  • John Leguizamo Points Out the Downside From Lack of Latino Representation in Hollywood Movies

The ‘Critical Thinking’ director recalls that he, along with Benicio Del Toro, Luis Guzman and Benjamin Bratt, used to be auditioned for roles that were ‘horrible and degrading.’
    Sep 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – John Leguizamo is appalled Latinos are so rarely seen on screen in America, even though they make up 20 per cent of the population.
The actor released his directorial debut “Critical Thinking”, which features a largely Latin cast, earlier this month and now reveals he is devoted to fighting for change onscreen.
“We’re less than one per cent of the stories told by Hollywood and streaming media and networks when we’re almost 20 per cent of the population,” he tells People magazine. “I just feel like it’s such a damage to kids not to see themselves reflected back in positive ways.”

Leguizamo, who grew up in diverse Queens, New York, learned early on in his career that roles for Latinos are scarce.
“A lot of my white friends from college were going to five auditions a day, and I was going to one every few months – if I was lucky. And it was always for something horrible and degrading,” he adds. “I was like, ‘Wait a minute, we went to the same school, studied with the same teachers. I had the same ability but not the same opportunity’.”
“At auditions it would always be me, Benicio Del Toro, Luis Guzman, and Benjamin Bratt, and the roles were for gang members or thieves and murderers.”
After three decades in showbusiness, the “Moulin Rouge!” star used his frustrations to create his own work, starring in the acclaimed one-man shows “Mambo Mouth”, “Spic-O-Rama”, “Freak”, and “Latin History for Morons”. Each venture tackled stereotypes about his community.

  • Jane Sibbett: I Was Actually Up for Jennifer Aniston's 'Friends' Role

    WENN/Tony Oudot

Despite missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime, the actress who went on to portray Ross’ ex-wife Carol insists that ‘The Morning Show’ star was perfect for the part of Rachel Green.
    Sep 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Friends” star Jane Sibbett was initially offered the TV role that made Jennifer Aniston’s career.
The actress portrayed Carol, the ex-wife of David Schwimmer’s character Ross, on the beloved series, but reveals she was offered the role of Rachel Green early on in the casting process.
“I actually was up for another character,” she tells news.com.au. “They wanted me to be one of the main six. It was actually Rachel but I usually don’t tell people that because Jen… There’s no one who could’ve done it like Jen.”
But Sibbett had to decline the role after she fell pregnant with her second child. She now shares Ruby, 29, Kai, 26, and Violet, 20 with ex-husband Karl Fink.

“I asked them (the agents) if they’d told the producers I was pregnant (at the time) and they said, ‘Oh no, we thought we’d tell them later’. And I said, ‘No, you’ve got to tell them now’. So, obviously they (producers) said it wouldn’t work out.”
Despite missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime, she has no regrets, insisting Aniston was perfect for the part.
“There’s no way anybody could have come close to what Jennifer Aniston did with Rachel,” she adds. “She was so perfect.”
Sibbet was shocked after Anita Barone, who originally played Carol, quit suddenly and she was called in to replace her.
“So I got home from hospital after giving birth to my son and I got a phone call saying that they were replacing Carol and could I come to work the next day,” she shares. “Two days after I delivered my son he and I were on the set. I was in a milky haze. But it was funny. It was only supposed to be a two-week job, so I’m very grateful.”

Announced earlier this month, “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” has received a direct-to-series order from executives at the network.

“Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” is set within the existing “PLL” universe, but it will focus on a brand new group of liars tormented by a brand new version of A. The official description of the series reads, “Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls–a brand-new set of Little Liars–find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago…as well as their own.”

It continues, “In the dark, coming-of-RAGE, horror-tinged drama ‘Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin’, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing ‘Pretty Little Liars’ universe–in a brand new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.”
Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as executive producer and writer, alongside co-executive producer/writer Lindsay Calhoon Bring, who he previously teamed up with for the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”.
“We’re such huge fans of what I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created,” Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring said in a statement. “We knew that we had to… do something different, so we’re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements.”
The original series debuted in 2010 and ran for seven years. Two spin-offs, “Ravenswood” and “Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists”, have since premiered but both were canceled after one season.

  • Eddie Redmayne Battles Food Poisoning in Morocco When Receiving 'Trial of the Chicago 7' Script

    WENN/Avalon

Speaking about his involvement in the legal drama film, the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ star recalls how director Aaron Sorkin gave him freedom to explore his portrayal of Tom Hayden
    Sep 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Eddie Redmayne read up on his dream gig while battling food poisoning and a ruptured foot in a Morocco hotel.
The Oscar winner had always longed to appear in an Aaron Sorkin film and the screenwriter-turned-director’s script for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” could not have arrived at a better time.
“When I first read Aaron’s script I was in Morocco on holiday,” the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” star, who portrays Jane Fonda’s activist ex-husband Tom Hayden in the film, says. “I had food poisoning, and I had ruptured my foot, so I couldn’t leave the hotel. I was feeling so miserable and sorry for myself when this email pinged through with a script from Aaron Sorkin.”

