Eyed Peas, Ne-Yo, Saweetie and Leslie Grace among others. The hip-hop group led by will.i.am, in particular, delivered two of their hits, “Mamacita” and “Where Is the Love?”.
About their participation on the concert, BEP previously stated, “We’ve been riding with Rock The Vote for a long time. Now more than ever, voting is key for long-term change. The youth vote is going to decide the future of America. It’s not just our duty, but our honor to spread the word in an election year. Get out there and let’s make history together!”
Among those declaring call to action were Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Cory Booker and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro. Booker made his appearance a short while after Perry delivered her medley.
“Whether it is dealing with justice in policing; dealing with true ideals of public safety, which are not about law enforcement, it’s about investing in people, investing in mental healthcare, investing in drug addiction, investing in education … all of these things are on the ballot,” he reminded. “This is, indeed, the most important election of our lifetime.”

This special live stream kick-off event was presented by a coalition led by Rock the Vote, Voto Latino Foundation, When We All Vote and March For Our Lives. It is aiming to get the registering of 200,000 new voters over the summer. In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, it will also raise funds for Black-led organizations, including the Community Justice Action Fund and the National Action Network.

The annual event, which benefits the Sunrise House homeless youth shelter in Grande Prairie, Alberta, will stream online four days after Townes releases her new album ‘The Lemonade Stand’.
    Jun 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Singer/songwriter Tenille Townes has recruited an A-list line-up for her first virtual Big Hearts for Big Kids fundraiser, featuring Dierks Bentley and Chrissy Metz.
The annual event, which benefits the Sunrise House homeless youth shelter in Tenille’s native Grande Prairie, Alberta, has been getting bigger each year, but the singer had to shut down a physical 2020 event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Instead, the event will stream online four days after Townes releases her new album, “The Lemonade Stand”, on 26 June.
She will host and perform her portion of the virtual show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, while guests like Bentley, Metz, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Andy Grammer and Ashley McBryde will offer up at-home sets.
The concert will be streamed from 8 P.M. ET on 30 June via Townes’ Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/tenilletownes/) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/tenilletownes/?hl=en) pages.
Revealing the poster for the fundraiser on Instagram, she writes, “I really can not get over the names on this poster, and am so honoured to have these heroes and friends be a part of a night of amazing music, all hosted from the mother church, the Ryman Auditorium.”
“Big Hearts started 10 years ago in my hometown, when I heard that our youth shelter needed funding to stay open. I have been blown away by the power of music and what happens when a group of people come together. I’m thrilled to bring this event to everybody’s living rooms this year, and have the very first Big Hearts For Big Kids: Live From Nashville!!”
“In light of all that’s going on in the world right now, wrapping our arms (virtually) around the kids who need us out there, feels more important than ever. I can’t wait!!!”

Proceeds from Big Hearts for Big Kids will again benefit Sunrise House, as well as Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee’s Troop 6000, which supports girls without permanent housing. Townes recorded a version of “Somebody’s Daughter” with the troop last year (19).

  • H.E.R. Calls Upon Artists to Create Music That Pushes Change Over Racial Injustice

    Instagram

The ‘Slide’ singer will release her new single, ‘I Can’t Breathe’, on Juneteenth, a Texas state holiday celebrating the time the Emancipation Proclamation was read to Texan slaves in 1865.
    Jun 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – R&B star H.E.R. has called on artists worldwide to channel their energy into the ongoing social justice movements and create work that reflects the activism.
Ahead of the release of her new single “I Can’t Breathe” on Friday (June 19) – which comes in the wake of the death of African-American man George Floyd at the hands of cops – the star told TMZ she felt a “responsibility” to address the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement in her music.
Opening up on the single, the star, real name Gabriella Wilson, explained, “It’s honestly a conversation with me and with myself, and also with people like, ‘Why’s there so much hate?’ It’s really unfortunate that we’re going through this.”
“My favourite line in the song is, ‘How do we cope when we don’t love each other?’ ” she continued. “That’s just so real and I think we’re all questioning that right now. We all have these questions and we all have these things that we want to change, and that’s really what the song is.”
The hitmaker went on to call on her musical peers to create songs that advocate change, insisting, “I think every artist has a responsibility to talk about what’s going on right now, and that’s really what I wanted to do.”
“Music is a lot of things. It can help you heal, and it can help you learn,” she shared. “I think if you put everything aside and use your gifts to express that emotion that you feel, you’re helping the cause and you’re helping that change.”
“I’ve talked to a lot of artists and we’ve all been struggling with so much of that pain and so much of that anxiety and kind of not knowing how to even put the words together but sometimes you just have to sit down and let it flow and speak from your heart.”

