Amanda Seyfried Turned Down 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Because She Thought the Movie Would Tank

    WENN

The ‘Mamma Mia!’ actress admits she was very skeptical when she was offered to portray Gamora in the James Gunn-directed superhero movie about a talking tree and raccoon.

    Dec 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Amanda Seyfried passed on the role of Gamora in “Guardians of the Galaxy” because she didn’t want to be a part of the first big Marvel flop.
The “Mamma Mia!” star felt sure the film would bomb even though James Gunn’s script was “great”, and now admits she was “very wrong.”
“I didn’t want to be part of the first Marvel movie that bombed,” the actress tells The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast. “I said, ‘Who wants to see a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon…?’ I was very wrong.”
The film went on to make over $770 million (£576 million) at the global box office.

“The script was great; it was all based in not wanting to be ‘that guy,’ ” Amanda adds, “because if you are the star of a giant movie like that, and it bombs, Hollywood does not forgive you. I’ve seen that happen to people and it was a giant, giant fear and I thought, ‘Is it worth it?’ ”
The role eventually went to Zoe Saldana.
In the comic book movie, she was joined by Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, and Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon.
After exploring the galaxy in two standalone movies, the Marvel ragtag team of misfits eventually joined The Avengers in “Avengers: Infinity War” and then returned for “Avengers: Endgame”. Now a third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie is currently in development as part of the Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Matthew Vaughn Keen to Turn 'Kingsman' Into New James Bond Franchise With Seven More Movies

    20th Century Fox

The filmmaker is planning seven more ‘Kingsman’ movies along with a television series, hoping to turn the action spy story into a franchise that could rival the famous 007.

    Dec 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Director Matthew Vaughn is planning “something like seven more” “Kingsman” movies alongside a TV series.
According to the CEO of his Marv Films production company, Zygi Kamasa, the filmmaker has numerous other projects relating to the spy franchise in the pipeline.
Kamasa told Deadline, “We want to grow the business and the output. We have a Kingsman TV series in the works and there are two-three other franchises that are being developed alongside the Kingsman world.”
The franchise consists of two movies with a prequel “The King’s Man” slated for release in 2021. A third film in the original series is also in the works and Matthew has previously revealed his desire to turn the films into a franchise to rival James Bond by exploring conflicts such as World War II.
He said, “If we go down the TV route we can explore the rise of Hitler, then go into World War II.”

“For me, it would be amazing to finally get to the Cold War.”
Matthew has also said how “The King’s Man”, which explores the origins of the Kingman secret service, will sow the seeds for the third movie in the main series.
He said of the film, which stars Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton, “We’ve put seeds for what’s going to happen in Kingsman 3 all the way back into this. And it’s going to be very different.”
The “Layer Cake” director revealed that he is also considering getting behind the camera for the untitled third motion picture, having previously planned to hand over to another filmmaker.
Vaughn said, “I actually don’t know what I want to do. There is an opportunity for a director to really change it up, but I’m considering it.”

Christopher Nolan Slams Warner Bros.' 'Messy' HBO Max Plans

    WENN/TNYF

The ‘Tenet’ director is in ‘disbelief’ over the studio’s decision to release all of its 2021 movies directly on ‘the worst streaming service,’ saying that ‘their decision makes no economic sense.’

    Dec 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan has spoken up against Warner Bros./HBO Max deal. The studio shocked fans and blindsided filmmakers and actors with their major decision to release their entire slate of 2021 movies, including “Dune”, “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “The Matrix 4”, directly on the streaming service.
While none of Nolan’s upcoming projects is included in the Warner Bros./HBO Max deal, the filmmaker couldn’t help empathizing with other industry workers. In a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Interstellar” director slammed the studio for the decision to skip theatrical release altogether and bring their movies to “the worst streaming service.”
“Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service,” he said in the statement.
“Warner Bros. had an incredible machine for getting a filmmaker’s work out everywhere, both in theaters and in the home, and they are dismantling it as we speak,” he continued. Believing that it won’t benefit anyone, Nolan added, “They don’t even understand what they’re losing. Their decision makes no economic sense, and even the most casual Wall Street investor can see the difference between disruption and dysfunction.”
Nolan also weighed in on Warner Bros.’ decision during an interview with ET Online. Admitting that he’s in “disbelief” with the studio’s move, he called out the studio for not consulting the filmmakers beforehand.

