Preview: Godot is a Woman, Pleasance Theatre

In 1953 a man wrote a play about waitingIn 1988 he sued five women for trying to perform itIn 2001 Madonna released ‘What It Feels Like for a Girl’ It’s 2020 and we’re still waiting.

    Playing between 8 – 12 June 2021

After two postponements in 2020, Godot is a Woman is finally set to hit the stage. Third time lucky.

Silent Faces make ensemble-led devised theatre and are proud to be an integrated company of disabled and non-disabled artists. Godot is a Woman follows the critically acclaimed A Clown Show About Rain (“Delightful” Scotsman) and Follow Suit (“Marvellously comic and compelling” The Stage).“We’re excited to see Silent Faces take a swing at the patriarchy with Godot is a Woman. The Beckett Estate’s refusal to allow women to do Waiting for Godot (and who even knows where they stand on gender non-conforming people) seems a relic of a bygone time and deserves interrogation.  In their inimitable style, I have no doubt that Silent Faces’ new show will not only rage but question, challenge and hopefully inspire us all!” Nic Connaughton, Head of Theatre at Pleasance Theatre

With their trademark style of playful and political physical theatre, Silent Faces explore permission, patriarchy and pop music in Godot is a Woman.

We all know what it’s like to wait, don’t we? Waiting for our banana bread to come out the oven, waiting for Boris Johnson’s 5 o’clock announcement, waiting for permission from male playwrights to perform plays about the human condition. Since Waiting for Godot was written, non-men all over the world have been waiting to fill the boots of Vladimir and Estragon. Nearly 70 years later, the playwright is dead and his estate still says no to the casting of women.

Today Ariana Grande tells us that ‘God is a Woman’… so we’ve decided we’re done waiting. Samuel Beckett? As Grande would say: thank u, next.

The show plays between 8 and 12 June, with a matinee performance as well on the Saturday. More

Ted Cruz Roasted for His Jason Bourne-Standard in Criticizing CIA's Inclusive Recruitment Ad

    Instagram/Universal Pictures

The Texas senator becomes the subject of mockery after commenting on the agency’s ad by claiming that CIA agents have ‘come a long way from’ Matt Damon’s fictional character.

    May 4, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Ted Cruz has become the butt of the joke after slamming CIA’s recruitment ad. The Texas senator attempted to criticize the agency’s message with the ad by comparing its agents to Jason Bourne, but it has since backfired.

The ad in question celebrates diversity and inclusivity as it highlights a female cisgender agent of color. In the said ad that Cruz reposted on Twitter, the CIA agent describes herself as saying, “I am a woman of color. I am a cisgender millennial. I have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. I am intersectional.”

Unimpressed Cruz then weighed in on it, writing along with the video, “If you’re a Chinese communist, or an Iranian Mullah, or Kim Jong Un…would this scare you?” He added, “We’ve come a long way from Jason Bourne.”

It didn’t take long for other Twitter users to mock the Republican politician over his comment on the ad, pointing out that Jason Bourne is a fictional character. “Jason Bourne is a fictional character, Ted. He doesn’t scare the boogeymen, and neither did you,” one person reacted to Cruz’s post.

Another asked the senator, “You know jason bourne wasn’t real right?” A third one similarly remarked, “You know Jason Bourne is fictional, right? The CIA has to recruit real people. Resign.” Someone else reminded him, “Senator, Jason Bourne is a fictional character. The CIA has real people in it who do real work on behalf of our nation. Celebrate the reality of those who serve.”

“If a secret agent scares the people they are trying to spy on, isn’t that counterproductive, Senator?” one person argued, before adding, “(Jason Bourne is fiction, btw.)” Another added, “Jason Bourne ? We’ve had enough fiction from the Republican Party.”

This isn’t the first time Cruz makes a Jason Bourne reference when criticizing law enforcement agency. Back in 2019, he blasted the FBI’s and the Department of Justice’s handling of the Trump-Russia investigation by comparing it to Matt Damon’s character in the “Bourne” movie series. “What was going on here — this wasn’t Jason Bourne, this was Beavis and Butt-Head,” he said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

See Mark Wahlberg's Shocking Transformation After Gaining 20 Lbs. in 3 Weeks for 'Father Stu' Role

    Instagram

The ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ actor shares a before and after picture to compare his previously ripped physique to his now fuller figure after vowing to indulge in his favorite food.

    May 4, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Mark Wahlberg, who is known for his strict diet, has lost the result of all his gym sessions. The actor has just uncovered his shocking transformation after intentionally gaining weight for his next movie role in “Father Stu”.

Taking to his Instagram page on Monday, May 3, the 49-year-old shared a before and after picture to compare his previously ripped physique to his now fuller figure after gaining 20 lbs. in just three weeks, all in the name of acting. In the left snap, he grinned as he showed off his chiseled abs and chest, while on the right side, he was laying in bed with a rounder belly.

“From left photo 3 weeks ago to this, now,” he captioned the post, which also included a full shot of him flexing his muscles in the old photo. Spilling the secret to his dramatic weight gain, the “Pain and Gain” star credited his private chef Lawrence Duran. “Thanks to @chef_lawrence_d cooking,” he added in the caption.

In “Father Stu”, Wahlberg will be playing a boxer-turned-priest, Father Stuart Long. Back in April, he told Jimmy Kimmel that the role required him to get shredded first for the boxing scenes and then gain weight. “After we do the boxing scenes, I get to put on as much weight as possible over the course of the film, so I’m challenging myself to put on 30 pounds in the next six weeks,” he said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”.

