  • Bella Thorne Claims to Have Written First Two Episodes of 'Very Dark' TV Show

    WENN/Avalon

Talking about her big 10-year plan, the star of Netflix’s ‘The Babysitter: Killer Queen’ shares her hope that she could ‘feel accomplished and feel good’ about herself in due time.
    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Bella Thorne has turned her hand to screenwriting, and has already penned the first two episodes of what she has tipped to be a “very dark” TV show.
The 22-year-old actress has enjoyed huge success since first bursting onto the scene in Disney Channel series “Shake It Up”, and can currently be seen in new Netflix movie “The Babysitter: Killer Queen”.
And Bella also has big plans for her future – which include writing as well as acting.
Revealing during an interview with Entertainment Tonight that she’s already penned the first two episodes and plotted “season arcs and what not”, Bella explained that the show is “based in the industry” – but refused to reveal the title as “the title itself really gives the whole thing away”.

Instead, she teased that the programme is “very dark”, and added: “There’s a lot of young characters and parents, and we deal with the relationship between those,” she shares. “And all these characters really connect and intertwine throughout the whole series. Each episode, you kind of get a whole piece of that and it shocks you and then that kinda leads you into the next.”
Her new TV show is one part of her big 10-year plan, which also includes “marriage, happiness, taking a break from thinking so hard, hopefully while running my empire”.
“Hopefully in 10 years I can kind of take a good breather, feel accomplished and feel good about myself,” she smiled.

  • Nia Dacosta Explains Why 'Candyman' Release Gets Delayed to 2021

    WENN/Avalon

The horror film, which was originally set to hit the theaters on October 16, centers on a struggling artist who begins to lose his sanity after discovering the story of Candyman.
    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Filmmaker Nia DaCosta’s forthcoming horror film “Candyman” has been pushed back to 2021.
The movie was set to hit theatres on 16 October, but it is being held back due to the coronavirus pandemic and will now open some time next year, according to Variety.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, it is based on a ghostly legend and centres on a struggling artist, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who begins to lose his sanity after discovering the story of “Candyman”.
As the tale goes, if someone says his name to a mirror five times, “Candyman” will appear and kill whoever summoned him. The much-anticipated film was set to be one of the year’s biggest Halloween releases.
The director explained on Twitter the film was pushed because the production team “wanted the horror and humanity of ‘CANDYMAN’ to be experienced in a collective.”

Director Nia Dacosta talked about release delay of ‘Candyman’.
She continued: “We made ‘CANDYMAN’ to be seen in theaters. Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories – how they shape each other, how they shape us. It’s about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it.”

  • Zendaya-Starring Drama 'Malcolm and Marie' Acquired by Netflix With $30 Million Deal

    Netflix

Netflix makes the deal at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival where the streaming giant makes several splashy deals for ‘Bruised’ and ‘Pieces of a Woman’.
    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – It has been reported that Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Sam Levinson’s “Malcolm & Marie” movie starring Zendaya Coleman and John David Washington. According to Deadline, the streaming giant wrapped up a deal near $30 million to get the rights. The deal was negotiated by Endeavor Content and CAA.
“I am so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my ‘Euphoria’ family, for coming together during such uncertain times. We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love. We are all thrilled that it has ended up with Netflix which is unparalleled in allowing filmmakers the freedom to tell their stories that reach audiences all over the world,” Levinson, who wrote and produced the film, said in a statement.
“Malcolm & Marie” stars John David as a filmmaker. His girlfriend (Zendaya) returns home following a celebratory movie premiere, and expecting to celebrate success. However, revelations about their relationships begin to surface, putting the strength of their love on a test.
The drama was shot during the production lockdown from June 17 to July 2 in Carmel, California, on 35mm in black and white with help from Fotokem, marking the first post-pandemic film to complete production. Kevin Turen and Ashley Levinson serve as producer, while Zendaya, John David, Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Will Greenfield, Aaron L. Gilbert and Scott Mescudi are credited as executive producers.
Netflix makes the deal at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival where Netflix makes several splashy deals. During the largely virtual affair, the streamer paid $20 million for global rights to Halle Berry’s directorial debut “Bruised”. It also bought “Pieces of a Woman”, a drama starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf as couple shattered by the loss of their newborn baby.

  • 'Tenet' Surpasses $200 Million at Global Box Office

    Warner Bros.

