    The Weeknd Makes Hot 100 History by Staying at Top 10 for a Year With 'Blinding Lights'

    Having been the Billboard chart’s biggest hit of 2020, the second single off the Canadian singer’s ‘After Hours’ lands behind Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ and Cardi B’s ‘Up’.

    AceShowbiz – The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” has become the first hit to spend a year in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10. As Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” leads the U.S. countdown for an eighth week, the Canadian pop star is stealing all the headlines at number three by chalking up 52 weeks in the top flight.
    “Blinding Lights”, which was the Hot 100’s biggest hit of 2020, hit the top 10 in February, 2020, spent four weeks at number one in April and May, and has stayed in the top 10 ever since, bar two weeks in December when the track dipped to numbers 11 and 18.
    The Weeknd now has 13 more weeks in the top 10 with one hit than Post Malone, who notched up 39 weeks with “Circles” in 2019 and 2020. It has also extended its top five run to 43 weeks – 16 more than its nearest rival.

    Meanwhile, Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” becomes one of only seven tracks to spend its first eight weeks on the chart at the top after debuting at number one in January.
    Cardi B’s “Up” stays put at two on the new countdown, while Ariana Grande’s “34+35” and Chris Brown and Young Thug’s “Go Crazy” complete the new top five.

    Despite “Blinding Lights” success on music chart, The Weeknd failed to secure a single nomination at the 2021 Grammy Awards. In response to the snub, he told Billboard magazine, “If you were like, ‘Do you think the Grammys are racist?’ I think the only real answer is that in the last 61 years of the GRAMMYs, only 10 Black artists have won album of the year. I don’t want to make this about me. That’s just a fact.”

    AceShowbiz – Mary Wilson’s expanded version of her self-titled solo album is set to be posthumously released digitally.
    The Supremes co-founder – who remained a member of the legendary Motown group for 18 years until their split in 1977 – sadly passed away last month (February 2021) at her home in Las Vegas.
    And in celebration of what would have been the iconic singer’s 77th Birthday (March 6), “Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition” has been made available to pre-order.
    The LP was originally released on Motown in 1979 and Motown/UMe is honouring the legacy of the music legend with the release and further album projects she had planned.
    The collection includes eight bonus tracks, rare remixes and the new song, “Why Can’t We All Get Along”.
    What’s more, there are tracks intended to follow-up the album produced by studio wizard Gus Dudgeon.

    Just days before her death on February 8, Wilson revealed on YouTube she was working on new solo material.
    Her publicist Jay Schwartz confirmed the sad news of her passing from hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease at her home in Henderson, Nevada.
    And Motown Records founder Berry Gordy said in a statement, “I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of the Supremes.”
    “The Supremes were always known as the ‘sweethearts of Motown.’ Mary, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, came to Motown in the early 1960s.”
    “After an unprecedented string of No. 1 hits, television and nightclub bookings, they opened doors for themselves, the other Motown acts, and many, many others.”
    The legendary band – which was founded at The Primettes in 1959, when Wilson was just 15 years old – were known for their huge hits including “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “Stop! In the Name of Love”.
    She was part of the original lineup alongside Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Barbara Martin, who left before they became successful.

    AceShowbiz – A full performer lineup for the 2021 Grammy Awards has been unveiled. Taylor Swift, Cardi B and BTS (Bangtan Boys) are among those set to take the stage at the 63rd annual awards show, which is set to take place virtually on Sunday, March 14.
    Announcing the trio’s upcoming gigs was the Recording Academy on Sunday, March 7 via its official website and Instagram account. They will be joined by Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby as well as 2020 big winner Billie Eilish, who have each received four nods at this year’s event.
    Also scheduled to perform at the music’s big night was Bad Bunny, Black Pumas, Mickey Guyton, Brandi Carlile, and Doja Cat. Other musicians, such as Haim, Post Malone, Miranda Lambert, Lil Baby, Brittany Howard, Dua Lipa, Chris Martin, John Mayer, Maren Morris, Roddy Ricch and Harry Styles, will headline the show as well.

    Along with the Instagram announcement, the Recording Academy officials penned, “We just revealed the full lineup for the 2021 #GRAMMYs!” They added, “This year artists will be coming together, while still safely apart, to play music for each other as a community and celebrate the music that unites us all.”

