Emma Corrin Worked as Reader for 'The Crown' Audition Before Being Cast as Diana

    Netflix

The British actress who plays Princess Diana on the controversial fourth season of the Netflix hit royal drama series actually had a different role during audition.

    Dec 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Emma Corrin was brought in as a reader on “The Crown” before she was cast as Princess Diana.
The British actress was a relative unknown before landing the prestigious role in the fourth season of the Netflix drama. However, casting director Robert Sterne has revealed that she was actually involved in the programme in a different capacity at first.
Explaining that Emma was acting as a reader opposite the actresses auditioning for the role of Camilla Parker-Bowles in the show, Sterne told Elle magazine, “I usually read in all these meetings, but we decided because it was this major scene that we would get somebody to come in (for Diana).”
“We asked Emma to come in, not thinking about casting Diana at this point. But as she was reading with these Camillas, all the directors and the showrunner were looking more at her and not at the people playing Camilla – who will remain nameless, of course. When we got to thinking about Diana a year later, there she was in my notes.”

Emma was later cast as Diana opposite Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles while Emerald Fennell landed the part of Camilla.
The fourth season of “The Crown” caused big reactions as it focused on the relationship between Princess Diana, then-husband Prince Charles, and his lover Camilla.
The heir apparent to the British throne and his now-wife Camilla were forced to shut off the comment sections on their Twitter and Instagram due to backlash from Diana’s supporters.
British minister even asked Netflix to add a disclaimer warning fans that the show was a fiction, but the streaming service refused. Instead, the company promoted a documentary called “Diana: In Her Own Words” amid the controversy.

Steven Soderbergh at Odds With Movie Boss During Talks to Direct James Bond Movie

    WENN

The Oscar-winning director admits he was close to sitting behind the lens for a 007 movie but the negotiations eventually broke down because of creative differences.

    Dec 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Steven Soderbergh has admitted “important” creative differences stopped him directing a James Bond movie.
The “Ocean’s” trilogy filmmaker was once in talks with Eon Productions boss Barbara Broccoli – who oversees the 007 franchise – about being at the helm of a Bond blockbuster.
Asked about the discussions, he told the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, “Absolutely, I love that world. We were at odds about some things that were important.”
“We had some great conversations. It was fun to think about, but we just couldn’t… the last ten yards were, we just couldn’t do it, we couldn’t figure it out.”

However, Soderbergh would instead incorporate some of his 007 ideas into his other films, including 2011 action-thriller “Haywire”, which starred Gina Carano as black ops operative Mallory Kane who is betrayed by her employers and targeted for assassination.
“Aspects of it have shown up elsewhere. I would say, there are things in Haywire, in terms of its approach to the character, and it’s not a big movie, but there’s a little bit of activity in it,” he added. “That’s a hint of the kind of attitude I was looking for.”
And despite not getting to work on a Bond film yet, he’s still looking forward to watching Daniel Craig’s upcoming final turn as the fictional spy in “No Time to Die”, which was delayed until April 2021.
“I hope they’re able to figure out the release of the new one,” he said.

Zac Efron Called Out for 'Slipping the Tongue' During 'Hairspray' Kissing Scene With Nikki Blonsky

    New Line Cinema

The ‘High School Musical’ alum apparently went a little too far when he was filming his kissing scene with co-star Nikki Blonsky for the 2007 musical romantic comedy.

    Dec 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Zac Efron was called out by “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman for “slipping the tongue” on co-star Nikki Blonsky during their big kiss.
The former “High School Musical” star played Link Larkin in the big-screen adaptation of the hit musical, opposite Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad. After an illicit romance throughout the film, Link and Tracy finally share a kiss towards the end of the movie – but Nikki revealed on the “Women on Top” podcast that the moment nearly got them a PG-13 rating due to Zac.
“He slipped (his tongue) on me!” Nikki laughed. “Adam Shankman, our director, called him on it. Adam was like, ‘Hey, whoa, just caught the tongue!’ And Adam was like, ‘No! No tongue!’ He’s like, ‘This is PG, there is no tongue!’ ”