      See also…

“In 2021, they’ve got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they’ve got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences,” he explained what became a major letdown in the decision. “They’re meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences… And now they’re being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service — for the fledgling streaming service — without any consultation.”
Calling it “very, very, very, very messy,” he noticed there’s “a lot of controversy” to it. He went on describing the situation, “A real bait and switch. Yeah, it’s sort of not how you treat filmmakers and stars and people who, these guys have given a lot for these projects. They deserved to be consulted and spoken to about what was going to happen to their work.”
Expressing his faith that theaters will be back on full steam once COVID-19 is under control, he said, “Long-term, I think all of the studios know that the movie theater experience will bounce back and be a very important part of the ecosystem long-term.” He went on slamming movie studios for using “the pandemic as an excuse for sort of grappling for short-term advantage.”
“And it’s really unfortunate,” the London-born filmmaker lamented. “It’s not the way to do business and it’s not the best thing for the health of our industry. But when the theaters are back and people are going back to the movies, when the vaccine has been rolled out and there’s an appropriate health response from the federal government, I’m very bullish on the long-term prospects of the industry. People love going to the movies and they’re going to get to go again.”
Nolan himself had his latest film “Tenet” released in select theaters in August, becoming the first Hollywood tentpole to open in theaters during the pandemic, before heading to digital services on December 15. Warner Bros. is also the studio behind the sci-fi action movie.
Similar to Nolan, James Gunn, whose movie “The Suicide Squad” is among Warner Bros.’ 2021 slate, is reportedly unhappy with the decision. Sources told THR that the “platform-agnostic” director was “not pleased when the studio followed its shocking announcement by floating a lackluster formula for compensating him and other profit participants” in upcoming standalone sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad”.

Chadwick Boseman Sobbed Filming 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' His GF Had to Pick Him Up

    Netflix

Director George C. Wolfe recalls the late actor’s emotional moment when he filmed a poignant scene on the set of the Netflix movie, calling it ‘raw and explosive.’

    Dec 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – It’s no question that Chadwick Boseman always gave his best for every role he played. One of his last projects that was lucky enough to have the dedicated actor’s contribution is “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, which eventually became his final film.
Ahead of the film’s release later this month, the film’s director George C. Wolfe has shared one of his most memorable moments working with the late star. In a new interview with WSJ Magazine, he recalled Chadwick’s emotional moment when he filmed a poignant scene featuring his character Leeve and Cutler (Colman Domingo).
In the said scene, Leeve got into a physical altercation with Cutler over the latter’s belief in God. The scene ends with Leeve’s monologue during which he look up to the skies and challenge “Cutler’s God,” according to the magazine.
Wolfe admitted he didn’t think Boseman would attempt in one take. “We were doing it in a very casual way, and I assumed that when Levee got to the big speech that Chadwick was going to stop. But he didn’t stop,” he recounted.

The filmmaker then dished on how Boseman kept getting emotional even after the camera stopped rolling, “He kept going, and Levee took over-it was raw and explosive.” He went on remembering, “Afterwards, Chadwick just started to sob, and Colman hugged him, and then Chadwick’s girlfriend basically picked him up.”
While Wolfe didn’t know about Boseman’s battle with colon cancer at the time, the actor confided to him about keeping a big secret and the director found the actor’s comments making more sense in retrospect now. “He talked to me about having a secret, and how intense it is to reveal a secret to someone else, how vulnerable that makes you feel,” the director said.
Boseman’s co-star Domingo, meanwhile, remembered how Boseman would often seem preoccupied on set. “I could tell with Chad sometimes, he had something on his mind. He’d walk into a room and he wouldn’t speak to anyone,” the “Fear the Walking Dead” star shared.
He then would break the ice by jokingly confronting the “Black Panther” actor, “Oh, you’re just not going to say hi to anybody?” Domingo said Boseman responded by smiling, and he would shake Domingo’s hand and give him a hug every day on set since then.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, which stars Viola Davis in the lead role, will be available to stream on Netflix beginning December 18.

AceShowbiz – Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, and Lisa Kudrow are among the stars to poke fun at the year that’s been in a new Netflix mockumentary created by “Black Mirror”‘s Charlie Brooker.
Grant will play a “repellent” historian. British comedian and actress Diane Morgan is also among the cast members. However, much to fans’ disappointment, she is not playing Philomena Cunk, a silly character on TV moments and topical events in Brooker’s darkly comic “Wipe” franchise.
“Death to 2020” will also feature comediennes Tracey Ullman and Leslie Jones, “Stranger Things” star Joe Keery, and actors Kumail Nanjiani and Cristin Milioti, among others, reports Deadline.

