AceShowbiz – James Corden’s performance in “The Prom” has drawn the ire of movie critics. The actor/comedian has sparked backlash for his “offensive” portrayal of a gay character in the Netflix musical film, which is directed by Ryan Murphy.
In the upcoming movie, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” host plays gay Broadway actor Barry Glickman whose star is fading. Calling it miscasting, some critics believe that the role should have gone to Nathan Lane.
Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson wrote in his review, “Corden, who is straight, is so bad in ‘The Prom’-somehow both appalling and terminally bland.” He described the British star’s performance as “flitting and lisping around in the most uninspired of caricatures, misses all potential for nuance, and thus never finds even a hint of truth in the role.”
Newsweek critic Samuel Spencer dubbed Corden’s stereotypical performance “offensive,” while The Hollywood Reporter critic David Rooney agreed that the “Cats” star plays “a flaming gay stereotype” and “channels the mannerisms without the joy.” As the result, “It’s a flat performance without much heart.”See also…
The Telegraph critic Tim Robey opined, “In a cast full of talented queer actors in the younger parts, it’s a massive problem to have Corden in gay-face front and center.” He took issue with a particular scene “when he grabs Emma’s (Jo Ellen Pellman) hand and whisks her to the mall for a makeover.” He explained, “It’s an insult the film doesn’t even consider, stereotyping the young lesbian as fashion-clueless and the gay man as a bustling Queer Eye nightmare who made this reviewer embarrassed to be batting for the same team.”
Digital Spy critic Ian Sandwell blamed Murphy for making “a major error in the casting of James Corden as the musical’s gay male lead character.” He argued, “The result sees Corden camp it up to the point of being regressive and offensive, hitting every gay stereotype along the way.”
Among the many critics, however, TV Guide writer Damian Holbrook begged to differ, praising Corden’s performance as “fantastic.” When a Twitter user asked him in disbelief, “The pussy from Cats is fantastic?” he replied, “I know!”
Neither Corden nor Murphy has responded to the backlash.
“The Prom” centers on fading Broadway stars who are determined to make a high school student’s prom dream come true as part of PR stunt to resurrect her public image. The star-studded cast also includes Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells and Kerry Washington among others. AceShowbiz – Actress Lily Collins had to rely on her imagination to bring her portrayal of “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s secretary to life onscreen, because there was so little known about Rita Alexander.
“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” star features opposite Gary Oldman as the famed Hollywood scriptwriter in David Fincher’s new movie “Mank”, which chronicles the tumultuous development of Orson Welles’ 1941 cinematic masterpiece, but she struggled to find out more about Alexander’s life from press clippings and the history books before cameras started rolling.
“I really couldn’t (find much about her), there was very little research to be done, unfortunately,” Collins told U.S. breakfast show “Today”.
“I saw, I think, maybe two photos of her and from my research there were a few blurbs, but otherwise I had to leave it up to some imagination.”See also…
Despite the lack of resources, Collins is excited to have played a part in having Alexander’s role in the making of “Citizen Kane” documented on film.
“I just love the fact that we get to shine a light on this incredible woman who is really responsible for aiding Mankiewicz in his confidence, and kind of (gives him) that little kick in the butt that he needed to rise to the occasion sometimes when he got in his own head, so we really owe, I think, a great gratitude to Rita, so I was really honoured to get to tell her story.”
Production on “Mank” took place late last year (19), while Collins was still working on her Netflix drama series “Emily in Paris”, and she had to spend two weekends flying back and forth between France and the U.S. to juggle the two projects.
“It was quite strange,” she shared of switching between roles. “I had to fly back to Los Angeles twice during filming (of ‘Emily in Paris’) for 24-hour periods on the weekend to do camera tests, fittings, rehearsals (for ‘Mank’).”
“But luckily, Emily is bright, bold and a little bit obvious, and American, and then Rita is in a black and white world, she’s British, she’s more still and subtle, so the two characters couldn’t be more different, but it definitely was an interesting time to fit both in at the same time. AceShowbiz – “The Voice” season 19 revealed the results of Live Playoffs in the Tuesday, December 1 episode. Eight singers were eliminated while the other 9 contestants were moving onto the next round of the long-running NBC singing competition show. Singers with highest votes from each team would be automatically sent to the Top 9 with each coach being able to save one of their artists. One more singer would also be moving forward after winning the Wildcard Instant Save.
Saved by America’s Vote was Team Kelly Clarkson’s DeSz. Joining her in the Top 9 were Carter Rubin (Team Gwen Stefani) and Ian Flanigan (Team Blake Shelton). Additionally, Team John Legend had John Holiday moving onto the next round.
It was time for the coaches to choose one of their artists to be saved. After much deliberation, Kelly picked Cami Clune, while Gwen sent Ben Allen to the next round. As for Blake, he decided to keep Jim Ranger on the competition. John, meanwhile, saved Tamara Jade.
Unfortunately, host Carson Daly announced that Team Kelly’s Madeline Consoer was eliminated. Also among those who were sent home that night were Joseph Soul (Team Gwen), Sid Kingsley (Team Blake), Taryn Papa (Team Blake) and Chloe Hogan (Team John).