The release of “I Can’t Breathe” also coincides with Juneteenth – when the Emancipation Proclamation was read to Texan slaves on June 19, 1865, after the South lost the U.S. Civil War.

  • Cardi B Uses Twitter's Voice Note for Sam Smith Remix as Nicki Minaj Seeks Credit for New Feature

    WENN

The ‘Bodak Yellow’ femcee pranks her Twitter followers with a fake remix while her rival credits herself for the newly-minted voice note launched by Twitter.
    Jun 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Rapper Cardi B fooled fans on Thursday, June 18, 2020 by pretending to have recorded an official remix to Sam Smith’s hit song “How Do You Sleep?”.
The “I Like It” hitmaker decided to have a little fun with Twitter’s new voice notes function, which allows users to record up to 140 seconds of audio to post online and shared a clip of Smith’s music video with her 12.5 million followers.
She sent some fans into overdrive as she captioned it, “Remix is out now” – until they realised the cheeky MC had just dubbed her voice over the Brit’s as she sang along to the tune.
Meanwhile, Cardi’s rap rival, Nicki Minaj, is seeking credit for the audio tweet function from Twitter bosses, after proposing the idea three years ago.
She shared an Instagram image of a message from 2017 when she wrote, “If Twitter came out with a way for me to voice note my tweets they’d be winning. Give me my money tho. Give me my money (sic).”
Calling on fans to urge platform bosses to reward her for the idea, which was rolled out this week, she captioned the old tweet, “Can y’all go on Twitter & tell them give me my money for this new voice note feature I told them to add in 2017 (sic)?”
Twitter officials have yet to respond to Nicki’s gripe.

  • Dixie Chicks Faces Criticisms as Moniker Is Associated With Slavery

    WENN

The all-female country music trio is urged to follow in Lady Antebellum’s footsteps and change their moniker due to connotations with the oppression of black people.
    Jun 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – A top U.S. journalist has urged the Dixie Chicks to follow Lady Antebellum’s example and change their name, insisting it’s “the epitome of white America.”
The trio famously raised eyebrows for criticising former U.S. leader George W. Bush’s war policies, and now the “Goodbye Earl” hitmakers are under fire again – from writer Jeremy Helligar.
In a new Variety column, he argues the band should rethink its name, explaining, “Regardless of its origin, for many Black people, it conjures a time and a place of bondage.”
“Dixie, for the record, is the epitome of white America, a celebration of a Southern tradition that is indivisible from Black slaves and those grand plantations where they were forced to toil for free.
“The origin of the word, though, is unclear. One theory links it to Jeremiah Dixon, who along with Charles Mason, drew the Mason-Dixon line as the border between four states that later became the unofficial separation between free states and slave states. Other less likely theories trace it back to a slave owner from Manhattan as well as ‘dix’, a word written on Louisiana’s 10-dollar bills pre-Civil War that’s French for ‘ten.’ ”
Helligar, a former editor for People, Teen People, Us Weekly, and Entertainment Weekly, adds times have “changed dramatically,” adding, “It’s hard to imagine many Black Southerners today tying their appreciation of their homeland to ‘Dixie’, even if, according to legend, it’s the title of one of Abraham Lincoln’s favourite songs (one, incidentally, in which the author longs to be in ‘the land of cotton’ because ‘old times there are not forgotten’).”
The writer’s piece comes after another country trio, Lady Antebellum, announced they had changed their name to Lady A in an effort to distance themselves from ‘Antebellum’, a term with ties to slavery.