“The Fighter” actor went on to reveal his plans to gain weight, saying that he would be eating “lots of burgers and lots of buns” to pile on the pounds. While movie bosses have recruited a “very smart” nutritional expert to help him make the transformation as healthily as possible, Wahlberg wanted to have a little fun with the mission.

“They want me to do it as healthy as possible and I’m like, ‘Dude, I’ve been on such a regimen for so long, I just want to eat everything in sight,’ ” he shared. “I want to go to bakeries, I want to go to Denny’s (diner), I want to get pancakes, I want to get everything I can possibly get my hands on!”

“(I’ll hopefully start) with a 20-piece chicken nugget and 20-piece hot wings from Kentucky Fried Chicken with a six-pack of beer,” he added, quipping, “Why not start with a bang? I might need a porta-potty too, but you know what, I’m ready to go.”

Wahlberg’s weight gain journey is far from being over as he revealed on May 1 that he was “up about 20” pounds and was planning on “going up another 20.”

    May 4, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Olivia Rodrigo, Keegan-Michael Key, Anya Taylor-Joy and Lil Nas X have been set for two final episodes of “Saturday Night Live” season 46. On Monday, May 3, the long-running NBC show announced that “The Predator” actor and the “Driver License” songstress will appear as the host and the musical guest for an upcoming episode on May 15.

Meanwhile, “The Queen’s Gambit” breakout star will host the finale on May 22. Joining Anya, the Grammy-winning rapper will serve musical performance in the forthcoming episode. “Final eps of Season 46!” the account for “SNL” wrote alongside the show’s signature post-it note pictures revealing the lineup and the schedule.

Olivia expressed her excitement in the comment section of the post. “ive literally never been so excited in my whole life,” the “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” star wrote.

Prior to this, Olivia was featured in a viral sketch of the show. In the February episode, “Bridgerton” star Rege-Jean Page, who hosted the show, played a guy who hung out with some of his friends at a bar where Olivia’s hit single “Drivers License” was played on the jukebox. “I gotta hear that freaking bridge again, man,” one of them said before they sang along to the song.

Olivia, who turned 18 that day, took to her Twitter account to share her excitement. “DRIVERS LICENSE SNL SKETCH IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER IM SHAKING,” so she wrote on Twitter following the episode.

She further addressed the skit in a March interview. “I was absolutely floored. I was screaming. I think being made fun of and parodied on ‘SNL’ is the biggest compliment in the whole world, so that was so surreal,” she said.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think that they were going to do a ‘Driver’s License’ sketch where they played the entirety of ‘Driver’s License’,” she went on saying. “And Pete Davidson, who is my biggest celebrity crush, was singing it and comparing me to Taylor Swift, who is my idol. It was just insane. It was on my 18th birthday too, so it was just a crazy day.”

    Lionsgate

Looking back at his experience shooting the romcom in the Dominican Republic, the former ‘Las Vegas’ star gushes that the ‘On the Floor’ hitmaker was ‘a dream to work with.’

    May 4, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Josh Duhamel has hailed Jennifer Lopez “a dream to work with”. The actor plays “On the Floor” star Jennifer’s on-screen love interest Tom in the upcoming rom-com “Shotgun Wedding” and admitted shooting the flick in the Dominican Republic with Jennifer was the best experience of his career so far.

“It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had shooting, or working in this business,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “First of all, we’re in the Dominican Republic, which is absolutely beautiful. Jen was a dream to work with, she’s an absolute pro and totally engaged and loved the project.”

The pair have been good friends for a long time so it was a breeze, with Josh adding, “We had a great relationship. I’ve known her forever so it was easy for us to get in lock and step.”

      See also…

“The crew, the cast, we have a great cast and Jason Moore, the director, it was one of those situations that everything kind of fit perfectly. I’m very proud of the way it turned out and I can’t wait for it all to come together.”

The plot follows Tom and Darcy (Jennifer) as their “extravagant destination wedding is hijacked by criminals”. Josh took over the lead role from Armie Hammer, who has been accused by multiple women of being controlling and abusive in relationships, while exhibiting odd sex fetishes and cannibalistic fantasies.

Armie announced his exit in mid-January. In a released statement, he said, “…in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic.” He has since also been accused of rape, which is currently under investigation by Los Angeles Police.

'Sex and the City' Reboot Gets Three Women of Color Added to Cast Ensemble

HBO Max CCO Casey Bloys says that executive producers Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King did not want to tell a story that is not reflective of the way New York looks today.

    May 4, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
The “Sex and the City” reboot won’t be as white as the original series, thanks to the addition of three new black female characters.

“And Just Like That…” will be a lot more diverse than “Sex and the City”, which has been criticized for its largely white cast, according to a new report.

Responding to the TV Line story, HBO Max CCO Casey Bloys says, “We are trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York, so it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”

      See also…

“They [executive producers Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King didn’t want to tell a story with all-white writers or an all-white cast as it’s not reflective of New York. So they are being very, very conscious about understanding that New York has to reflect the way New York looks today.”

Parker will be returning as Carrie Bradshaw, alongside Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, and John Corbett will reprise his role as Aidan Shaw, but Kim Cattrall and Chris Noth won’t be back for the new show. Cattrall had repeatedly stated that she has no interest in reprising her iconic Samantha Jones role.

News about the reboot’s diverse cast came around three months after HBO Max unveiled that non-white scribes have been added to the series’ official writing team. Comedian/author Samantha Irby, “Fresh Off the Boat” writer Rachna Fruchbom and “Reversing Roe” producer Keli Goff are joining showrunner Michael Patrick King and veteran writers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky.