While the Christopher Nolan-directed action thriller reaches the milestone worldwide, Disney’s live-action remake of ‘Mulan’ opens with an underwhelming $23.3 million.
    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan’s action thriller “Tenet” has surpassed the $200 million (£156.4 million) milestone at the global box office.
The first major blockbuster to hit the big screen following the coronavirus shutdown is continuing to draw fans back to theatres, adding $6.7 million (£5.2 million) from the North American market in its second weekend on release.
It also brought in $10 million (£7.8 million) from the Chinese box office to take the movie’s worldwide total to $207 million (£161.9 million).
Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action remake of “Mulan”, starring Liu Yifei as the titular heroine, was another new title for theatre-goers in China to check out, although it opened with an underwhelming $23.3 million (£18.2 million) after filmmakers came under fire for shooting parts of the picture in Xinjiang – a highly controversial province where Uighur Muslims have been detained in mass internment camps – and adding a message of thanks to local authorities in the closing credits.
Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy has since responded to the backlash received over the filming location, reports Deadline.
“Let me just put something into context,” she explained. “The real facts are that ‘Mulan’ was primarily shot – almost in entirety – in New Zealand.
“In an effort to accurately depict some of the unique landscape and geography of the country of China for this period drama, we filmed scenery in 20 different locations in China.”
Although “Mulan” is available in some theatres globally, Disney bosses opted to release the film via its Disney+ app for U.S. audiences as a premium add-on, costing $30 (£23).

    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Comedienne Amy Poehler is staging another virtual “Parks and Recreation” reunion ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections to give the Democratic Party a boost in the swing state of Wisconsin.
The star will regroup with Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Retta, and Jim O’ Heir, as well as show creator Mike Schur, on 17 September for the Town Hall fundraising event, which will also feature a special question and answer session.
The gathering has been organised by officials at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and will be open to donors of all levels.
“Anything you donate will be used to ensure that (President Donald) Trump loses Wisconsin, and thereby the White House,” they state.

The hour-long digital bash will get underway at 8pm CT. For more information, visit: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/parks-and-rec-townhall?refcode=200917ParksRec&amount=27.

  • Disney Exec Admits Backlash Over Xinjiang Filming Gets 'Mulan' 'a Lot of Publicity'

    Walt Disney Pictures

The Mouse House has responded as the ‘Mulan’ remake is criticized for being filmed in the province where Uighur Muslims were detained in mass internment camps.
    Sep 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Disney CFO Christine McCarthy has addressed backlash over the studio’s new live-action remake of “Mulan”.
The film, which streams exclusively on the Disney+ on demand service, has proven controversial among fans after it was discovered that portions of it were filmed in the Xinjiang province of China.
The film’s credits also include a thank you to authorities in Xinjiang – a highly controversial location where Uighur Muslims have been detained in mass internment camps.
Missouri’s Republican junior senator, Josh Hawley, sent a letter to Disney condemning the company for “whitewashing the ongoing genocide of Uighurs and other Muslim ethnic minorities during the production of Mulan” – and now McCarthy has responded.
“I’m not a box-office prognosticator, but it (backlash) has generated a lot of publicity,” she stated, reported Deadline. “Let me just put something into context. The real facts are that Mulan was primarily shot – almost in entirety – in New Zealand.”
“In an effort to accurately depict some of the unique landscape and geography of the country of China for this period drama, we filmed scenery in 20 different locations in China.”
“It’s common knowledge that, in order to film in China, you have to be granted permission. That permission comes from the central government,” she stated, adding that it’s common “to acknowledge in a film’s credits the national and local governments that allowed you to film there.”
“So, in our credits, it recognised both China and locations in New Zealand. I would just leave it at that, but it has generated a lot of issues for us.”
“Mulan”, which stars Liu Yifei as the titular heroine, premiered in Hollywood in March but a wider theatrical release has been repeatedly delayed due to the coronavirus crisis. It is available to view on the streamer as a premium add-on costing $30 (£23).

  • Jeremy Tardy Quits 'Dear White People' as He's Denied Pay Bump Received by His White Peer

    Instagram

The Rashid Bakr depicter accuses Lionsgate bosses of racial discrimination due to pay disparity between black and white cast members ahead of fourth and final season.
    Sep 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Jeremy Tardy will be leaving “Dear White People” ahead of its fourth and final season after accusing Lionsgate bosses of racial discrimination.
The 29-year-old actor, who appeared in a recurring capacity as Rashid Bakr on the show, revealed in a social media post he is not returning as he detailed the allegations.
While Tardy accused them of the discrimination, Lionsgate officials, who produce the series, insist it was nothing more than a financial situation.
“After being offered to return for several episodes my team was notified that our counter offer would not be considered and that the initial offer was the ‘best and final,’ ” he shared on Twitter.
“This news was disturbing because one of my white colleagues – being a true ally – revealed that they too had received the same initial offer and had successfully negotiated a counter offer.”
He continued, “My team expressed this issue to Lionsgate and the producers maintained their position that the white actor was able to negotiate while I was not- regardless of my credits and experience.”
“With this information six recurring cast members, along with myself, banded together on Monday, August 30th to pass on Lionsgate’s initial offers.”
Lionsgate officials responded to Tardy in a statement, via Deadline, insisting, “This was a purely financial negotiation regarding deal terms. Lionsgate is committed to equal treatment for all talent regardless of race, gender, age or sexual orientation.”
“We are very proud of Dear White People and its place in the national conversation about racial equality and social justice and we look forward to beginning production on its 4th season.”