    Hosted by Trevor Noah, the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live from 8 P.M. ET on March 14. Its pre-show ceremony will begin at 3 P.M. ET and hosted by R&B star Jhene Aiko. It was initially set to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 31 January, but COVID-19 concerns forced officials to put it on hold.
    This year’s ceremony will pay tribute to some independent music venues which were greatly impacted by the pandemic. Various awards will be presented by workers of The Troubadour and The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, New York’s The Apollo Theater and Nashville’s The Station Inn.

The set leads the Billboard 200 chart for eighth consecutive weeks, making it one of only six country albums that have spent at least eight weeks in total at No. 1. The album earns 82,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending March 4, according to MRC Data.
    Of the number, SEA units comprise 75,000. It equals to 103.33 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Album sales are 6,000 units while the rest are in the form of TEA units. “Dangerous” also reaches a new milestone this week as it ties with Taylor Swift’s 2020 album “Folklore” for the second-most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the last five years from all genres.
    Back to this week’s chart, The Weeknd’s compilation album “The Highlight” returns to the Top 10 as it ascends from No. 12 to No. 2 after earning 52,000 equivalent album units. Following it up is Pop Smoke’s former leader “Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon” that stays steady at No. 3 with 42,000 units.

    Pooh Shiesty’s “Shiesty Season” rises one spot from No. 5 to No. 4 with 36,000 album units earned. Meanwhile, Lil Durk’s “The Voice” descends from No. 4 to No. 5 after earning 36,000 units. Also dipping this week is Ariana Grande’s “Positions” that falls from No. 2 to No. 6 with 32,000 equivalent album units. As for Lil Baby’s “My Turn”, the album soars from No. 10 to No. 7 with 30,000 units.
    Staying at No. 8 is Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” with 29,000 units earned. Following it up is Luke Combs’ “What You See Is What You Get” that is a non-mover at No. 9 with 28,000 equivalent album units. Rounding out the Top 10 is Juice WRLD’s former chart-topper “Legends Never Die” that earns 27,000 units.

    AceShowbiz – Yung Bleu has been steadily climbing the chart since being signed to Boosie Badazz’s label. Following his breakout single “Miss It”, he reached a new high with his recent offering “You’re Mines Still” as the track broke into the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
    In it, the Alabama rapper continued to do what he did best, alternating between rap and R&B. A confession of a guy who refused to move on from a toxic relationship, the song caught Drake’s attention and the Canadian star quickly jumped on the remix version.
    While Drizzy was keen to add his verses to the song, the collaboration almost did not happen after Bleu missed the superstar’s call. “I was so mad. I really thought it was over. I ended up texting him the next day and talking about it. But he was mad cool. Drake is a real genuine dude. He really doesn’t care how big you are. If he f**ks with it, he f**ks with it,” Bleu told Complex.

    Taken from 26-year-old Bleu’s mini album “Love Scars: The 5 Stages of Emotions”, the track additionally peaked at No. 19 on Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 5 on Mediabase rhythmic and urban radio charts. It also climbed five spots to the eleventh position on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
    As he showed his potential as a hitmaker, he moved up the ranks among newbies in the rap game. He has been named 2021’s artist to watch by influential magazines like PEOPLE and Billboard. Following his collaboration with Drake, he also has been getting a lot of offers from big stars in the industry.
    The artist, who teamed up with the likes of Lil Durk, YFN Lucci, Wiz Khalifa, and Kevin Gates in the past, opened up, “My DMs have been so crazy that I haven’t even had a chance to go through all of them. But I do have big follow-up work after this though. After this song, there’s another with a big artist.”

    AceShowbiz – Rita Ora became one of the first A-listers to perform live for thousands since the COVID pandemic shut down the music world, when she performed at the 2021 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Australia on Saturday, March 6.
    The singer took to the stage at the Sydney Cricket Ground in front of 35,000 fans.
    Rita, who was already in Australia – working as a coach in the new season of TV talent show “The Voice”, came dressed to party in a plunging blue sequinned leotard, and played a medley of her hits, including “Let You Love Me” and “Bang Bang”.
    Speaking to the gathering crowd toward the end of her set, the “Anywhere” confessed, “I’m a little bit emotional.” She added, “This is my first show in a very, very long time so thank you.”

