Ava DuVernay Teams Up With 'Arrow' Writer to Tackle DC Superhero Naomi

    WENN/Avalon

The new series project for The CW network is based on DC Comics’ teenage girl character who sets out on an adventure when a supernatural event rocks her hometown.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Director Ava DuVernay is taking the story of DC Comics superhero Naomi to TV.
The “Selma” filmmaker is already set to take charge of the film adaptation of “The New Gods”, as well as a TV drama based on DMZ, and now she’s tackling another DC title – this time as a drama series for America’s The CW network.
She has teamed up with “Arrow” writer/producer Jill Blankenship to write and executive produce the new project, which is based on the new comic franchise of the same name by David F. Walker and Brian Michael Bendis. DuVernay will be producing through her Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television. Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes will produce for Array Filmworks.
“Naomi”, which debuted last year (19), follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Ava DuVernay thanked DC Comics for believing in the TV adaptation of Naomi.
“Working hard to bring these ladies to the screen. Thanks to @BrianMBendis @DavidWalker1201 + my writing partner Jill Blankenship for joining me on NAOMI. Love her.”
The cast of “Naomi” is yet to be announced. The project marks the latest DC adaptation at the youth-skewing network this development season.

Aaron Eckhart Credits 'Wander' Director for Helping Him Get Unhinged for His Role

    WENN/Brian To

During an interview on ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’, the ‘London Has Fallen’ actor talks about how he properly got into the character of a grieving private investigator for April Mullen’s thriller film.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Aaron Eckhart relished the chance to get “unhinged” for his new film – just like the guy he plays.
The “London Has Fallen” star plays a private investigator in “Wander”, who starts to go a little crazy when he’s assigned to a case he becomes convinced is connected to his own daughter’s death.
And Aaron “really enjoyed” being given the opportunity to get properly into character – thanks to a “gift” from the movie’s director.
“He’s a grieving father that lost his daughter and the story that he was given (about her death) never felt right,” he tells America’s “Live with Kelly and Ryan” talk show. “So he goes on and investigates it and he opens this large conspiracy. Everyone thinks he’s mad… He’s isolated himself on his ranch out in the desert in New Mexico and the director, April (Mullen), did a great thing for me our first day at work.”
“We got the whole crew in a big circle and we had a Native American chief and son come out and give us a prayer and sing us a song and we danced. And then April gave a speech and, unbeknownst to me, she looked at me and said, ‘Nobody talks to him’.”

“I didn’t know (she was going to say that) and I thought it was the greatest gift she ever gave me, because it gave me the time and space to become unhinged (for the role) and I really enjoyed that experience.”

Aaron also had a great time working with co-star Tommy Lee Jones, who plays his “one good buddy”, and he knew “Wander” was going to be a success when the veteran actor perfected his own character’s look.
“He had a choice between two pairs (of glasses) and I said, ‘Look Tommy, you’ve got to wear those, those are beautiful’,” he recalls.
“When Tommy put on those yellow glasses, that’s when I knew everything was going to be OK.”

'The Voice' Contestant Denies Breaking COVID-19 Rules After Dismissal From Show

    Instagram

NBC claims to have made the difficult decision to remove Ryan Gallagher from the competition since the network could not determine if his participation would not put others potentially at risk.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – TV bosses have confirmed singer Ryan Gallagher was kicked off U.S. talent show “The Voice” season 11 after breaching coronavirus safety protocols.
The wannabe exited the series last week (ends December 4), and now NBC executives have detailed the reason for his departure, explaining they “determined that Ryan could not participate in our Monday night show without potentially putting others at risk”.
“We made the difficult decision to remove Ryan from the competition,” a statement reads.

