Melissa McCarthy Feels Lucky 'Nine Perfect Strangers' Made Her Family Move to Australia

    WENN/Adriana M. Barraza

Admitting that she came close from pulling out of the drama series, the ‘Bridesmaids’ actress reveals it was her eldest daughter’s reasoning that convinced her to make the big move amid the pandemic.

    Nov 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actress Melissa McCarthy almost pulled out of starring in upcoming TV drama series “Nine Perfect Strangers” after discovering producers wanted to move the shoot from Los Angeles to Australia.
The “Bridesmaids” star didn’t want to uproot her two daughters from their family base in California in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, until her eldest, 13-year-old Vivian, pointed out that officials Down Under had been much more successful than U.S. leaders in their efforts to contain the spread of the virus.
“We were gonna shoot in L.A., and then someone said, ‘Maybe because of COVID, do you want to go to Australia?’ ” McCarthy recalled on U.S. breakfast show “Today”. “I was like, ‘That’s crazy! I can’t move my family! You guys are nuts!'”
The funnywoman shared her disbelief at the proposal with Vivian, who was forced to do all her schooling online, and it was the teen who suggested making the big move for the duration of the production.
“I’m like, ‘Some maniac said, ‘Do you wanna go to Australia?’ ‘ and she was like, ‘Isn’t that one of the safest places in the world (right now)? Shouldn’t we go, today?’ ” McCarthy shared.

Vivian’s reasoning was enough to convince McCarthy and her husband, actor/filmmaker Ben Falcone, to head to Australia, where, until recently, there hadn’t been an outbreak of positive cases for months due to strict lockdown rules.

“Literally because she was so open to it, we’re here in a COVID-free place, which we totally understand how incredibly lucky we are (sic),” explained the actress, who also shares 10-year-old Georgette with Falcone.
“We’re here, (the kids) are back in school – real school – and everyone does all the protocols and we all live within the protocols, but there’s no COVID (sic), because they were like, bada** about it… It’s great.”
“I feel like we got hit with the lucky stick…,” she added.
McCarthy’s comments emerged as authorities in South Australia introduced new restrictions at midnight on Wednesday (November 18), forcing all schools, bars, and eateries to close, with outdoor exercise in public spaces banned and face masks now mandatory.
More than 27,000 people in Australia have battled the coronavirus, with just over 900 deaths, compared to the U.S., where the death toll surpassed 250,000 this week, with more than 11.4 million cases recorded to date.
“Nine Perfect Strangers”, based on the book of the same name by “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, also stars Nicole Kidman and Luke Evans, and focuses on the clients of a high-end health and wellness retreat.
It is expected to debut on streaming service Hulu in 2021.

Zack Snyder Claims His 'Justice League' Cut Includes Over Two Hours of Unseen Footage

    HBO Max

Speaking about his mini-series will debut in 2021, the ‘Batman v Superman’ director reveals the biggest change will affect Ezra Miller’s the Flash character and his power for super speed.

    Nov 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Moviemaker Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” revamp will feature well over two hours of unreleased material.
The director was forced to abandon the 2017 superhero movie due to a family tragedy, and hand over the reins to Joss Whedon, but when disgruntled fans demanded to see the film that he would have completed last year, a ‘Snyder Cut’ campaign was launched and Zack has been piecing together a four-hour epic for HBO Max for much of 2020.
The mini-series will debut in 2021 and Snyder reveals it won’t look much like Whedon’s version of his film.

      See also…

“I am looking at the actual visual effects shots because the cut is locked, so I’m just looking at these shots everyday as they come in,” he tells Vero. “It’s really exciting and I’m excited for you guys to see the giant amount of movie that you have coming your way… It is probably a solid two and a half hours of unseen footage in this movie.”
“That’s gonna be fun for everyone to experience this for the first time.”
The director reveals the biggest change will affect Ezra Miller’s the Flash character – and his power for super speed: “I know a lot of people love that aspect of it; I just don’t… I think it goes against physics. You (can) say they’re (people) protected by the Speed Force, but that’s open to interpretation.
“I feel like if you grab someone at the speed he’s moving at, you could literally tear their arm out of its socket. He’s moving so fast, it would literally peel the flesh off of somebody’s body, so he’s gotta be super careful with humans inside of the Speed Force.”

Emma Corrin on Backlash Over Princess Diana Portrayal on 'The Crown': It's Fiction

    Netflix

The British actress herself admits that playing the late mother of Prince William and Prince Harry is daunting, convincing herself, ‘This is ‘The Crown’ ‘s version of Diana.’