Nikki went on to reveal that she and Zac became firm friends while shooting the film, which was released in 2007.
“Not to make every woman and gay man jealous, but he was my best friend on the set of Hairspray,” she smiled. “Even when we weren’t filming, we were together on the weekends. (He was) constantly at my apartment and I was always at his, doing his laundry when he didn’t do it. I will toss him under the bus for not doing his laundry! And he knows it!”
The movie also starred the likes of John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, and Brittany Snow.
It went on to receive three Golden Globe nominations including Best Actress, Musical or Comedy for Nikki Blonsky and Best Supporting Actor for John Travolta. It also got a Grammy nomination for Best Soundtrack Album.

'RHOC' Star Elizabeth Lyn Vargas Gets Candid About Being 'Beaten' by Religious Cult Family

    Instagram

In a new episode of ‘The Real Housewives if Orange County, the newly-added cast member reveals that she ‘grew up in complete fear, anxiety, anguish’ in a ‘in a religious f***ing cult.’

    Dec 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Real Housewives of Orange County” is opening up about her rough childhood. In the Wednesday, December 23 episode of the Bravo reality TV show, the newly-added cast member shared about her background while hiking with co-star Braunwyn Windham-Burke.
“I was raised in a very, very religious situation, where I was told to absolutely not open my mouth, or tell the truth about what was happening, and I have a very, very hard issue with stopping the compartmentalization because I grew up in this horrible situation,” she told Braunwyn. “It’s why I don’t let people get to know me — I throw big parties, but no one really knows me.”
Braunwind responded, “I’ve been to those parties and none of those people are your friends.” To that, Elizabeth said, “I know, and I don’t want to live that way anymore.”
Elizabeth admitted that she needed help, though she didn’t know how to get it. “I’m not going to tell the girls, ‘Oh by the way, I was in a religious f***ing cult growing up that told me to shut my f***ing mouth or I’d be thrown under a bridge,’ ” she explained. “I really can’t talk about this. This is bothering me a lot,” she added while crying.

Elizabeth started to struggle to catch her breath, prompting Braunwyn to help her sit down. “You’re having a panic attack.”
In her confessional, Elizabeth revealed that she “grew up in complete fear, anxiety, anguish.” She went on recalling, “It was very, very hard for me. I was always scared for my life because we were beaten so bad that I thought for sure I was going to die one day of it.”
“My grandmother was the leader of the church and my father was the preacher and my family really wanted me to be a preacher,” she continued. “When I was 8 years old, my grandmother asked me to speak in tongues in front of the church and she says, ‘The Lord needs to speak through Elizabeth.’ And I just faked it and they all bought it — in fact, even a member passed out.”
“That was the exact day when I realized adults were full of s**t and that I could lie to get my way. I couldn’t stand what [the church] did,” she added.
Meanwhile, Braunwyn shared that she was confused about the whole thing. “I have no idea what she’s talking about,” she claimed in a confessional. “But if I can get her to open up and all these things that she’s been bottling up are going to come out, she’s going to feel so much lighter and she’s going to be able to breathe.”

Kim Cattrall on Stepping Away From 'Sex and the City': You Don't Want to Become That Caged Bird

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Amid rumors of a reboot with her three original co-stars, the actress famous as Samantha Jones in the hit series deems herself lucky to have had a choice to leave the franchise.

    Dec 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actress Kim Cattrall considers herself “lucky” to step away from the “Sex and the City” franchise amid rumors of a reboot with her three original co-stars.
Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis are said to be working on a “limited series reboot” for U.S. streaming service HBO Max, but Cattrall won’t be a part of the TV revamp, and she has no problem leaving her role as sex-crazed PR guru Samantha Jones in her past.
Cattrall has previously made it clear she has no interest in reprising her character, a decision which led to plans for a third “Sex and the City” movie to be ditched last year, and she has now reiterated her stance on the show.
In an interview on the “Women’s Prize for Fiction” podcast on Wednesday, December 23, Cattrall said of the original run of the hit drama series, “It was a lot of fun and I loved it and being in new territory is always exciting. I felt like we were.”
“Walking away, even if it’s the only thing to do, you always feel, it’s a bit of shame, I think. The taste of shame and you have to let go of that. You don’t want to become that caged bird (sic).”