    Troye Sivan also made a splash during the Mardi Gras, as did singer Jack Vidgen.
    Hours after her performance, Ora thanked the Mardi Gras organizers for inviting her to headline the event, sharing a series of snaps via Instagram.
    “Thank you @sydneymardigras!!! It was an honor to perform at such an important event last night!” she captioned the shots. “I can’t put into words the love I have for the LGBTQIA+ community and last night will remain a special moment for me forever! Love you all.”

    While the event went on smoothly, Mardi Gras chief executive Albert Kruger revealed that it was almost canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. He went on to say, “This is actually better than any expectations we ever had.”

    AceShowbiz – Eminem has responded to social media campaign that sought for his cancellation over his controversial lyrics. No stranger to backlash since early of his rising career, instead of dropping a new freestyle or recording a new track, the Grammy Award-winning artist released a music video for his already existing song aptly titled “Tone Deaf”.
    Lifted off his 2020 album “Music to Be Murdered By”, the song reflects his defiant attitude to the cancel culture. “It’s okay not to like my s**t/ Everything’s fine, drink your wine, b***h/ And get offline, quit whinin’, this is just a rhyme, b***h,” he raps on the song.
    Em adds in the chorus, “I can’t understand a word you say (I’m tone-deaf)/ I think this way I prefer to stay (I’m tone-deaf).” He also tweeted, “I won’t stop even when my hair turns grey (I’m tone-deaf)/ ‘Cause they won’t stop until they cancel me,” referencing another line from the track, when announcing the release of the animated video on Friday, March 6.
    The attempt to cancel Em apparently kicked off in February, when a Gen Z TikTok user argued the rapper’s 2010 hit “Love the Way You Lie” glorifies toxic relationships and domestic violence. A user, who has been banned from the video-sharing application, played a snippet of the song and appeared to take issue with the lyric which goes, “If she ever tries to f**king leave again, I’ma tie her/ to the bed and set this house on fire.”

    In the critic’s video, the song plays while someone looks into the camera with the text “Yesssss lets [sic] cancel him” being displayed.
    Em, however, has survived from attempts to cancel him in the past. Throughout his career, he faced backlash for creating far more offensive music than “Love the Way You Lie”. One person even noted that the rapper’s debut single, “My Name Is”, opened with the line, “Hi kids, do you like violence?”
    Em was also heavily criticized when his unreleased song “Things Get Worse” leaked online in 2019. In the said song, he dissed Rihanna, whom he has collaborated with several times, including on “Love the Way You Lie”.
    “I’m not playing, Rihanna, where’d you get the VD at?/ Let me add my two cents/ Of course I side with Chris Brown/ I’d beat a b***h down too/ If she gave my d**k an itch now,” he raps on the controversial song.
    He then apologized to Rih on his song “Zeus” off “Music to Be Murdered By – Side B”, which part of the lyrics goes, “And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna/ For that song that leaked, I’m sorry, Ri/ It wasn’t meant to cause you grief.”

    AceShowbiz – Diane Warren will have to wait another year to pick up the prestigious Polar Music Prize as the ceremony has been postponed for the second year in a row.
    The songwriter and Anna Netrebko were named the 2020 laureates, but last year’s event was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, and now the rescheduled prizegiving has been bumped to May, 2022, when the two musicians will be honoured alongside the to-be-announced 2022 laureates.
    “Next year is special to us as it will be 30 years since the first presentation of the Polar Music Prize to Sir Paul McCartney and the Baltic States in 1992,” Alfons Karabuda, the chairman of the Polar Music Prize committee says. “We will continue in the very special tradition initiated by the founder of the Prize, the late Stikkan Anderson, but there is no such thing as business as usual with the Polar Music Prize.”

    The Polar Music Prize, founded in Sweden by ABBA manager Stig Anderson, is dispersed each year to one artist from the realm of pop and one from the world of classical or jazz music.
    Past recipients included Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Bjork, Sting’ Metallica, Grandmaster Flash, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, and Yo-Yo Ma.