    Nov 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Crown” season 4 premiered to mixed reviews from viewers. Some praised Emma Corrin’s portrayal of beloved British royal family member Lady Diana, while some others were critical of the plot. In response to the backlash, Corrin admitted that this was a “difficult” situation.
During her appearance on “The Tamron Hall Show” on November 16, the actress was asked about recent reports about how royal family and members of British Parliament were not happy with the series’ depiction of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles.
“I think for everyone in ‘The Crown’, we always try and remind everyone that the series that we’re in is fictionalized, to a great extent,” she shared. “Obviously, it has its roots in reality and in some fact, but Peter Morgan’s scripts are works of fiction.”
However, Corrin could understand that some people might have difficulty in taking a narrative about a real-life figure. “At the same time, I understand why people would be upset because this is history,” she explained. “And even with Diana, it’s still very much fresh, I suppose–everything that happened. So I do really understand if people would be upset.”

“We approach these people that we play as characters, which is why it’s such a joyous job because Peter writes such rich and complex characters. And as an actor, it’s such a joy to really bring a lot to them,” she added.
Corrin herself admitted that playing the late mother of Prince William and Prince Harry was daunting. “This is ‘The Crown’ ‘s version of Diana,” she convinced herself. “That really changed it for me. It doesn’t remove the pressure and the responsibility that I feel, but it made it more manageable to do the role.”

Prior to this, it was reported that Prince Williams wasn’t happy with how his parents were portrayed on the hit Netflix series. “The Duke of Cambridge is none too pleased with it. He feels that both his parents are being exploited and being presented in a false, simplistic way to make money,” a source claimed. “In this case, it’s dragging up things that happened during very difficult times 25 or 30 years ago without a thought for anyone’s feelings,” the insider went on to say. “That isn’t right or fair, particularly when so many of the things being depicted don’t represent the truth.”

Taylor Lautner's Fans in Uproar as He's Not Returning for 'Sharkboy' Spin-Off 'We Can Be Heroes'

    Columbia Pictures

Fans are upset after finding out that the ‘Twilight Saga’ star is replaced by another actor in first-look photo of the standalone sequel to 2005’s ‘The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D’.

    Nov 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Sharkboy and Lavagirl return in first-look photos of “We Can Be Heroes”, but fans are not pleased. After Netflix and Robert Rodriguez unveiled official pictures of “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D” spin-off, many were left disappointed to learn that Taylor Lautner isn’t returning as one-half of the title characters.
In one of the images, Taylor Dooley, who reprises her role as Lavagirl, slips into her pink suit which matches her bright pink hair. She stands next to J.J. Dashnaw, who replaces Lautner as Sharkboy, with a blue-and-silver suit and half of his face being covered by a mask.
“Sharkboy and Lavagirl are back! And they’ve had a kid. Introducing…Guppy! #WeCanBeHeroes releases on @Netflix on New Year’s Day,” Rodriguez wrote alongside the photos shared on his Instagram account.

Meanwhile, Netflix accompanied its tweet with a caption which read, “Wanna feel old? Sharkboy and Lavagirl are parents now (and their daughter is played by Vivien Lyra Blair aka Girl from BIRD BOX). WE CAN BE HEROES releases globally on Netflix on New Year’s Day.”

      See also…

Noticing that the man in the Sharkboy suit isn’t Lautner, fans couldn’t hide their disappointment as one Twitter user commented on Lautner’s replacement, “WHO’S THAT SHARKBOY IMPOSTER WHERE IS TAYLOR LAUTNER.”
“Wait so Taylor Lautner is not back as Sharkboy? And that’s why they gave a helmet to the new actor,” another guessed. Someone else was quick to make up her/his mind as declaring, “If Taylor Lautner isn’t in the Sharkboy and Lavagirl spinoff I don’t want to see it.”
“how Taylor Lautner just decline some netflix coin and free press…,” a disappointed fan asked. Another angry fan mused, “So yall about to just do my boy taylor like that?” Another similar comment read, “not them making a new sharkboy and lavagirl without mr. taylor lautner.”
“I NEED TAYLOR LAUTNER,” one person demanded, while another echoed, “Noooo bring back Taylor.” Another person similarly uttered, “I’m sorry but Taylor Lautner will always be THE sharkboy and Netflix should’ve done everything possible to get him out of the cave where he’s hiding. I want my full 2005 nostalgia experience!”
Before he rose to international fame with his role as Jacob Black in the “Twilight Saga” movie series, Lautner was known for starring in the 2005 adventure film. The 28-year-old actor’s reason for skipping the spin-off movie is not disclosed.
Rodriguez, who directed the children’s movie, returns behind the lens for the standalone sequel, which centers its story on the children of Earth’s superheroes. “We Can Be Heroes” is set to be released on January 1, 2021 on Netflix.

Will Smith Makes Peace With Janet Hubert During 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' Reunion Special

    HBO Max

Daphne Maxwell Reid, Alfonso Ribeiro, Tatyana Ali, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Karyn Parsons and Joseph Marcell have also taken part in the get together that marks the show’s 30th anniversary.

