  • Alex Desert Joins 'The Simpsons' to Replace Hank Azaria

The ‘Better Things’ actor has been recruited to provide voice for Homer Simpson’s colleague Carlton Carlson originally voiced by Hank Azaria before he left the show.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Alex Desert has stepped in to voice Homer Simpson’s colleague Carlton Carlson on “The Simpsons”, following bosses’ decision not to have white actors voicing non-white characters on the show.
The “Better Things” star will be replacing Hank Azaria in the role although it’s unclear whether or not he will be a permanent replacement for Azaria – who had voiced Carl since the beginning of the show apart from his very first appearance.
The move comes after producers pushed for more diversity on the programme by announcing that they will no longer enlist white actors to voice non-white characters.

It also comes after Azaria stepped away from his role as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon on the show in January (20), following backlash surrounding his “stereotypical” voicing of the Indian character.
Desert’s debut on the programme can be heard on the season premiere of “The Simpsons” this Sunday (27Sep20).
Hank Azaria, a white voice actor, was harshly criticized by comedian Hari Kondabolu before he gave up his role as Indian shop clerk Apu. “Everything with Apu is like this running joke,” Kondabolu told the New York Times. “And the running joke is that he’s Indian.”
As Azaria later left the show, he said he wouldn’t “be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something. We all made the decision together… We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.”

  • 'The Boys' Getting R-Rated Spin-Off

    Amazon Prime

The new project is expected to explore ‘the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test.’
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – A new spin-off series based on Amazon’s original series “The Boys” is set to hit the platform.
The superhero TV series, which follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities, quickly became Amazon Prime Video’s most successful original series when it debuted last year (19).
While its second season, starring Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty, is currently airing, a new project which takes place in superhero college is currently in the works.

According to Deadline, the new show will be written by “The Boys” executive producer Craig Rosenberg and is described as an “irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities.”
Further details of the show remain under wraps.
“The Boys” is based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The upcoming season 3 is expected to have “Supernatural” star Jensen Ackles as a new addition to the cast. He will play World War II veteran Soldier Boy, a character described as “the original superhero,” who became “the first super celebrity, and a mainstay of American culture for decades.”
The role will reunite Ackles with “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke. “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream – to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true,” Kripke quipped.

  • Matt Bomer Feels the Need to Do 'Something Ritualistic' for Purging After Filming New Movie

    WENN

The ‘White Collar’ actor opens up about the need to do some ‘purging’ by doing ‘something ritualistic’ after filming ‘The Boys in the Band’ about the Stonewall riots.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Matt Bomer had to “do something ritualistic” to give himself some closure after a day of filming new movie “The Boys in the Band”.
The movie is based on the play of the same name, which tells the story of a visitor who turns an evening upside down when he interrupts a gathering of gay men in New York City in 1968. It’s set a few months before the Stonewall riots – a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community in response to a police raid that began at New York’s Stonewall Inn – and the difficult nature of some of the scenes required Matt do some “purging” once he’d finished filming.
Matt, who also starred in the Broadway run of the play in 2018, told Britain’s The Guardian newspaper, “At the end of the play each night there’s some closure. You’ve purged. Whereas on film, you have time to go home and overthink. It’s this lingering experience that bubbles up throughout the shoot. Sometimes with films I need to do something ritualistic to bring the experience to a close once it’s finished.”

Asked for an example by the interviewer, Matt replied, “Oh, it will all sound too esoteric and strange. I’d rather keep it mysterious than make it corny.”
The 42-year-old came out publicly in 2012 and admitted that “certain things” changed for him after he revealed his sexuality.
“Certain rooms I used to frequent – suddenly the door was closed. But I also engaged with artists who don’t care, who just want the actor they believe is best for the role, and those are the artists I wanted to be working with anyway so I don’t count it as any kind of loss,” he insisted.
“The Boys in the Band” will be released on Netflix on 30 September.

The ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ actress is set to play infamous lawyer Roy Cohn in the upcoming fundraising performance of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize winning play.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Glenn Close has signed on to play infamous real-life lawyer Roy Cohn in a charity performance of groundbreaking play “Angels in America”.
The iconic actress will play the attorney and fixer, best known for trying to route out communists among Washington, D.C.’s political elite in the 1950s, in “The Great Work Begins: Scenes From Angels in America”, an hourlong livestream benefit for the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) Fund to Fight Covid-19, which aids coronavirus research.
Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, examining AIDS and homosexuality in America amid the HIV pandemic of the 1980s, debuted on Broadway in 1993, and amFAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost insists the new reimagining will be particularly relevant amid the current public health crisis and resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Angels is an intensely personal work that is so much more than just an AIDS play and, in this time of COVID and national unrest, its themes of racism and government failings make it as relevant and resonant today as it was when it was first performed 30 years ago,” Frost wrote in a statement.
Alan Cumming, Whoopi Goldberg, Jake Gyllenhaal, Laura Linney, Patti LuPone, S. Epatha Merkerson, Brian Tyree Henry, and other names are among the all-star line-up for the free online event, which features self-filmed scenes edited together.
Fans will also have a chance to chat with castmembers during a live 45-minute conversation immediately following the performance with a donation of $100 (£79) or more.
“The Great Work Begins: Scenes From Angels in America” benefit event for the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) Fund to Fight Covid-19 airs on 8 October (20) on the Broadway.com YouTube channel.