However, the star’s representative, Michael Catalano, has denied Ryan broke COVID rules. “In my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. Ryan understands all too well how serious the COVID-19 pandemic is in this country and around the world. In fact, recently Ryan’s mother in Michigan was hospitalised with COVID-19 and was in ICU (Intensive Care) for three weeks,” Catalano shared in response to the statement.
“It was a scary time for Ryan and his family and he certainly would not knowingly put anyone at risk by not adhering to the show’s COVID-19 policy. As you can imagine there is more to the story here than the show has announced and at an appropriate time and place of our choosing Ryan will respond to these damaging allegations.”
“Ryan, whose performing career began at age 15 as a back-up singer for Josh Groban in Michigan, has been devastated by the show’s dismissal. A career as a singer/performer has been his life-long dream.”
Gallagher was part of Kelly Clarkson’s team of talent on “The Voice”.

Netflix Will Not Add Fiction Disclaimer to 'The Crown'

    Netflix/Des Willie

The decision is made public in a statement in response to Culture secretary Oliver Dowden’s request for the streaming giant to add a disclaimer that the series is a work of fiction.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Amid controversy surrounding “The Crown” as many people in the U.K. slam the fourth season of the show over its depiction of the royal family, Netflix has revealed that it will not add fiction disclaimer to the series. The decision was made public in a statement to Deadline in response to Culture secretary Oliver Dowden’s request to add one.
“We have always presented ‘The Crown’ as a drama — and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events,” the streamer said in a statement to Deadline. “As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.”

Last week, Dowden urged the streaming giant to give a separate note to make it clear to the viewers that the show is nothing but work of fiction. He dished to The Mail on Sunday, “It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that. Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.”
Among those who criticize the new season of TV series was Earl Spencer, brother of late lady Diana. “I think it would help ‘The Crown’ an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that, ‘This isn’t true but it is based around some real events,’ ” he told ITV. “I worry people do think that this is gospel and that’s unfair.”
Cast member Helena Bonham Carter, who takes the role of Princess Margaret, agreed that it’s important to make a distinction between “our version” and the “real version.” She said, “It is dramatised. I do feel very strongly, because I think we have a moral responsibility to say, ‘Hang on guys, this is not… it’s not a drama-doc, we’re making a drama.’ So they are two different entities.”

George Clooney Trades 'The Boys in the Boat' With 'The Tender Bar' Due to COVID-19

    WENN/Nicky Nelson

Though insisting that the new movie about the U.S. rowing team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics is ‘ready to go,’ the ‘Michael Clayton’ star admits that filming has to wait until coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – George Clooney’s plans to make a new movie about the U.S. rowing team that upset the world at the 1936 Berlin Olympics have been shelved because he can’t put 5,000 extras in a stadium.
The “Michael Clayton” star is excited to get started on “The Boys in the Boat” and tells Deadline the screenplay is “ready to go,” but he has to wait until COVID restrictions are lifted before he can get started.
“That was a bestselling book about these kids from Seattle winning the rowing competition and beating Hitler in Germany in 1936,” he tells the outlet. “It’s a truly great, big sort of epic film.”

      See also…

“We’re ready to go but the truth of the matter is we’re waiting until we can put 5,000 (people) in stands because that can’t all be CGI (computer-generated imagery). You can’t do everything with CGI. It can’t just all be fake.”
So Clooney has shifted gears and is now ready to work on directing “The Tender Bar” – the film adaptation of J. R. Moehringer’s memoir.
“It is a really wonderful script based on a terrific book,” George explains. “I’m supposed to do that in March… We have a location scout and they’re looking at locations.”
Meanwhile, Clooney and his business partner Grant Heslov are also adapting John Grisham’s “Calico Joe” for Bob Dylan. “Bob Dylan got the rights from Grisham. He called us up and said, ‘You guys want to adapt it?’ I was like, ‘Yeah,’ ” George laughs. “It’s a great sort of baseball story… and we get to work with Bob Dylan of all people.”

Jason Bateman Takes a Jab at Past Chimpanzee Attack During 'Saturday Night Live' Return

    WENN/Adriana M. Barraza

When delivering his monologue for the December 5 episode, the ‘Ozark’ actor looks back at the scary moment he almost lost his nose to the ape co-star 15 years ago.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Jason Bateman relived a dangerous moment as he returned to host “Saturday Night Live” at the weekend, revealing he almost lost his nose to a chimpanzee.
The “Ozark” star last fronted the U.S. TV sketch show 15 years ago and recalled a nasty moment with an ape co-star.
During his monologue on Saturday, December 5, Jason explained the chimp tried to bite his face during the end credits – and showed the clip of the near-attack as the SNL regulars at the time watched in horror, but did nothing.