    Nov 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Will Smith brought back both his “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” character’s Aunt Vivs for a reunion special, which aired on Wednesday, November 18.
The movie star shared a video clip featuring actresses Daphne Maxwell Reid and Janet Hubert hours before the 30th anniversary get together debuted on streaming service HBO Max and confirmed via Instagram that both would be part of the reunion.
“Two queens, one throne, all love! #FreshPrinceReunion tonight on @hbomax,” he wrote in the caption.

Hubert played Aunt Viv on the first three seasons of the sitcom before being replaced by Reid.
The reunion ended a feud between Hubert and Smith after she blamed him for her departure from the show – and her struggle to find work as an actress.
Smith and Hubert addressed their long-running feud with Will joking, “Been a long time,” when he greeted her on set.
“This has been tough,” Hubert told Smith. “I just wanted to know one thing: why did you guys go so far? I lost so much… You have no idea.”

      See also…

Smith confessed he wasn’t sensitive to his former castmate when she fell pregnant during the show’s third season, adding, “I can see where I made the set very difficult for Janet.”
She went on to reveal she was offered a terrible deal to return for a fourth season and turned it down, admitting she was deeply hurt by how quickly she was replaced – and her personal and professional lives took a big hit.
“I was banished… and they said it was you who banished me…,” she told Smith. “I lost everything… and I understand you were able to move forward but you know those words – calling a black woman difficult in Hollywood is the kiss of death.”
Tearing up, she then apologized for blasting Will “to pieces” in the media, prompting an emotional Smith to add, “The person I want to be is someone who protects you, not someone who unleashes dogs on you.”
Alfonso Ribeiro, Tatyana Ali, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Karyn Parsons and Joseph Marcell also took part in the reunion. The late James Avery, who played Uncle Phil on the show, was remembered during a tribute.
“The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” debuted in America on September 10, 1990, and became an instant international TV hit, running for six seasons.
The reunion show was scheduled to air on Thursday night, but Smith announced the show would drop a day earlier on Wednesday afternoon.
The get together ended with the former castmates all shedding tears as they recalled filming the final episode in 1996, before Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff performed the show’s beloved theme song.

'Masked Singer' Recap: Serpent and Whatchamacallit Sent Home in Double Elimination

    FOX

The episode sees Crocodile, the Serpent, the Whatchamacallit and the Seahorse from Group B performing before two of them are sent home in a heartbreaking double elimination.

    Nov 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – More disguised celebrity singers performed in a new episode of “The Masked Singer”. Airing on Wednesday, November 18, the episode saw two of the four singers from Group B being sent home in a heartbreaking double elimination.
The first singer to take to the stage to perform that evening for Group B finals was the Seahorse. Singing Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time”, she flaunted a spot-on Britney impression. Her final clue said that she was never in a girl group. Among the guesses by the panelist, Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger and guest panelist Cheryl Hines, were Kesha (previously known Ke$ha), Kellie Pickler and Sia Furler.
    [embedded content]
Following up was the Crocodile, who belted out “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. He said that he was in a huge cult classic movie for his final clue. The panelists thought that the Crocodile might be Jared Leto, Jordan Knight or Justin Guarini.
    [embedded content]
The Whatchamacallit, meanwhile, showed off his swag as he opted to perform “Lean Back” by Terror Squad featuring Fat Joe and Remy Ma. As for his final clue, he said that he won a championship. The panelists threw some names including Lonzo Ball, Carmelo Anthony and J.B. Smoove.

Concluding the night was the Serpent. He hit the stage to sing “Cool” by Jonas Brothers, flaunting his smooth, slightly raspy soul vibe. Despite looking reversed tonight, the Serpent was praised by the panelists. Robin called it a Super Six performance, while Cheryl dubbed the Serpent sexy. Jamie Foxx, Donald Faison and Dr. Elvis Francois were among the guesses.
    [embedded content]
After the voting process were done, the Seahorse was announced to be first singer heading to the Super Six that night. Before viewers learned who joined her in the Super Six, the Whatchamacallit was unmasked. Ken changed his final guess from Damian Lillard to Lonzo Ball, while Robin was convinced he was Michael Strahan. Jenny initially thought he was Winston Duke, but now she named Devin Booker. The Whatchamacallit was actually Lonzo Ball!
Later, it was revealed that the Crocodile was sent to the next round. That meant the Serpent was eliminated. Ken named Daveen Diggs as his final guess, while Nicole thought he was Dr. Elvis Francois. Jenny guessed John Legend. As for Robin and Cheryl, they guessed Donald Faison. The panelist guessed correctly again because the Crocodile was Dr. Elvis Francois!