  • BAFTA Awards Announces 120 Changes to Combat Lack of Diversity

    Instagram/Sarah M Lee

The BAFTA officials have made over 100 changes of their awards system, which includes an increase in nominations in the acting and directing categories.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – BAFTA officials have launched a complete overhaul of the annual film awards to combat claims of sexism and racism.
The organisation hit headlines after its own president, British royal Prince William, took chief executive Amanda Berry to task over a lack of diversity in the prizegiving.
Now, a raft of 120 changes has been announced in a bid to see more females and BAME stars recognised at the annual BAFTA ceremony.
Changes will include an increase in nominations in the acting and directing categories, in addition to a new longlisting round of voting in all categories to achieve greater diversity in nominations.
It will also become compulsory for voters to watch all longlisted films before the second round of voting, to ensure a more equal playing field.

BAFTA chair Krishnendu Majumdar said of the changes, “This is a watershed moment for BAFTA. The Academy has never opened itself up like this before.”
“The sessions with contributors were tough, chastening, captivating and very moving,” he confessed. “Many colleagues from under-represented groups bravely shared their experiences of racism and discrimination in their careers.”
“Representation matters and we’ve all been starkly reminded of this with the rise of the global anti-racist movement. This creative renewal is not just about changes to the awards and membership – this is a reappraisal of our values and the culture of BAFTA. We want long term and sustainable change throughout the industry.”
Representatives from Kensington Palace confirmed Prince William “welcomes the review as a positive step towards greater diversity in the awards process and across the industry.”
It comes after Oscars officials confirmed movies will have to meet new Inclusion Standards to be eligible for Best Picture prize at the prizegiving.

  • Chris Rock Calls Cardi B 'Comedy Star' as He Recalls Trying Hard to Get Femcee Her Own Show

    WENN

The ‘Grown Ups’ actor loves Cardi’s witty remarks when he was first introduced to her by his children through the internet before her ‘Bodak Yellow’ fame.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Funnyman Chris Rock once tried to turn a then-unknown Cardi B into the comedy world’s next big star by suggesting she front her own show.
The “Grown Ups” actor reveals his children turned him on to rap sensation Cardi before she rose to fame on reality show”Love and Hip Hop: New York” after which she launched her music career with her breakout smash “Bodak Yellow” back in 2017.
However, when he first heard the hip-hop star crack jokes to fans online, he thought she had the talent to embark on a major comedy career – and even tried to shop the idea to TV bosses.
“Cardi B, I saw on some, like, YouTube thing or whatever. Again, my kids show me this Cardi B girl, and she didn’t have a record out or anything,” Rock explained on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. “And I was like, ‘OK, we should go show it (propose the idea for a show).’ I’m not even gonna say what network but… I went – me, Cardi B and her management, you know, to kind of like get a show going.”

TV chiefs passed on the project, and even though the “WAP” hitmaker made it clear she was more interested in finding success in the music industry, Rock was adamant she was destined for the comedy stage.
He recalls hearing about her music dreams and dismissively responding, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, that’s good. Anyway. You’re a comedy star.”
Even now, Rock believes Cardi, who is known for her witty remarks and quips online, has what it takes to joke around with the best of the best.

“I think Cardi B’s the funniest woman, or one of the funniest people,” he said. “You know, it’s like (Dave) Chappelle, Cardi. Like, in the standings right now, like who are the funniest people in the world? Cardi’s right up there. She’s neck and neck with Bill Burr. Like, she’s good, man… Cardi can hang with anybody.”

  • Tom Hanks Used His Own Money to Film 'Forrest Gump' Scenes

    Paramount Pictures

The Oscar-winning actor reveals in a new interview that he helped director Robert Zemeckis finance some scenes in their critically-lauded feature film due to limited budget.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Tom Hanks dug deep to help finance some parts of his beloved movie “Forrest Gump”.
The actor appeared as the titular character in the 1994 film, about a man with low IQ who recounts the early years of his life when he found himself in the middle of key historical events and longs to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Jenny.
In a new interview, the 64-year-old revealed that the movie is particularly special to him because he invested some of his own money into the Oscar-winning flick.

One of the scenes that Tom backed, along with filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, was the run across America. He explained, “And (Zemeckis) said, ‘Well, this run is going to cost X amount of dollars.’ And it wasn’t cheap. And I said, ‘OK.’ ”
“He said, ‘You and I are going to split that amount, and we’re going to give it back (to Paramount),” he told In Depth with Graham Bensinger. “We’ll give you the money back, but you guys (Paramount) are going to have to share the profits a little bit more.’ Which the studio said ‘Fabulous, great. ok.’ And it was good for us, too.”
The deal gave Tom and Robert a larger percentage of the film’s box office gross and eventually earned them about $65 million (£51 million) in profits from the movie.
Both Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis went on to win Academy Awards and Golden Globes for Best Actor and Best Director respectively.