      See also…

“If that show did that sketch today, they would use a puppet or a kid in a fuzzy suit for safety, but back then, they used a real male adult chimpanzee. This was 2005 — things were loose,” he said. “Things were so loose that at the end of the show, the monkey was allowed to take a bow with us up here. We’re all hugging, we’re saying good night, the credits are rolling, and then the monkey tried to kill me.”
“I’m a nice fella — but not the chimp. The chimp unhinges his jaw, he flashes the teeth, and he tries to bite my entire nose off. … They hate that humans have faces and they want to remove them,” Jason jokingly recalled, before sharing the footage from the 2005 episode.
“I am smiling but inside I’m thinking a monkey just attacked me and nobody cares. They’re just hugging.”
Bateman then joked that he and the chimp made up backstage before he had the creature destroyed.

'Wonder Woman 1984' CCXP Teaser: 'The World Is Not Ready'

    [embedded content]

Warner Bros. has released a new sneak peek for the ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel starring Gal Gadot ahead of the movie’s Christmas (December 25) release in theaters and HBO Max.

    Dec 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – While fans have long waited for “Wonder Woman 1984”, the world may not be ready for the superheroine and her super powers. A new teaser released for the movie during Brazil’s CCXP on Sunday, December 6 contains this warning.
It features a voiceover saying, “Diana, one day, you will become all that you dream of and more. Everything will be different. This world is not yet ready for all that you will do. You will become a legend.”
The footage, meanwhile, switches from scenes showing Diana Prince’s (Gal Gadot) romantic and tender moments with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and her using her powers in heroic actions. The video ends with Diana and Steve staring lovingly at each other in what looks like a plane.
“Wonder Woman 1984” is set in 1984, during the Cold War. According to the official synopsis, Diana comes into conflict with two formidable foes-media businessman Maxwell Lord and friend-turned-enemy Barbara Ann Minerva while reuniting with her love interest Steve Trevor.
Kristen Wiig stars as Barbara Ann Minerva a.k.a. Cheetah, while Pedro Pascal is cast as Maxwell Lord. Robin Wright (previously Robin Wright Penn) returns as Antiope, general of the Amazon army and Diana’s aunt, with Connie Nielsen returning as Hippolyta, the queen of Themyscira and Diana’s mother.

The movie is directed by Patty Jenkins and is set for a December 25 release in theaters and on HBO Max in the U.S. only.
Meanwhile, first impressions of the film are already in and they mostly rave about the “Wonder Woman” sequel. “I’ve seen #WonderWoman1984!” Brandon Davis wrote on Twitter, “@PattyJenks literally made an 80s movie in every way, making it so unique for today. It feels both bigger than the first WW while simultaneously more contained. Lots of Diana Prince and some epic Wonder Woman moments as @GalGadot literally soars!”
Cinema Blend’s Eric Eisenberg gushed, “Huge news: Wonder Woman 1984 is fantastic! The story is excellent & has a great, timely message; it packs in a ton of surprises; and amazing work is done with both Cheetah & Max Lord (Wiig & Pascal are both stellar). Get hyped, because it’s the real deal.”
Amy Ratcliffe, managing editor at Nerdist, said that “Wonder Woman 1984” is “just what I needed. What we all need. It’s uplifting, hopeful, and so utterly Wonder Woman. Just a beautiful film with themes that hit you right in the heart.” She added, “WW84 doesn’t look or feel like any other modern superhero movie. I can’t wait for us all to talk about it!”
Fandago’s managing editor Erik Davis also chimed in, “I’m so happy to report that #WW84 is an absolute blast from start to finish. An exceptional compliment to the first film, it’s stuffed w/ heart, hope, love, action, romance & humor. @PattyJenks, @GalGadot & team delivered one of DC’s best sequels. I was in tears when it ended.”