      See also…

“Quite often as an actor you’re asked what is your bucket list, what character do you want to play, who do you dream of working with? There was only one person on my bucket list and that was Aaron Sorkin. It was by far the most thrilling, funny, enlightening, and emotional piece of writing that I’d ever read. I finished it and called up my agent and said, ‘Count me in, in whatever capacity’.”
And Redmayne had an early run-in with perfectionist Sorkin as he tried to get Hayden’s voice just right: “Aaron was very strong to liberate me early as I was working on my voice, and Tom had a very specific voice. Aaron said, ‘I don’t want this to be a replica of Tom Hayden. I want you to play my version of him’.”
“The Trial of the Chicago 7”, which also features Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and 2020 Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, opens in select cinemas this weekend (September 25) before debuting on Netflix on October 16.

  • Ron Howard Criticized for Directing Lang Lang Biopic

    WENN

The ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ director is facing backlash from Chinese filmmaker Lulu Wang as he is signed on for the upcoming movie about Chinese famous pianist.
    Sep 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Farewell” filmmaker Lulu Wang fears Ron Howard lacks the cultural knowledge to make a movie about her fellow Chinese national Lang Lang.
Howard confirmed he would be directing the film about the classical pianist earlier this week (beg21Sep20), but Wang isn’t convinced the “Apollo 13” moviemaker is the right person for the job.
“As a classically-trained pianist born in China, I believe it’s impossible to tell Lang Lang’s story without an intimate understanding of Chinese culture + the impact of the Cultural Revolution on artists & intellectuals + the effects of Western imperialism. Just saying,” Wang tweeted.
“I’m not saying this because I want to direct this movie. I do not. I just don’t think these are the artists to grapple w/ (with) the cultural specificities of Northeast China where Lang Lang (and my family) are from. Or w/ the cultural aspect of the physical violence in his upbringing.”

The director added, “Have we learned NOTHING from Mulan?” – referencing critics’ claims that Chinese history has been whitewashed to appeal to Disney audiences. “I haven’t said anything because yes representation and many people I love are involved, but I just have to. Just HAVE to. Because 2020 man… and I’m f**king exhausted.”
It has been discovered that portions of “Mulan” were filmed in the Xinjiang province of China, where Uighur Muslims have been detained in mass internment camps.
Howard’s new film, “Journey of a Thousand Miles”, focuses on pianist Lang Lang’s early life in China to his success as one of the most famous classical musicians in the world.
He will executive produce Howard’s biopic and seems to like the choice of director, stating, “Dream big, work hard, and always believe in yourself. This movie, thanks to Ron Howard’s vision, will inspire young people around the world to follow their dreams and never forget they are one in a million.”

The Kardashians momager has responded to ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ rumors while opening up about the family’s original plan to do ‘KUWTK’ for another couple of years before the ax.
    Sep 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kris Jenner was “talking about signing up for another couple of years” of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” when she and her family decided to axe the show.
The mum-of-six spoke with Ellen DeGeneres in an interview set to be aired of Thursday (24Sep20), sharing that the decision to end the hit reality TV show after 20 seasons was “sudden.”
“I think we were talking about signing up for another couple of years with our network and suddenly just all came to the decision as a group that the whole family felt it was just time. It just sort of came to us. We thought, 20 seasons, 14 years, hundreds of episodes, lots of spinoffs,” Kris reflected.
“It’s so weird to think that when we started the show, there was barely Twitter, there were no other social media platforms,” she added. “There was no Instagram, there was no Snapchat. There were no grandchildren, people weren’t married or divorced.”
“It’s just so crazy that all of this has happened and to look back and think I have the most amazing home movies in the world,” the star smiled.

Kris also addressed rumours she might be joining the cast of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, musing, “I think I would do it just to go on once in a while to be with my friend Kyle Richards, but as far as me doing a show like that regularly, there’s just too much going on in my life.”
“And they do not need a Kris Jenner on that show,” she laughed. “They are doing just fine.”

Kris’ daughter Kim Kardashian first broke the news that the show was coming to an end earlier this month, saying that the family is “beyond grateful to all of you who’ve watched us for all of these years – through the good times, the bad times, the happiness, the tears, and the many relationships and children.”
The note was signed by Kris, Kardashian siblings Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Rob, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Kourtney’s ex, Scott Disick.