    Interview: A Theatre Addict Writes

One practitioner describes how Covid-19 and lockdown have affected his work
When not reviewing for Everything Theatre, Nick Myles is a writer and all-round theatre addict. As our reviewers all give their time for free, we’re always more than happy to try to give a little back to say thanks. So when he told us about his latest project, it seemed the ideal time to ask Nick to tell us about how creating a show for online has differed from usual.
My name is Nick, and I am a theatre-holic. I get my fix any way I can: as an audience member, a writer, a director, a script-reader and a reviewer. Sometimes I’m at a show four or five times a week, and often I fill the spare days with stand-up comedy or the cinema. To say that drama and entertainment have taken over my life would be an understatement.
Of course all that was in the Old Days. Since late February when booked shows started dropping out of my diary like pheasants from the sky at a madman’s shooting party, the arts landscape looks very different. With only television, radio and box sets to feed my habit, the future seemed bleak. As well as all the shows I had expected to see, I had planned three theatre projects of my own for the summer months, all of which have been relegated to the back burner, and may not come to the boil until sometime next year, if ever.
But the creative urge is not easily thwarted. I’ve continued working on stage plays even if their future is distant and uncertain. I’ve switched one short play set in an office conference room (boring!) to a Zoom meeting, which adds a load of comedy potential as angry people are unable to punch each other in person, and “How’s your lockdown?” replaces the weather as the small-talk of choice.
But one project which was actually conceived after the national drawbridge was raised against infection marked a genuine change in direction for me as a writer.
I hadn’t written prose for a long time until I decided to write a Christmas ghost story for We Are Cult – one of the sites I occasionally review for – in 2018. I enjoyed the process, so with no theatres to write for, I thought “I’ll do something in prose about lockdown, and that’ll keep the creative juices flowing…”
That something became The Man in the Window, the story of Marcus, a single gay man who on the first “Clap Our Carers” night notices a neighbour across the road to whom he takes an immediate shine. Despite an almost complete lack of reciprocal interest, Marcus’s imagination begins to build a relationship between the two men…
As I plotted Marcus’s journey and explored his character – exactly as I would if writing a stage play – I began to realise that the most fitting medium for this piece would actually be a film. Marcus had developed a distinctly egotistical voice, the sound of which I could imagine him enjoying, and it occurred to me that a video diary/vlog format would work really well.
I’ve written and directed a dozen or so stage monologues, and my instinct told me that The Man in the Window had the potential to re-create the intensity of that person-to-person relationship between actor and audience. I started to re-write the piece, stripping out the more prosaic passages, and began to think about casting.
I had worked with actor Raphael von Blumenthal a couple of years ago when I cast him in my play Did He Leave a Note? at Stockwell Playhouse (RIP). I knew that this part was well within Raphael’s range, and crucially that he would be a great collaborator as we mined Marcus’s peculiar personality together.
And so a strange rehearsal process began. It was so different but also utterly familiar, in that it was me with a pad and pen watching an actor do their stuff and then giving them notes. The fact that we were on Zoom instead of in the same room was unconventional but actually irrelevant in the end. And the experience of watching Raphael bring this compellingly odd character to life was just as fascinating as any theatre project I’ve taken part in. Throughout, Raphael was superbly intuitive but also receptive to direction, which is the perfect collaborative combination.
Every production hits bumps along the way. We had one run-through during which it became clear that the direction we’d taken in Part 2 jarred against the scenes around it: my efforts to energise this section worked in isolation, but viewed alongside the rest of the film it sounded a discordant note. I panicked a bit, grasping for a solution, while of course concealing the extent of my concerns – directors do not reveal such insecurities to their actors…
I thought we had a mountain to climb, but after a few hesitant notes from me about dialling down the scorn and raising the curiosity, Raphael in the very next take solved the issue completely.
Encountering – and hopefully fixing – these issues as they arise in the rehearsal room is par for the course in theatre. But whereas in the Old Times I would probably have paced about a bit and thrown some possible solutions around, that’s not really an option on Zoom. Probably the main difference with video rehearsing is that its restrictions make the process more focussed.

Whilst addicts like me will inevitably hanker for the return of the intoxicating plethora of theatre we used to have at our greedy disposal, the old status quo seems an impossible dream right now. Some big buildings are re-opening with drastically reduced audiences, which is of course a Good Thing. But what of the Fringe, where dramatists such as myself and thousands of others were used to plying our trade while we hope for that break into the mainstream? It’s difficult to imagine pub theatres and other fringe venues with small, compact seating and intimate stages being able to revive themselves in the near future.
Until that far-off day, film projects and video-rehearsing are part of the theatre community’s New Normal. And I’m happy to say that the experience of creating The Man in the Window and bringing the production to fruition with Raphael has been one of the most rewarding of my career to date.
    ===================================
The Man in the Window (a lockdown love story), written and directed by Nick Myles, performed by Raphael von Blumenthal, is available to watch for free in three easily digestible chunks. More