Meanwhile, the runner-ups from each team would take the stage once again to compete for the last spot in the Top 9 with Wildcard Instant Save. The singers who were up for it were Worth the Wait from Team Blake, Payge Turner from Team Gwen, Tanner Gomes from Team Kelly, and Bailey Rae from Team John.

Kicking things off was trio Worth the Wait, who performed “I’m Gonna Love You Through”. Meanwhile, Payge followed it up with a performance of Rihanna’s hit “Diamond”. Hoping to advance to the next round with “Pickin’ Wildflowers” was Tanner as Bailey returned to the stage to belt out “Never Again, Again”. Eventually, Bailey was named as the winner of Wildcard Instant Save, meaning that Tanner, Worth the Wait and Payge were sent home.You can share this post!

In the episode, former “The Bachelorette” star JoJo Fletcher visited leading lady Tayshia Adams to give emotional support. Additionally, JoJo would took place Chris Harrison’s hosting duty as he stepped away for a few days to take his son to college. Tayshia opened up to JoJo about her fear, saying that she didn’t want to go through a failed marriage.
As for the first date, it went to Zac. They played dress up for their date as they had a fantasy wedding photo shoot with the help of creative director Franco Lacosta. When asked about what a wedding day means to them, Tayshia called it something that she wanted to be cherished. Zac could see that Tayshia looked hesitant, but he tried to make her feel better. They shared a kiss as they changed to several outfits.
During the night portion of the date, Tayshia and Zac had dinner together as they enjoyed the warm while sitting down in front of a fireplace. Zac opened up about his health issue and his failed marriage. He told Tayshia that his ex-wife left him after he got arrested for DUI. It was then time for a group date in which they had to do a body painting. In the middle of the date, Ben claimed that he forgot something and left the room. He later came back after taking off his clothes and only donned a robe. He asked Tayshia to see a small part of him, prompting her to walk out of the room and start to cry. She then returned and told the men that she’s the luckiest girl in the world.
The next morning, Tayshia and Eazy had an amazing date in which they went ghost hunting. Eazy was easily scared but that was still fun. During dinner, Eazy told him that he’s falling in love with her. She thought Eazy was a good man but she didn’t think she was where he was. Much to his surprise, Tayshia left him.
Later, Tayshia asked Noah and Bennett to meet her to end their drama. At the cocktail party, one of them would go home. Bennett gave Noah a gift which consisted of a red bandana, mustached socks and emotional intelligence book. Tayshia told the two that she liked them both, adding that she had feelings for both for different reasons. The episode ended when Tayshia asked what was in the gift box.You can share this post!

AceShowbiz – Rita Ora has pulled out of an appearance on top-rated U.K. chat programme “The Jonathan Ross Show” after she was slammed for hosting an illegal 30th birthday party during lockdown.
The singer, whose mother is a frontline health worker, has apologised for inviting friends to a party at Casa Cruz in London on Saturday (28Nov20) – four days before London’s lockdown was lifted, and she has since paid a hefty fine to police for breaking the rules.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told MailOnline, “Police were called at 21:10hrs on Saturday, 28 November to reports of a potential breach of Covid regulations at a commercial premises in Clarendon Road, W11. Officers attended and carried out enquiries at the scene. They found no record of any offence being committed.”
London’s strict lockdown will end on Wednesday.See also…
In her apology, Rita called her actions a “serious and inexcusable error of judgment.”
She wrote, “It was a spur of the moment decision made with the misguided view that we were coming out of lockdown and this would be OK… I’m deeply sorry for breaking the rules and in turn understand that this puts people at risk. This was a serious and inexcusable error of judgement. Given the restrictions, I realise how irresponsible these actions were and I take full responsibility.”
“I feel particularly embarrassed knowing first-hand how hard people have worked to combat this terrible illness and being fully aware of the sacrifices that people and businesses have made to help keep us all safe. Even though this won’t make it right, I want to sincerely apologise.”

The Oscar winner was looking forward to jetting off to make the movie “Kill Switch” with Don Cheadle and the filmmaker, but had to turn to the job down for the sake of his family’s health.
“I’ve got a son with asthma,” Clooney tells Deadline. “It’s not like I can just go taking any chances.”
“I had to drop out of the Soderbergh film that he was shooting because of that, which was a bummer because it’s a great part. It looks like I would have gotten to work with Don Cheadle and everybody again. It really looked like fun.”See also…

U.K. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden hit headlines over the weekend (28-29Nov20) with his revelation that he’s planning to write to Netflix to ask them to put a warning on the show, about Britain’s Royal Family, for viewers to make it clear that it’s dramatised. And now Helena – who formerly starred as Princess Margaret in the programme – has told the New York Post’s Page Six that she agrees that it’s important to make a distinction between “our version” and the “real version.”
“It is dramatised. I do feel very strongly, because I think we have a moral responsibility to say, ‘Hang on guys, this is not… it’s not a drama-doc, we’re making a drama.’ So they are two different entities,” she said.See also…
Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer is among the other big names to have called for warnings at the start of “The Crown” as season four depicts his late sister’s relationship with her former husband Prince Charles.
“I think it would help The Crown an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that, ‘This isn’t true but it is based around some real events,’ ” Spencer told ITV. “I worry people do think that this is gospel and that’s unfair.”