The actress recalled some of the harsh backlash she received from “Sex and the City” fans when she refused to sign on for another movie sequel, but she is glad she can afford to opt out of projects which simply do not appeal to her.
“I’m lucky enough to have the choice, not that I haven’t worked for it. I have,” Cattrall continued. “It’s something I feel very lucky to have and I’m very protective of it. I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.”

Now Cattrall wants to focus her screen career on more specific projects, “I want to use my platform to tell stories about women my age who have gone through loss. Loss is the biggest headache for my 60s so far, I’ve lost my father. I’ve lost my brother,” she shared of her family heartaches.
Family patriarch Dennis died in 2012, while Kim’s brother, Christopher Cattrall, passed away in 2018.

Golden Globes Under Fire for Shutting 'Minari' Out of Best Picture Contention

    A24/Josh Ethan Johnson

‘The Farewell’ director Lulu Wang calls for a change in the HFPA’s policy, ‘Glee’ actor Harry Shum Jr. and The Black List founder Franklin Leonard throw in double standard accusation.

    Dec 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Golden Globes has yet to unravel its 2021 nominees, but it has got entangled in a controversy. After Variety brought out the report that Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” is out of the Best Picture competition due to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s category guidelines, a slew of celebrities stepped out to voice their frustration.
Among those blasting the HFPA for relegating the Steven Yeun-starring film to the Best Foreign Language Film category was “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang. “I have not seen a more American film than #Minari this year. It’s a story about an immigrant family, IN America, pursuing the American dream,” she tweeted.
The woman behind 2014’s “Posthumous” also called for change in the Globes eligibility rule that places any film with at least 50 per cent of non-English dialogue into the Foreign Language category. “We really need to change these antiquated rules that characterizes American as only English-speaking,” she further argued in the same tweet.

Lulu Wang called out HFPA for relegating ‘Minari’ to the Best Foreign Language Film category.
“Little Fires Everywhere” author Celeste Ng, on the other hand, expressed a stronger criticism at the policy. “This is a gorgeous film by an American, about Korean-speaking Americans in America, which would be a strong contender for awards in ANY category,” she tweeted. “The idea that only films in English count as ‘American’ is complete bulls**t.”

Celeste Ng blasted HFPA’s policy over Best Picture category.

      See also…

Also weighing in on the controversy, “Hawaii Five-0” actor Daniel Dae Kim pointed out, “The film equivalent of being told to go back to your country when that country is actually America.” Andrew Phung of “Kim’s Convenience” chimed in, “A sad and disappointing reminder that a movie about the American dream, set in America, starring an American, directed by an American, and produced by an American company, is somehow foreign. #Minari.”

Daniel Dae Kim and Andrew Phung weighed in on ‘Minari’ debacle.
Expressing similar sentiment were Phung’s co-star Simu Liu and “Pachinko” author Min Jin Lee. “Just for the record, Minari is an American movie written and directed by an American filmmaker set in America with an American lead actor and produced by an American production company,” wrote Liu, whereas Lee noted, “The English language is not an indigenous language. Enough of this nonsense about Asian-Americans being permanently foreign. I’m done.”

Simu Liu and Min Jin Lee expressed anger over ‘Minari’ debacle.
Others tookissue with the HFPA’s double standard using Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” as an example. “Shadowhunters” actor Harry Shum Jr. tweeted, “Checks ‘Inglorious Bastards’ English to German, French & Italian ratio – roughly 30:70 #Minari is an American film,” and The Black List founder Franklin Leonard noted, “Let us not forget that Inglorious Basterds was mostly not in English and was not classified the same way.”

Harry Shum Jr. and Franklin Leonard complained over Golden Globes’ double standard.
“Minari” was premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It went on to win both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award. Its story centers around a family of South Korean immigrants who try to make it in rural Arkansas in the 1980s. Meanwhile, the 2021 nominations of the Globes will be announced on February 3, 2021.

It will mark the first time Simon will judge a show he created outside the U.K. and U.S.