In a statement about the spoof special, producers say: “‘Death to 2020’ is a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was – and perhaps still is? This landmark documentary-style special weaves together some of the world’s most (fictitious) renowned voices with real-life archival footage spanning the past 12 months.”
They also describe it as “the cathartic comedy event you’ll never forget about the year you really, really don’t want to remember”, and quip, “Even the creators of ‘Black Mirror’ couldn’t make this s**t up.”
Brooker also serves as co-executive producer on the quirky new project, alongside Annabel Jones, his creative partner on dystopian anthology series “Black Mirror”. “Death to 2020” marks their first collaboration. Meanwhile, Alison Marlow is set to be the producer.
A release date for “Death to 2020”, directed by Al Campbell, has yet to be revealed.

'Deadpool' Creator Shares Podcast Plans for Wise-Cracking Character's 30th Anniversary

    Instagram

Writer and artist Rob Liefeld will be devoting five episodes of his ‘Robservations’ podcast to the inside tales of the disfigured joker, promising he will cover the movies’ development and surprises.

    Dec 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Deadpool”‘s creator is marking the 30th anniversary of the fabled comic book character with a special audio tribute.
Writer and artist Rob Liefeld created the disfigured joker with writer Fabian Nicieza in 1991, when Deadpool appeared in the Marvel comic “The New Mutants”.
The character was reborn four years ago when Ryan Reynolds starred in a hit R-rated big screen adaptation and followed that up with a sequel in 2018. A third film is in development, with “Bob’s Burgers” writers and Emmy winners Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin tapped to pen the script.
Now Rob is devoting five episodes of his “Robservations” podcast to his wise-cracking creation, and he’ll cover the movies’ development too, promising surprises and exclusive details for fans.
“The inside tales I’ve been able to bring are the ones that seem to get the people most excited,” Liefeld tells The Hollywood Reporter of his podcast plans. “You are not going to want to miss the making of Deadpool told in five parts.”

Rob’s latest venture marks only the beginning of his return to the Marvel fold – next year (21), he will also design 30 new comic book covers for Marvel publications, including a special souvenir issue – “Deadpool Nerdy 30”, which will also include contributions from other writers and artists.
And he still can’t believe the global impact of his snarky guy in the suit.
“It never stops. And I’ve been there for all of it,” Liefeld adds.
A release date for the special “Robservations” series has yet to be announced.

Aerosmith Treat 'Wayne's World' Fans to Special Appearance During Virtual Cast Reunion

    WENN/Ivan Nikolov

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are brought into Josh Gad’s ongoing ‘Reunited Apart’ YouTube series since the actor looks for ways to get in contact with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.

    Dec 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Aerosmith stars Steven Tyler and Joe Perry thrilled “Wayne’s World” fans by joining a cast reunion, organised by Josh Gad.
The get together aired on Monday, December 7 as part of the actor’s ongoing “Reunited Apart” YouTube series, and began with Gad pretending to call the rockers to ask for the contacts of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, who played Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar in the cult film.
“You brought us – two world-famous rock stars – on your show to get in touch with two people we casually know?”, Tyler asked.

Perry and Tyler turned down a request to appear in the first “Wayne’s World” movie in 1992, but showed up for the sequel in 1993.

Alice Cooper, who did appear in the first film, also made an appearance during the reunion, as did Queen star Brian May.
Cooper confessed he was under no illusions when he got the call to be in the film, joking, “I think they probably couldn’t get the (Rolling) Stones or The Beatles. (They were) scraping the barrel until I was the only one left.”
“I was just supposed to talk, and then when I got there Michael (Myers) said, ‘Oh, by the way, here’s, like, eight pages to learn.”
Meanwhile, May revealed late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was a big fan of the film’s pivotal headbanging scene – when Wayne, Garth and two pals rock out to the band’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” in a car, explaining, “He loved it. He just laughed and laughed… He just smiled and laughed. He said, ‘How wonderful is that?’.”
Other highlights from the reunion included appearances from actress Tia Carerre, who played Cassandra in the film, and co-star Rob Lowe.
The reunion is the latest Gad has organised following the cast get togethers for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “The Goonies”, among others.
